in 1979 I purchased from an elderly gentleman a gun that he won in a raffle at a Gun Club I paid $900.00 for a pickled nickel finished Class D (full) Factory engraved by J.Adams as marked on frame under grips Colt Python, this gun has never been fired, cylinder never turned, trigger never pulled, absolutely no drags marks in 100% condition. I have owned this gun for 35 years and never intend to sell it, don't even ask

Best deal ever for me was a 19-2, pinned and recessed, 4" barrel, original diamond stocks, for $249. Bought 2 years ago. Dopey kid working the counter so his dad could take the day off (I'll bet he regretted that!) literally had just put it on the shelf. This gun was PERFECT. Not a mark. Hardly a turn line. Mirror bright bluing. Kid said "nobody wants these old revolvers". Probably bought new in 1967 and sat in a sock drawer. Kid told me elderly woman came in with it that morning. I bet the husband died and she didn't know what to do with it.

Sadly, I sold it for triple my money. I took it to the range once and fired 18 rounds through it. I was handling it like it was a newborn baby. I hated to see the carbon rings around the cylinder that I knew I would never get off. I was so afraid of messing it up I knew I would never shoot it again. I do miss it now that it is gone, though.

Last year, I see a very nice 67-1 4" on gunbroker. Starting bid of $199. Buy it now at $225. I jumped on it. Auction was barely 15 minutes old. It shoots like a laser, but since this is my wife's "get a gun if there's an emergency", I put crimson trace laser grips on it. Her shooting wasn't very good, and the laser has sure helped her. She's not gonna put the time in to get really proficient with it.

If I had a Pyhton, I would jump on the "Walking Dead" bandwagon and sell it for 3 grand, without even thinking twice. I know they are highly regarded, but they just don't do it for me at all.

I traded a Leupold VXII for a S&W 915 w/7 mags and a S&W 65-3 3" .357 mag for $360 OTD. All in one week lol

Went to an auction. Auctioneer said it was a 5 screw S&W 38 special pre-14. I bought it for $325. Imagine my disappointment when I got it home and found out I had to buy the more expensive 32 ammo to shoot it. Only an 80-85% gun but it is the tapered barrel and narrow rib. Beautiful matte blue.

Probably this one, as it represented a unique opportunity

No I don't have a VP 70 although you can find it here. Never liked it much, and the stock needs to be attached for bursts, which I find quite restrictive.

Understood - only way I could justify what I believe to be absolutely the world's worst trigger! I love the looks of the VP70, love the fact that HK made it work decades before Glock, love the 18rd magazines, but oh, the trigger ... dear god the trigger.

I was going to say that was my best deal - wanted a VP70z quick before Colorado's magazine capacity ban, and found a guy dumping a P9S and a VP70z together for less than what most VP70z were going for alone. I guess the GunBroker buyers didn't look because it was two guns - but I got the pair for less than either alone IIRC (maybe it was +$100 over the single unit price but it was a steal IMO) I was going to flip the P9S and get a "free" VP70z until I shot the dang thing - now it's apparently found a permanent home Oh well, someone had to.


Lesson there ... sell individually, not in groups/lots!

ETA: Re your 93R thread - I think the other poster is off by a factor of 10. Given the single-unit quantities of 93R here, I can't imagine they're under US$30,000 - and I wouldn't be surprised at $40-50k. They might have been US$5,000 when the first guy sold them pre-1986 but by now....

I agree the HK VP 70 has a historical significance being the first functional polymer pistol by a large margin. And the full auto rate of fire : 2'200 shots/min . Still not very pretty though in my opinion, but then neither were the first Glocks (we just got used to them as they are gazillions now).

Yep, the P9S has grown on me - such that I occasionally suffer from the idea of seeking out the .45 cal version

To me the VP70z looks like a science-fiction ray gun - so while definitely not "pretty" it has always had an odd appeal to me. (I know you're a wood grip guy, so I can see the VP would be the antithesis of that!) Not a gun I plan to give up - though I shoot it VERY rarely

ETA: I should have mentioned the unique optical illusion front sight also ... another innovative (if not popular) feature of the VP70.

Well I have a G 17 as well. And so far I've kept my two HK P7s (M8 & M13) originals, plastic grips and all.

Have you seen the Nill grips for the P7 series? Absolutely gorgeous - I should snag a set, but my P7s are working guns so seems silly to put fatter prettier grips on them.

I bought a 6906 off GB 3 or 4 years ago. My brother has a 5906 and I always loved that gun and wanted one of my own. I found a low round count, non police gun, in box with all the paperwork, etc.

I was so excited I went to my buddy's house(20 year Army & worked in armory) and showed him. In 2 seconds he looks at it and says, "umm did you look down the barrel?". When S&W machined the rifling, they cut it offset!

Normally S&W only warranties original owner guns. But they took care of everything(all expenses paid) and installed a new barrel and test fired it.

