Default Gen 3 adjustable sights

What do you guys think of the the factory adjustable rear sights found on the gen 3 auto's. I see them on line with fixed or adjustable. All things being equal I would lean toward adjustable (non ccw weapon) but would like to hear some opinions from owners. thanks

I have some of each. While the adjustable sights may look sort of funky, I likie them. I am gradually adding adjustable sights to my gen3's that don't have them. I put a Millett on my 4566TSW, and Santy is supposed to bring me a LPA for my 5906. My 1006 has the factory adjustable. The 1076 also has the Millett. The poor neglected 4006 still has the factory fixed sights, but after some adjustment for windage they seem ok.

I like them alot. It has always been a requirement for me when buying a 3rd generation S&W pistol. They are good looking and almost indestructible. However, my latest 5906 purchase had fixed sights, and it shoots right to point of aim!

I don't care for the look of the adjustable sights and avoid them anyway, but not one S&W auto I've owned has ever needed them...all shot to point of aim with the Novaks.

I began building my collection of 3rd generation pistols (and one 2nd) in 2007. For the first couple of years I would not have adjustable sights. Then, I found a 4506-1 that had adjustable factory night sights. I suspected it was a little special (factory letter confirmed it is a "Special Order Los Angeles Police" shipped in mid 1997). So, I broke my rule and bought it. The adjustable sights grew on me and I started keeping an eye out for them. Now I have a 645 and 4006 with adjustable sights to go with the 4506-1. They are definitely cool.

When you guys say "shoots to point of aim", what range are to talking. On a full size pistol I want my sights on at about 25 yards (plus or minus).

The adjustable rear sight looks a little funky to me, especially when contrasted against the black Novak sight which looks great and "pops" better against the stainless models. That said, having the gun shoot exactly where you want it sure is nice.

does anyone know where to get new night sites for the 4506? mine are pretty worn out, I know I could send the slide back to trijicon but I just wonder if there are sites still being made

AHPD1992,
You can get a replacement set of night sights for your 4506 but it might be worth checking in to see if you can get your set "re-lamped." The tritium tubes can be replaced and it would be far cheaper than replacing the entire front and rear sights.

I have a 3914 that has PT (AKA IWI or Innovative Weaponry Incorporated) night sights from about 1993. The sights themselves were Novak low mount carry sights like the originals and they were fitted with a green dot in the front and two yellow dots in the rear. When they grew dim I sent them back to IWI and they relamped them UNDER WARRANTY for free. I only had to pay for shipping back to me. I don't know if Trijicon offers any kind of a warranty for the original Novak night sights but it is probably worth your time to look into getting them re-lamped.

Good luck!

I like the definition the adjustables have on mine:

These were available with a choice of fixed or adjustable. Surely not as sleek as the fixed version.

Thumbs up

I REALLY like the factory fully adjustable sights.

It's a pity more 'service' pistols don't have them, as some people shoot a bit differently than the POI fixed sights are set for.

Only S&W lets you have it both ways.

Default Slide cuts for sights

Is the slide on a 5906 cut differently for adjustable rear sights than for the fixed rear sight? In other words, can either sight be installed on either gun? Thanks.

No. The cuts are quite different. LPA makes an adjustable sight that will fit the fixed sight cut and supposedly work with the existing front sight. Midway sells them for about $60.

Novak's installed an elevation-adjustable sight they make on my 3913 and 3914 NL. Still have to drift the sight to adjust windage.
