Default S&W 10mm Pistols - Love them or Leave them?

Over the years one of my favorite chamberings in a Semi-Auto is the 10mm. I have a couple today, Glock 20, Kimber, LAR Grizzly, but have never even fired a Smith in 10mm.

I was thinking about acquiring another 10mm and I'm trying to decide if a S&W is a better choice than say a Witness or CZ?

What are your thoughts?

Dave

Wish I could get a Smith 10mm but I live in MA. Not on the AG roster so can't bring 'em in. I own a Delta Elite and love it. Also recently built a Fusion 1911 and it's very accurate as well.

Love 'em. They're built like tanks and in 10mm that's a big plus for both the gun and the shooter!

Just speaking from my experience with the 4506, I think a 10mm 3rd gen would be an excellent pistol. They are spoken of very highly here on the forum. You will appreciate the weight of the gun when firing full power 10mm loads, they certainly get your attention.

I have no idea what the reputation of the Witness or the CZ is, although they are certainly good guns in 9mm. The S&W 10mm pistols, however, are impressive. My personal experience is limited, but I have used a 1026 which my son gave me many years ago. Despite the fact that my hands are not particularly large, the 1026 does fit my hand well, and has reasonable recoil with full power ammo. It shoots to POA, and has been completely reliable. From what I've read, the S&W pistols are plenty strong enough. I wouldn't tell you not to investigate the other guns, but if an S&W fits your hand, I don't think you'd be sorry with the choice.

The 10 is a great cartridge if you reload. Mainstream ammunition companies have watered down the factory loads to the point where it is hardly more than +P .40 S&W. While I am not a Glock hater, I do fault the Glock partially supported chamber in the 10 for the reduced power loads. I would also recommend that you never buy once-fired brass for loading. Most once-fired has gone through a Glock and therefore is ballooned near the rim and not good for anything but pussycat loads. A couple of guys who should know told me the S&W 10XX series is the best 10mm pistol to date. I have a pair of 1066s (both SKUs!) and they are big, heavy and a joy to shoot. I also have a 5 inch 610 that has yet to yield the accuracy I think it should. (No, I am not very good, but even bad shots have standards!) I will find a load to make it shoot, but the autos seem to deliver with anything I put in the magazine. Great caliber--get on board!!

I have a 1006 and a 1076 that I have never been fired. However, I do have a 610-2 that I enjoy shooting.

Don't do it! S&W 10xx series 10mm guns, I wouldn't know any thing about them...But this is what they look like...
The reason I said don't do it is NOBODY CAN HAVE JUST ONE! Oh yes, I do shoot mine. The S&W 1006 is my work horse!

I live in MA and you can own S&W 10 MM's!

I own a 1006 and a 1066, bought them in the last few months since I got the S&W auto bug. I like them both quite a bit. They shoot very well, recoil is not bad, and they just feel real good. I think they are very high quality...

It is true, You can't only have one, mine started with a 1076 (my first S&W auto and 10mm) then a 1006 and now I'm on the hunt for a 610.

Default 10 mm's

I wouldn't trade my 1006, but you forgot one new option in 10mm, the Dan Wesson Titan Elite might be a consideration, if you've got $3829.00 to throw down. There is a write up in the Feb/Mar Guns and Ammo Handguns. It shoots 15 rounds, and a higher cap mag is available. After reading between the lines, I'll keep my 1006, even without the cost consideration (not easy to overlook the fact that I could buy almost 6 1006's for one of these , based on what I paid for mine). Flapjack.

Impressive collection. What makes the 1006 your "workhorse" ? Does it feel different, shoot better, or is it just the one nearest to you?

Have my old former duty 1076, and like it OK, but not nearly as much as my Colt Delta Elite.
But, I'm a M1911 nut anyway.........

The 1006 was my first 10mm since March of 1990, it has the adjustible target sights, and I have the most spare parts put away for it. The 5" barrel lends itself well for load development also. I have been loading since day one for this cartridge, before most manuals had any data.

I have Bar-Sto 40S&W & 9x25Dillon Match Grade conversion barrels for this platform, Bar-Sto is not producing any barrels for them anymore. Although I am waiting for the 357Sig barrel & others to be added, if BM1 gets machine time to finish them. These conversions add to the flexibility and profectency by being able to shoot with the same grip and trigger feel.

I also have the Glock 29 as part of my daily carry now...but I continue to shop for the next for the collection! Oh the addiction is real!

Have owned my 1076 since new and love to shoot it with real 10mm loads...with that said, I don't reload and the good ammo is tough to find and $$...but the 1076 is not going anywhere. Of course once I bought the 1076, I "had" to have a couple of 610's...

