Default S&W reliability tune on PPK

I know that the S&W website is updated from time to time,so that items and services may be added or removed.

I seem to recall that at one time they offered a gunsmithing package reliability job on PPK pistols- this might have been shortly after they began their production of the PPK series.

I don`t find it listed any more.

I`m toying with getting a PPK/S or PPK for CCW- my current pistol is a bit too big and I`d like something smaller to carry.

Does anyone else here remember S&W offering that service on PPK pistols?

I don't remember the package as being offered on the PPK/S. However if you are getting a PPK/S, I strongly urge you to get an older used gun. That is prior to S&W screwing with them, particularly as regards the extended grip. Find a good Interarms or other import and you will have a gun that will last forever. I had one in SS that I used for CCW all the time and allowed my youngest son to "borrow" for off duty, you all know how those stories end.............I am currrently dealing for a blue edition of the same model-maybe if I get lucky(buying another gun is omnly basd for me if my wife IDs it as a new(another) gun).

It's a shame that one would have to consider "Reliabilty Package" on a new firearm from a company such as S&W. Is this truely a sign of the times?

Buy a new one with confidence. They had some problems with the early production and have fixed them. So if you buy a used one make sure it has been back. You can verify with the SN. My new .32 worked first time and every time and I'm just about thru a 1000 rounds. Fit and finish were very very nice. Do a topic search. We had a couple of threads last fall.

Here we go again...

I have an early Smith PPK/S and love it. It is accurate, very reliable and is my regular carry gun. I have the CT laser grip and am very pleased with the ease with which it can dump a clip (I know...magazine!) in a tight group very quickly.

Others have prior PPK's and prefer them...I like the earlier one's too! But the Smith has a bit larger tang to cut down on the occasional slide bite and ad a bit more comfort...at least IMHO the Smith is as good as any others (I have shot the Interarms and one older German made.)

Buy what you like but give the Smith version its due consideration.

Does that laser sight work outside at your range or is it only a night aid?

avoid the stainless steel ones if you can, only go for blued steel as I think interarms didnt quite grasp the fact that in order to avoid stainless steel gailing you need to use two different kinds of stainless steel to avoid gailing, one type on the slide, another on the frame.

plus it seems wrong to have a stainless version of it, and also I posted about the PPK here and its reliability issues a little while back, hope this helps

Walther ?

The laser is visible in most light conditions except direct sunlight. Just got back from the range today where another shooter who had never shot a gun with a laser sight tried my PPK/S and loved it. Follow up shots are very fast and accurate. There are those who look down on laser sights as a crutch but I believe that anything that makes you faster with accuracy is a good thing.

I don't have lasers on any of my revolvers but I rarely carry them...all three of my carry autos have lasers. I don't see a down side.

I am only speaking re: S&W not Interarms. Agree with you about Interarms having issues. My S&W .32 PPK works flawlessly. Maybe their metal balance is different. Where would one look for the galling between alloys beingg an issue? Thanks

If I paid attention to reviews, I probably wouldn't buy anything.

where the metals meet, the rails as I had an interarms SS that started having some werid marks in the rails themselves from what looked to be gailing, which I've never had happen with any other semi auto so I decided to get rid of it asap.

and it was a really rough gun to begin with from the feel of the metal, probably an early 80's brushed stainless gun

and the funny thing is I think I saw it at the range about a month ago in the hands of a father teaching his kid to shoot and the thing was jamming every other shot and as to why I think it was mine is because he said it was a ppk, not the PPK/s that everyone usually bad mouths and I had accidentally left a slight scratch mark over the interarms mark on the right side, a very distinct one and it had it.

and as to the gun that replaced it, that would be an italian beretta 85, not a bad gun, but just make sure you leave the grips on while cleaning it as its got a few parts on the outside that are held in by the grips and if your not careful you might unwittingly undo one of them like I did with the trigger spring during cleaning with the grips off on the right side where I must have unwittingly pulled on something and it lead to the trigger spring coming undone, how? I really dont know and I cant specficially remember what I did.

basically just leave the grips on while field stripping the gun and you should be fine in that regard if you ever get your hands on a beretta cheetah.
