The factory Winchester, Federal and Remington match wadcutter ammo, all shoots extremely well. That ammo is super expensive, so I use my own reloads. If I were going to buy factory, I'd probably buy Zero brand. You can find their re-manufactured .38 spl 148 gr. WC ammo at Roze Distribution, Inc. - Zero Bullets and Ammunition

Default Remington

Howdy,
If you are reloading I like the Remington bullets. Other than being nasty dirty they shoot second to none.
Good luck
Mike

I always liked the Remington 148 gr. HBWC bullets that came bulk in the wood case that weighed 70+ lbs. I think it held 4,800 bullets or something like that.

I use them with great success in an S&W M52-1 and a Jim Clark 61-E WC gun. It could shoot better than I could hold it back then ('67-'68) .

How do you deal with the messy lube everyone complains about?

I have used sme cast 148 gr. WC's but prefer the Remington 148 gr. LHBWC. My 52-1 purred like a kitten with that bullet and 2.8 gr. Bullsye with Rem SPP.

Default Messy lube

Howdy,
The Remingtons are my favorite. I have tried most common brands if not all.
As far as the messy lube. I flare my cases a little more than normal for the Remington bullets and then I crimp in separate step.
That shortens brass life some but used .38 cases are reasonable around here.
Good luck
Mike

I use to load my .38 WC match ammo on a Star Progressive loader. The Remington dry lube built up in the seating die after a few hundred rounds and it had to be cleaned out or the COL changed. Time consuming then but that was the way it was.

Jim,
I use a Dillon 550 and the Dillon seating plug is easilly removed for cleaning without disturbing die alignment.

By avoiding cast bullets. Try Berry's MFG, 148 grain DEWC. $86/1k from Powder Valley, Inc. plus about $10 delivery, depending on where you live.

Tony;

I also currently use a Dillon 550 for my loading needs including some .38 WC loading but not like I use to.

The issue that I was referring to w/the seating die was back in 1967-68.

And actually, I have to correct my previous post where I said Star Progressive press. The actual press was an exact copy made by John Phelps who worked for Star and when their patient ran out, Phelps made his presses.

I did have a Star press later on though and also used that for .38 WC's.