Well since Mike Willard of Swamp Fox Ammo passed away there was a void for his premium stuff. However Underwood ammo, Buffalo Bore, Double Tap Ammo and Dallas Reloads offer some full flavored stuff to shoot if you don't roll your own!

I have a 1006 which was grenaded by poorly loaded ammo. Extractor took some skin and I could feel the grip balloon as the mag flew out. Sent it to S&W, they went through it with a fine tooth comb (at no charge, thank you Smith). Been shooting 180 gr Gold Dots for years now, nice shooting auto. Always have an eye out for a nice 1066/1076. The 10mm is an easy reload if you're into that. Note: thats the last time I fired ammo loaded by that person.

Dirty Gary, it sounds like you had a casehead blowout (allowing the high pressure jet of gasses to escape thru blown out casehead), while it was hard on the pistol, I hope you weren't hurt. S&W making the repairs says a lot for their customer product care...

A few years ago I was not interested in 10mm pistols. But, I came across a 1006 and 1076 in 99% condition at a local shooting range/gun store. They were on consignment by the same guy. To my surprise, each was priced a little under $500. I thought those were great deals so I bought both. I fell in love with them, so I began keeping my eye open for 1066 to complete a trifecta.

Well, about 6 to 9 months later, while attending a gun show, I found a 1066 in 99% condition. I knew it would match my others perfectly, but the dealer had it tagged at $700 and I didn't want to spend that much. So, I examined the pistol closely, looked at the price tag and started to walk away. Well, the dealer would simply not let me walk away, so I ended up buying it for $525 out the door. Thus, the three 10mm pistols below cost me an average of $500 each. In Southern California, that's cheap.

Ditto, my 1076 is a gem. Compact, powerful and accurate. The Smith does well with lead bullets. The only shortcoming is my getting tangled up in the de-cocking lever while shooting-a shooter error. Also have a Glock 20 and 29. The answer there is to back off slightly on the loads- still better than the mainline factory stuff. Also, check out the 10mm forums.

I carried a 1006 as a duty weapon in the mid 80's and loved it. Never an issue qualifying. I've been out of law enforcement since the late 80's, and still have this weapon and love shooting it. Just seems to be expensive to shoot. Any thoughts on less expensive ammo?

I have a 1076. Got it second-hand and sent it to S&W to have the tritium sights renewed. I really like it. Reliable, accurate, shoots to point of aim, full house ammo does not faze it. Its only shortcomings are: it is not easy to find a good holster for it; and you need a real deal serious business gun belt if you expect to carry it.

Georgia Arms prices are not too bad if you buy 500 or more.

I have a Glock 20 and will until it gets traded in on a M&P10 (hint, hint).
I have had a Witness 10. They have a reputation for developing cracks in the slide and the double action trigger is horrid. Accuracy was good if you stayed with single action.
If by CZ you mean one of the Dan Wesson 1911 types they are good. CZ does not do a 10 in anything else. Too bad, a 97 frame would allow a lot of 10mm to fit in the mag.

Now to the creme de la creme, the 10XX family, (there was a brief flirtation with some vaporware called a Bren or something like that way back in the 80s that was supposed to be all that but never came to pass) particularly the 1006. The gun that was made for the 10mm and made the 10mm. That is until the female and sissy men agents of the FBI complained and the mighty 10 was watered down to the 40 Short and Weak level causing the case to be shortened so it could fit in a smaller frame giving us the most desired round in LE today, little do they know, but I digress. No connoisseur of things Smith & Wesson can call themselves complete until they possess a 10 series.

They are a treat to shoot with this modern ammo BUT find some equal to the original Norma loads and have some real fun.

To summarize you must have a 10 series.

The reason I said don't do it is NOBODY CAN HAVE JUST ONE! Oh yes, I do shoot mine. The S&W 1006 is my work horse!
I just checked my safe and mine has multiplied too! Meager in comparison, but a start

I recently purchased a complete 1006 slide assembly and use it on my 4506-1 frame and absolutely love the set up. Two guns in one.

Actually, I believe that the Dornhaus & Dixon Bren Ten was the father of all 10mm's. Started production in '83 and ended in '86 with bankruptcy. Tried to be ressurrected by Peregrine but that failed. Shortly thereafter, Colt came out with the Delta Elite and Springfield with the Omega. S&W introduced the 1006 in 1990 I believe and then it got watered down for the FBI to 40 S&W. I have both a DE and an Omega. Would love to get a 10XX series. Would also love to get a Bren Ten (less than 1500 made), but they are a C&R and pricey and also had some slide QC issues so need to be checked (e.g., x-ray and magnaflux) before shooting. Vltor is said to be working on a new Bren Ten but production has been delayed almost 4 years now and folks are dubious as to whether it will happen. But Colt brought back the DE and Glock is churning out 20s and 29s. Long live the 10mm!