So now I have a brand new un fired pristine 6906. It has increased in value over the last few years.

4546 $185 at auction, a beauty and I knew the cop that owned it!

My best purchase was probably my Lee Enfield. $45 dollars in great condition, interesting marks, and matching numbers. I generally buy handguns new.

624 purchased new in 1987 for $225.

I husseled guns rather hard when the girls were in college. Guy called wanting to sell me a lightly used Model 12 in a ragged box. LGS offered him $150. He thought it should bring $250. Paid him and sold it about two hours later for $950. Bought a just about perfect pre 10 square butt snub nose recently at a pawn shop for $140, no box or papers. It is a keeper. I didn't even fuss about the tax. Bought a Model 70 Super Grade .270 from a dealer who was afraid to clean the bore ( looked bad dirty) for $325 many years ago. It cleaned up fine and I made a really handsome profit on it.

These days, since the daughters all have graduated college without debt, I tend to keep everything I buy. I don't look that hard or often
anymore.

Maybe not my best deal but still pretty good- Model 13-2 ('upgraded' to -3 at the factory) I recently picked up for $325. They threw in a Bill Jordan-style holster. Gun used to belong to the Sacramento Sheriff's Office.

Not me, but about 10 years ago my brother found a like new in box Model 70 , pre '64 in 375 H&H for $100 along with five boxes of shells at a garage sale.

My best buy was actually a trade. I traded a base Anderson AR-15 that I had a total of $700.00 in for a NIB S&W 1911 Performance Center .45acp plus the dude threw in another $200.00 cash so I would leave the cheap red/green dot scope on it. Not like he does not know guns since he owns 46 1911's, mostly Colts. This was his first AR-15 and he was like a kid in a candy store.

Maybe my used 6" python for $150, or a NIB Python Target 38 for $500, both in the mid-90's. What is that in Today's dollars? It's not NIB anymore, it's my Bullseye gun.

I had a older neighbor of mine ask me if I liked guns. Well yeah I guess I have a few. She needed money and had a few for sale. We went over to her house and proceeded to produce 6 or 7 old shotguns and rifles that really didn't interest me much. Said she had 2 more. Came back out with this 1972 S&W model 66 and a Winchester model 61 22.

The 61 was kind of beat up and didn't have much bluing left, it did have an octagon barrel, I really liked it. She changed her mine on it, it was her rifle as a little girl.

The 66 was bought for $250, I could have gotten it cheaper. Before I left she said it came with a holster and a letter from a lawyer. ???? What history about the 66 was I about to find out. Well the letter turned out to show that the 66 belonged to a Memphis policeman that had been killed investigating a home invasion in 1982. Whether he was wearing it isn't known but it now has a special place in my safe.

I don't know. Why is it I can only remember the one that got away and not my best deal.

I was just getting into the Model 41 and actually had one..maybe I had my second by then. Anyway, I wasn't really looking for any more and attended my first live auction - not really expecting any deals.

Anyway, I saw a Model 41 in good shape, not great, but clean and I'd be happy with one in that condition and I'm picky. 22 Short, eh, I want one that shoots standard 22lr. Well, we'll see what it goes for. It runs up to $700 and sold. Ok, so it went for about I would pay for a 41 at the time, so no harm. Oh...wait, the 22 short versions were selling for north of $2,000. I HAD my iPhone, why didn't I Google the damn thing! Ugh....

Probably my best value was my Makarovs. I bought one online and had it shipped to the dealer. When I went to pick it up, he had two more in the case. $210 each. I seriously think that's a heck of a deal for these pistols. I know folks got them cheaper before then, but I was pretty happy at the time.

Bought a really nice, older Remington 870 for $150 from a home dealer.

In the early 90's - a green-label R6520 for $750 at a Bill Goodman Show. I was there early on a Friday, it was the only one there among many Sporters and I snatched it.

A couple weeks later, DC announced the details of the crime bill that was about to be voted on. I put about two or three mags through it, carefully cleaned it, shoved it into a bore-store sock and it has been hiding all "mint like" on the back row on my safe.

Everyone, but for a financial best, a Mossberg 930 new in the box for $380.00 at an online auction site, I think ranks up there as a best buy.

A no brainer for me. Bought a service-grade Garand about 10 years ago for $425, if I remember correctly.

I've had more fun with that rifle than any other firearm I've ever owned. And I'll never sell or trade it. I'm hoping my son in California will be able to have I when the time comes.

Check out the CMP - they still have Garands but they won't last forever!

Hands down - 4536 for $300 at Gander mountain less than a year ago.

If inheritance counts, my dad left me an unfired 39-2 NIB and a 1969 vintage PPK 22, Walther German made before import restrictions also unfired NIB. Both are no longer unfired

Traded in a 2" model 10 and paid $30 boot foe a new Belgium Browning High Power with adjustable sight. Had $80 in the model 10 (Police discount at the time)
