model 41
I have a model 41 with a 4 digit serial number - 43XX
can anybody tell me about when it might have been manufactured?
edit: just called S&W and they said first introduction of the model 41 was 1957 and the first serial number was 1401. so i can only guess that my gun was manufactured in 1957...

The Smith & Wesson service rep gave you incorrect outdated information. According to Roy Jinks, S&W company historian, production of the model 41 started on 9/3/57. The first pistol, sn 3193, was shipped on 9/17/57. Since S&W did not ship in serial number order, there are known examples with slightly lower numbers but I’ve never seen any with serial numbers under 3100. There are rumors that model 41’s numbered in the 30xx range exist and I’d love to verify that. Your pistol was shipped in 1958 with a 7 3/8” barrel with the comp because that was the only configuration available in 1958.
If it’s worth the money, you can request a letter from the Smith and Wesson Historical Association that will give the invoice date and to whom your pistol was sold.

The lowest SN I've observed is 3082. My understanding is that they started at 3000.

Very likely from 1979. Sorry for the late response.

See post #53 above. Likely an early one.

Possibly 1987.
Best to start a new thread with requests like this, new posts in 11 year old threads get missed...

If the first 41 shipped was serial number # 3193 , I wonder when mine (# 3065 ) was shipped

The only way to determine a ship date is a letter of authenticity from the S & W Historical Foundation. Any other information is a guess.
Letter Process - Smith & Wesson Historical Foundation
