S&W Model 910 police turn in...
Picked this up for $250+ transfer.

Anyone know this serial number date of manufacture?
Serial number: VYA4991

Took it all apart and it seems as though not a lot of shooting has been done with this pistol, most all of the wear is holster related, barrel is very bright and clean. This model does have the plastic guide rod and plastic mag release. I am assuming that if I felt the need to, I could upgrade those parts pretty easily, is this correct?

Anyone with more knowledge of this model I would love to hear some of the history behind it and stories of those of you who have shot this weapon.

It was an economy version of the 5900 series. The sights should be plastic also. If it were mine, I would replace the plastic parts.

I would put the manufacture date around 1995 for that serial number. It looks to be in good condition. It should prove to be a good gun as it is a 3rd gen lite. Enjoy your new pistol.

I have two of these "value line" series later renamed to the American Pride series.

Mine are the 908 which is the equivolant of the 3913/3914 and the 457 which is equivolant to the 4516.

Although I have other more conventional 2nd and 3rd generation S&W pistols, these are among my favorites based on single-sides safety decocker/safety, weight and trigger.

Can't go wrong with these cost-effective guns in your cadre of weapons.

As far as replacement parts like, the guide rod, and the mag release,
would the parts off of a S&W model 915 work if I wanted to use those parts?

The sights probably will be ok.
How about holsters that will work with this weapon...suggestions?

Did a search and have been reading up on the 910, from the forum here.

Has anyone replaced the Magazine release with a metal replacement?
Saw a lot of post concerning this but not any specifically about what parts from what model the used to replace the standard plastic part that comes on the 910. I would think that the 915 mag release button would work, but maybe that's not the case? Please advise.

I will most likely replace the guide rod with the metal one, and order some fresh recoil springs. Looking forward to shooting it next weekend after the wait period is up.

I have the same model purchased new over a decade ago. This was my first venture into S&W semi autos and have not one regret. It is as accurate as any 3rd gen and by far my favorite. Check out out this post from another member 910 vs. 915. A lot of good info there. Enjoy!

Why replace the sights simply because they are plastic?

If they line up, and the bullet hits the target, I can guarantee that the target won't hold it against you that the gun had plastic sights.

Glocks come with plastic sights - which are fine unless you really want some feature that the plastic version doesn't offer. They sure as heck work just fine.

The 910 is an economical, and practical gun. The appeal of it is just for those reasons. "Upgrades" on a 910 don't make any sense to me.

I agree wholeheartedly. I have a 908, a 910, and two 457's. The 908 is a superb concealed carry gun if you want a single stack 9mm. The 910 has the 15 round capacity magazine going for it but isn't quite as concealable as the 908. It isn't hard to conceal by any means, it just isn't as small as the 908. The 457 is my standard carry gun 9 months of the year. It's only slightly (VERY slightly) larger than the 908, and I'll trade off one less round in the magazine for the extra oomph of the 45 ACP round versus the 9mm.

The 910 (and pretty much all full-size S&W double-stack 9mm's) take the Fobus SG-21 holster quite well.

I pick it up for keeps on Thursday.
I will order some recoil springs and a metal guiderod.
The sights seem fine and entirely functional to me, I have no plans to change them out. Other parts, like the plastic guiderod and plastic mag release have me just a bit concerned on their longevity.

How do the plastic parts like the mag release seem to be holding up? Anyone changed their plastic mag release out for a metal one?

I checked this gun out pretty well when my FFL received it for me, and the internals where very clean, barrel was showing now signs of wear or residue. The trigger on this weapon seems especially nice, double action was very smooth and the single action was crisp!

I will make it to the range on the weekend and give a range report of what my impressions/issues(if any) were of this new member to my family.

Any 5900 series round trigger guard holster will work for your gun. Mine rides in a Kramer #3 or a Milt Sparks VM-2.

Picked up my 910 today.
Broke her down and cleaned her up good, Lubed and
reassembled. Added the Hogue grips and it fees like a different
weapon! The grips are great. This 910 is in great shape. Looking forward to range time on Saturday!

Made it to the local range today.
Shot 100+ rounds of WWB through her today without
a single hiccup! No failures of any kind. Accuracy was impressive
within 4-5 mags of shooting I felt comfortable enough to sent the target out to 45 feet, and shot a 4 inch group of 5!
Very comfortable shooting 9mm! Very happy with this piece
of history. The Hogue grips make this a very nice gun to shoot!
I added some white to the lettering on the slide.

Very nice pistol, even though most of mine are the higher end 3rd gen guns, I always thought S&W had a good thing going with these. I've always wanted a 3906/4 but they left that ugly 2nd gen hook on the triggerguard, so that sent me searching for the elusive(not as popular)909. It took a couple of years, an finally found one for under three bill's. No being a lefthanded shooter, I had to get that fixed i.e. an ambi-safety. So a call to S&W to let them know what I needed, an they asked if I was LEO or Military, of which I'm both(Retired/disabled). So they sent off a mailin slip at their cost, charged me half on parts an labor, an shipped it back on their dime. Very cool, an she is such a sweet pistol!!!!

Thought about picking up a 909 myself there is a pristine one online for $399 with box etc.I don't have any experience with the 915 but plenty with the 910 and it is a very nice piece.The plastic parts are NOTHING to worry about.Guiderod-switch it out for model 59 off Numrich,sights-Meprolight makes replacements,mag release-when the spring wears out you can order one for a 59xx carefully dremel a small notch on frame for the takedown button,the disconnector-leave it alone.Fastbolt has told me that the plastic one performs as good if not better than the steel ones.If it makes you feel any better my...4566 has a plastic disconnector! Funny how the plastic parts can scare us with the 3rd gen jewels but we won't hesitate to rely on a M&P,Glock,HK,SIG and any other 'plastic' pieces to get the job done I turned a buddy of mine on to these 3rd gens after having shot my model 410 and he bought one used at the range right then and there.Over 2300 rounds later downrange with plastic sights,guiderod,mag button,and disconnector he had one complaint-the recoil spring he had not changed when he bought the gun was worn out....What! But it's not plastic! His 410 has been flawless to this day and is his favorite gun,he paid $250 OTD for it
