Talking 3rd gen bug

I think I have been bitten, I've only had my 3913 for a few days but I'm so far truly in love with it! I have handled many 3rd gens over the past month and like the feel of all of them, aside from one gritty trigger LS. I don't have a particular "need" for any other models so if I get another one it will be off a "like to have" basis. In the like to have arena, it would allow for more room in the rarer 3rd gens. What are some of these models? This way I can keep an eye out for them at LGS and shows. I apologize if there is a better place to resource this info, if there is, please point me in the right direction. New to 3rd gens, but very willing to learn! Thanks as always guys!

Rare? I dunno if they're rare but some of the harder to find and nicer 3rd gens for me might include a 4513tsw or a 4566 or 3914. I'm sure there are others.

Yeah, the bug bit me in December 2006. Since that time I've had about 25 3rd generations past through my hands. Of those, 19 make up my current collection, including two 3913s and one 3913TSW (pre-rail).

I have a 4014 (550 made) and a 4576 (1386 made) which are hard to find. In addition, the 10mm pistols generally have low production figures: 1066 (5000+ made), 1006 (10,000+ made) and 1076 (15,000+ made). The other 10mm were produced in even smaller numbers.

Finally, if you find any of the blue/black 3rd generations in 99%+ condition, go for them. Those blue/black pistols turn into 95% or less very quickly. They show every little ding. HTH

Thanks for the info Denver, there is a 4014 at my LGS right now, listed as good condition for $400, I have not personally seen it. Also are there any references online that would be good reads as to how to gauge a gun, ie what make a G vs VG vs E, or 95% vs 99%?

Since you already have a 3913, why not stay with the xx13 series. I would go with a 4013 next then a 4513. Standard or the TSW series, you won't be disappointed with either series. I personally like the 3-4" barrels even though a 4566 is in the safe.

Would you care to share where the 4014 is located?

One cannot go wrong with a nice 4014 . . . or a 4013, come to think of it.

3rd gen bug? It's a nasty virus with no known cure... How do l know? Been there, got it! Started with the 40xx bug and then got bit with the 45xx. Life is short. Sometimes its good to be a hoarder.

And, that 550 units produced ain't no guess, either.

You better run, not walk, over and take a hard look at that puppy.

Agreed, if you include private party transactions. If that is not what you are referring to, please enlighten me!

Kas, I know we already covered this in PM, but I thought I would share open as well for others. In Va, with a CC permit you are exempt from the one handgun every thirty days law. A very nice perk for those that have nothing to hide from the gov. As Kas also pointed out, private transactions are outside the thirty day law as well. Also there is no limit in Va on long guns, only handguns.

Well, I will have bought two 3rd gens in two weeks now! I'm pretty excited about it, I ended up buying the 4014 that was at my LGS. Will post pics of it when I get it, I'm currently on delay. Thanks all, and I think I have truly been bitten!

Default 3rd gen bug

Ref the "bug" thing. I guess I'm on my 2nd go around with this "affiction". Carried numerous Gen 3s early in my career. Now that I have amassed the Glocks, Sigs and Paras, I find myself looking at those classic S&W autos again. So far I have a CS45 (added Big Dog grips--hated the "hump"), 457, 4040 and a clean 39-2, which I just put on layaway from Guns America. So we'll see how long I'll be down with this newest "bug".

soccerguy:

way to go! I love my 4014. It's my favorite pistol ever. If you didn't buy it I was going to ask you where it was located.

Where are you in VA? I'm a Hokie, and our son is there at school now as well at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Are you on a NICS delay? That has happened to me the last 3 guns I bought. 2 handguns (longer delay) and the last one was a new O/U Browning target gun (shorter delay).
I'm going to apply for a UPIN with the FBI which is one way to get around that and speed things up. It sucks for us law abiding enthusiasts/collectors!

VT, haha you were not the only one that told me that they were going to inquire about it if I didn't get it! I'm really looking fwd to it, have OEM grips on the way, which I much prefer over the Houge grips that are on it now. As far as the delay I'm on the State Police delay, because there is another person in the state with the same name and a very similar SSN. The lady I talked to at the State Police told me that its about a 30sec check for them, but I get put in line with everyone else so it takes about 2-3 days to get to mine. There is no firearm waiting period here in Va. If you clear you walk home with your purchase. I have no problem with the delay just an inconvenience more than anything. So right now I'm just waiting to get through the line!

I am curious about the UPIN, please enlighten me, the lady at the State Police told me there was no number that would speed it up, I asked. I have seen the UPIN space on the forms though.

I'm currently in Williamsburg as my gf is going to W&M for her Masters and I work in Richmond. I and my gf too are Hokies! I graduated from Tech in '05 and she in '07.
