Default 5906 from CDNN, still a good deal?

Are the recent pistols being shipped still in good/very good condition?

So far, most buyers seem to be happy with what they have received, I’m seriously considering ordering one while they’re still available. However, I’m thinking that CDNN must have shipped a ton of these over the past couple of years and they should be getting down to the bottom of the barrel. $299 plus shipping is still one heck of a deal to pay if the condition warrants it.

Hi Garpo,

The recent 5906s I've handled ranged from "good" condition-grips showing a fair amount of small dings, frame and slide some holster scuffs and a few minor surface scratches-to "excellent" condition-grips showing very little if any wear and the frame and slide showing very minor holster wear.

All regardless of cosmetic condition seemed to be in excellent mechanical condition with clean bores.

Even if some have had a few thousand rounds through them, I'd expect the barrel to last for 40k rounds+ and the frame and slide at least double or triple that with tentative ease.

Bottom line: An American made semi auto with a forged barrel, frame and slide, chambered in a round that the gun is over built to handle for $299 is a steal.

Get one. Heck, pick up two if funds allow!

Best,

Heekma

Mine came in excellent shape. The rubbr Hogue's were a bit chewed up, but I was gonna toss them anyway. I replaced the with factory straight Delrin grips, which are perfect for me. I'd rate mine at 90% or better. I just wish it had the stainless hammer and trigger. Mine has the black.

KBM,

FWIW, every single 3rd Gen. I've shot with the MIM hammer and trigger were noticeably smoother-and because of that I'm sure-at least seemed lighter than versions with the stainless trigger and hammer.

Best,

Heekma

There's always the PC 3rd gen action tune, which I believe includes spring replacement. So worst case scenario is a tuned 5906 for $399. it's hard to overstate what a bargain that is.

I picked up this 5906 that I ordered from CDNN for my father last night from my FFL. It was rated as "Very Good" condition on the box.

The Good: Internals look great, I don't think this gun was shot a lot at all. The Hogue grips appear to be brand new. It came with a factory Hi-cap magazine.

The Bad: There is pitting under the grips, not a lot, but its there. The previous owner attempted to polish the trigger and the hammer, and both of those look horrible. There was even rust on the trigger itself.

Overall, I think this is a great pistol for the money. I can't see rating a pistol with pitting on it as "Very Good", but I can live with that.

Here are the picks of what it looked like last night.

Here is one that I got when they first advertised the 299 price. Someone had polished it a little and I finished it. An excellent value in my opinion.

In the context of "Very good" (for a cop trade) I think you all did well.

I haven't downloaded the CDNN catalog in awhile. Is the $299 deal still going on?

Yes. $299 for the 5906 and $329 for the 6906.

I got my 5906 from Widener's for $275. Didnt feel like paying $300 + tax + shipping through CDNN since I'm in Texas. I got mine in last week and it's missing the right side safety lever. I feeling it's gonna suck big time trying to find a replacement. Plus the tiny tiny spring and plunger that holds the knob on.

I have 5906 from CDNN. It is in excellent condition. I shoot a little +P+
and Win. NATO which is why I like this gun.

Get one! CDNN also has the 6906, which I'm considering but am apprehensive about the "good" condition. Anyone have one?

Got a 6906 from CDNN a couple of months ago and couldn't believe the great condition. Not a scratch and no appreciable wear. Actually, there was no evidence it had ever been cleaned, either, but I can live with that. <G>

I've ordered a few police trade-in guns over the years from CDNN and been happy. Yesterday I picked up two of their "select" 5906 guns at $339 and was disappointed with the condition. One had a lot of deep pitting under the grips, especially near the bottom of the mainspring. They came with new Hogue grips. I don't know if CDNN employees installed the grips but the pitting would have been obvious. The slides and frames had a number of obvious marks so I sure wouldn't call these "select" by any stretch of the imagination. I guess they're near the bottom of the barrel with the 3rd generation police trade-ins. I would never recommend these to anybody so buyer beware. For not much more, you can pick up a brand new Stoeger Cougar as a truck gun.

I think that by "Select" CDNN means that they look at a few guns and give you what looks like the best. I don't think they look under grips for rust. For what it is worth I have two stainless guns that have had some corrosion under the grips. One from my own neglect and one bought used that had been a police surplus gun. Clean up the area by going over it with some polish like Flitz and put the same or a new grip on it. Clean up the rest of the gun and shoot it. If the gun is reasonably accurate and reliable, which it is likely to be, you still got a good deal.

If the CDNN 5906 picked-up just last week is any indication, I believe an unqualified "yes" is the answer to the OP's question. Mine is one of the select examples that currently go for $340. A full set of photos is shown in another thread I recently posted. Click the link below.

New (to me) 5906

After reading some concerns about rust under the grips in ths thread, I pulled the Hogues from mine and shot some quick photos. Pardon the poor quality, they were shot handheld under direct flash. I did nothing to the grip area before taking the pics. The pistol was "as delivered."

That little bit of reddish-brown around the lift side of the hammer strut pin isn't rust. One quick rub of a silicone cloth removed it all. The black specs are probably some old corrosion that was removed in the past. None of it went below the surrounding surface steel.

As an aside, one of the tricks my brother and I used when we carried these 3rd Gen pistols year round was to smear a thin bead of gun lube around the edges of the grip panels before re-installing. I preferred Teflon based grease while my brother used everything from Break Free to G.I. gun grease. All seemed to work about as well as the next in preventing under-grip rust, even during hot summers when the guns were worn IWB.

My 5906 has the chromed steel hammer and trigger, (looks like stainless) and it has far and away the most smooth and light DA trigger pull than ANY other semiauto, or revolver, I've ever fired, or dry fired.

And I bought my 5906 new, so I know that absolutely nothing has been done to that pistol; it'sexactly as it left the factory.

I love that 5906

I got an email from them last week that said they have the CA State Parks 4006s now for $349, that's mighty tempting.

IMO, just about any 3rd Gen. S&W under $375 is bordering on a steal. In my region, nice but no where mint examples usually have price tags in the $425-450 range. That's for standard models. Make it a TSW or other limited run example and you add another $50-75.

I think the market is starting to realize what it lost due to the "polymer revolution." Prices are going up accordingly.