Did you have to modify the mags to fit into the frame? Or is that only going the other way (45 to 10mm)?

I would think that the 10mm mags would have to be modified. They have that goofy dimple that protrudes on both sides of the mags.

I have some modified 10mm mags but I have also found that the newer 45 mags ( indents on top ) hold the 10 mm round just fine also.

I own a 1006 and I highly recommend the 10xx series. I just ordered some hogue rubber grips for mine that should be here tomorrow. I think the 1006 is the best shooting 10mm out.

The 10mm was download during evaluations at Quantico. It was not because field agents could not handle the cartridge. Since it was downloaded, Smith found a way to put the weaker cartridge in a 9mm framed gun. The S & W .40 was born

That's good to know that the newer designed 4516 mags will hold 10mm. I have a 1066 and have thought about taking the upper and putting it onto my 4516 lower.......

I paid a premium price on a 1006. I had to have it! I won it on a Gunbroker auction. It was so nice I really wanted to keep it as a safe queen but my wife insisted I use it or lose it. I recommend it if you can afford to shoot it. I reload so it is affordable for me to shoot. When the time comes I will get a 1066 or another 1006. I wish I would have got one sooner.

I have a 1006 I picked up at an estate sale a couple of years ago along with around 1500 rounds of ammo for it. Once I got the sights dialed it, it's about the most accurate pistol I own, right up there with my 70 series Gold Cup and Springfield 1911 A1 in .38 super. IIRC, I gave around $550 for it and the ammo averaged 20 cents a round. I've put 500 rounds through it so far and not one hiccup. Great gun and if I ever find another one for a decent price, I'll grab it! Here are a couple of pics of it:

I have a 1006. 1066, and a 1076.

Don't even mention Glock or EAA in the same sentence as a Smith and Wesson 10xx series. No comparison

And I have a G29 and 3 Delta Elites. Looking for a 1026

Finally found and picked up a nice 1006 and 1066 to compliment my 4566. Never have had 3rd gen S&Ws. They are super nice.

Some times you luck out and find a good one.
Read the whole thread if you get a chance.

I used to have a 1006 but sold it because it was too heavy to carry 18 hours a day, I regretted selling it a few months later. I recently found a 1066 and so far I like it better then the 1006.

In my opinion of the gun you mentioned a S&W 10XX is better then a Glock, Kimber or EA Witness. I have never fired a CZ so I can not comment on that.

Hey everyone. I am new to this forum. I have had a Model 411 for 12 years and today at my lgs I finally found what I was looking for. I picked up a 1006 in 90% condition with 4 magazines for $450. I couldnt believe it. These guns have been hard to come by recently in my area. I was about to by a Glock 20 until I saw this one staring at me in the case. I cant wait to fire it. This is my first 10MM but probably not going to be my last. I have always liked the 3rd gen S&W's. I think I am going to have to start reloading in order to be able to afford to shoot it as much as I want to.

JDG1006,
WOW! What a deal! IIRC I think I paid aroung $500 for mine brand new way back in 1991. You will not regret it. I absolutely love mine. I have had the chance to fire the Glock 20 and to say the least I was not inpressed (I felt like I was holding a plastic squirt gun). IMHO you definately lucked out with the S&W. I lost track of the number of rounds that mine has eaten. I know it is well over 10k (I'm sure I am due for some replacement springs) but I haven't had any hiccups of any kind and she has eaten anything and everthing that I have been able to lay my hands on to feed her. I did add a set of Houge grips to help fill out my hands (gave me a better "feel" after having a Beretta 92 stuck in my hands by the USAF for four years). Unfortunately for me ammo prices and availability have cut short my usual 150-200 rnd weekend trips to the range but other than that you've got a real sweet gun there. ENJOY!

I too am a big fan of the 10 mm, and honestly I haven't found a format that I don't like. I currently own a Smith 1076, a 5" custom 1911, Glock 29, and 20SF, and a 5" 610 revolver. I like them all (the Glock 29 probably the least). The SF configuration on the newer Glocks is definitely an improvement I think. I also had a Dan Wesson bobtail commander that I sold because I just couldn't get it to be as reliable with feeding as I needed it to be. My 1076 has been extremely reliable and it is plenty accurate. 1076 is big and heavy so its not the best concealed/carry option, but it is a pleasure to shoot. If I could ever find one at a semi-decent price I'd love to have a 3" 610 revolver.
