Question 1076 Reassembly?

Earlier this week, I purchased a 1076 (civilian) this is my first exploration into the third generation Smith autos. I am VERY excited. HOWEVER, I can not get the gun reassembled. The slide stop pin, link pin (or whatever you want to call it) will not protrude through the right-hand side of the gun no matter WHAT I do. What am I doing wrong? I feel like an idiot because I basically dealt with every style of automatic pistol and I can not reassemble this pistol. And its making me VERY angry. Thank you very much for helping me with my idiotic problem.

Don't have a 1076-wish I did. Check out this link-it might help:SW1076. You might also try a search on You Tube for "field stripping a 1076" or something similar.

OK lets have a look thru the hole where the slide stop goes thru...if you see the recoil rod or the pin that maybe what is stopping the slide stop from going thru. Remove the slide examine the recoil rod to be sure the spring loaded pin is inside and not sticking out too far.

Be sure the barrel is in the slide with nothing to keep it from being it nesteled into the slide fully.

Then when you replace the recoil rod, be sure it catches on the barrel lug in the notch to hold the assembly. Now slide it back on to the frame slowly, pushing the levers down as the slide rides over them. then retract the slide enough for the notch to line up above the hole where the slide stop goes, you should see all the way thru to the other side...then slide the slide stop into the hole all the way, taking care not to mar the finish where the end of the slide stop goes into the rear hole.

Some recoil rods have the spring loaded pin that will protrude too far and may need to be pushed forward to allow the slide stop to enter.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Shadow. This does help reaffirm my suspicions. But, how do you keep the spring loaded pin out of your way?

You may have to take a small punch to push it forward while sliding the slide stop back in place. I don't think the pin in the recoil rod screws into place on the stainless rod assembly. You might want to test this to see if it will screw in...

When I got my 1076 and tried to do a slide removal the stainless steel recoil rod's pin was pretruding more than any of my other 10xx series.
I fiddeled with it and got the slide off and back on and it functioned correctly for firing ammunition.

The aluminum recoil rods appear to be made with the pin a little differently (the pin maybe cupped and fitted from the inside the steel retainer) spring added and crimped onto the aluminum recoil rod.
