Default What year is my 9mm model 39-2?

I just finished school, moved for work to Idaho, and finally have time to do the things I have missed for years now. This includes researching some of the guns my wife and I have. So, one of my curiosities that I have wanted to pursue is the year of our 39-2 9mm. The serial # starts with A201xxxx. How can I find out what year it is?

Welcome to the forum.

I think you have too many XXXX's in your serial number.

Having said that, if you meant A201xxx, the book says shipped in 1973 / 1974.

Enjoy!

I have just aquired a 39-2 with the ser# A303XXX. What year? But also where do you go to find this information. While it's great to have a place to get this information for one weapon, I would like to have this information at my disposal. Any information would be helpful, and appreciated!

Gotta love those nickeled ones! Two items of interest for me are the optional fully adjustable sight and the darker walnut of the grips on this one - something sometimes seen on the earlier Model 39 no dash.

Goony, When I got this weapon, the guy I got it from said it was his dads. And he said his dad was an FFL. He had it in his safe, and rarely shot it. Said it had had less than 200 rnds since 1986. I stripped it down and deep cleaned it. The Grips had some kind of gunk on 'em. When i cleaned them off, they came out light like normal. As far as dollar-value, I probably have too much in it( I traded a Sig P250 40S&W subcompact for it). But I couldn't sell or trade that Sig, so when this trade came along, I figured it would be easier to turn. Little did I know I would love this weapon. So we shall see. I want an M&P 40 or 9 compact to go with my M&P fullsize. maybe later.

Default 39-2 production date

Hi everybody, I'm a newbie to the forum and have several S&W pistols. I've got a 9 mm 39-2 and a Bodyguard 380. Love them both.

One reason I'm drawn to S&W is that my dad lived and grew up in Westfield Mass. and worked at the Springfield Armory prior to joining the service during WWll once he turned 18.

I too would like to know how the age of my 9 mm. It is serial #689XXX. What year would it be?

Thanks and looking forward to being part of the forum.

You won't find a finer shooting 9mm than a model 39. Nice nickel 39.

looking for the same type of info on this 39-2 Hopefully i can upload the pictures. The S/N is wierd though TCL4xxx or TOL4xxx? It's not blued but not Nickle plated. I'm assuming a Stainless Steel? A friend of mine is offering it to me but I don't know a fair price. He says it's NIB never fired with a reciept when his dad bought it. Was given to him as a gift and he isn't into guns. I'd like to know what it's worth and the year it was built. Thanks.

You need to post the correct model number, being stainless and with that serial number prefix it can't be a 39-2......

picked this beauty up this week, was a lend lease to someone since it has the Century import stamp. not sure as to year built or shipped. all in all it's very clean with original box, tools, and warranty card. one of my favorite pistols!

Pistol dates to '78-'79, the box is not original to your particular gun, it's from the mid to late sixties at the latest, it's a beauty regardless.....

I recently inherited a S&W Model 39-2. I'm a rifle guy, and know next to nothing about pistols. Any information, no matter how basic, that anyone can provide is greatly appreciated. This example has been well used, but functions perfectly. The frame has a glossy "stainless" finish, but feels lighter than steel. The slide is finished in the same manner on the sides, but is brushed on top. It has a ramp front sight with a red insert, and an adjustable rear sight which is black (blued?). The safety, hammer, trigger, slide stop and ejector are all black, and the barrel and guide rod appear to be the same. Grips are dark wood, with gold S&W medallions. I only have one magazine, which is made of steel and holds 8 rounds of 9mm Luger. Unfortunately no box, papers, or second magazine were included. Serial #A5278XX. Thanks a lot, everyone.

The nickle plated Model 39-2s have the same parts blued as you describe. I wouldn't doubt that you have a nickeled pistol. Not all 39-2s have the red plastic insert in the front sight: it's a nice touch.

Edited to add: S&W magazines are stamped S&W, and sometimes the caliber, on the bottom of the floorplate. All except one: I have a 39 magazine where apparently the floorplate went through the machine upside down, and as a result, it's stamped on the inside instead of the outside.

Thanks for the information, Cyrano. Sorry for being a pest, but I have a couple more questions, in addition to date of manufacture.

Were the original factory magazines blue regardless of the finish of the pistol? I just found an S&W stamped 8-round magazine which fits flush with the base of the gun. I think the 8-round stainless magazine which was in the pistol when it was given to me must be aftermarket (it has a red follower and a black, plastic extension on the base plate).

Also, is +P ammunition a go or no-go for this model? I realize use of such ammunition will accelerate wear on any weapon; I'm simply wondering whether firing it at all is dangerous.

Thanks again!

Original factory magazines were all blue, regardless of the finish. I passed up a nickeled 39 once before I knew that. The +P question is still open: S&W says no, but perhaps a lot of that is CYA. I wouldn't shoot much +P in my 39s, but I'd sure carry it.

Edited to add: Factory Model 39 magazines are stamped S&W or 9mm S&W on the bottom of the floorplate. All except one: I have a 39 magazine whose floorplate apparently went throught the stamping machine upside down: it's stamped S&W on the inside.

Thanks, that's what I had figured. If I enjoy shooting it I'll probably try to find a couple more of the factory magazines. It's an interesting pistol, & the styling is very unique. Kind of like the big ol' Cadillac of old semi-automatics, if you will.

Default New here.

Hey there folks. I'm new to the forum. I purchased my very first S&W handgun. It's a model 39-2. I'm in love with it. I carry it daily and its very comfortable. I'm trying to get an idea of how old it is. It is in awesome condition, but it doesn't have the wood grips like most of the 39-2's I've seen. It has black Pachmayr grips. Original mag, it says S & W on the bottom. My serial # is A148XXX. If anyone could help me out that'd be great. Love the forum. Lots of info on here and the people seem very helpful and into guns like myself. Hope to hear from someone soon! thanks

Well gents I jumped on the 39-2 bandwagon!. I love the M52-2's I have so much I figured the 39-2 was just natural A223xxx. Can anyone help with a manufacture date? After looking at the above I am thinking 1974/75? Just want to confirm the logic. Thanks in advance.

I am also looking for a period correct box and instruction manual if anyone can help there as well.

It sure is nice knowing there are guys out there your age who have an appreciation for the older all metal pistols, not just the tupperware models...

Any help with mine? A122XXX. I have been searching for one for the past 3 years and finally took her home the other day. They are impossible to acquire with California's stupid laws.

This is what I have done over the years to find out the birthdate of your S&W.
Go to the S&W website, go to resourses, go to contact and email your model and serial number.
Within two days you will get a reply.
Hope this helps.

Default serial numbers

I have noticed some interesting serial numbers in this post and I am impressed how knowledgeable most of you are! Can anyone tell me the significance of "TAC" as a prefix serial #?

I just picked up a nice blued 39-2 for $390 plus tax.

Serial number is A199XXX.

What year would this have been built. In doing a little research maybe 1973 or 1974?

Hopefully an expert could tell me.

As a side note, I got the pistol because I live in CT and we can only carry 10+1 or lower. So I figured I would get a single column 9mm. This feels great in my hand. I am so glad I got it. I just can't wait to get it to the range and try it out.

1973-1974 Is as close as I can come.
If I had to guess.. and it would be a guess/estimate I would say late 1973. A factory letter will give you an exact date.

FYI, A203xxx shipped in July of 1973. This is a relative comparison since S&W didn't necessarily ship in numerical order. The 39-2 is still considered one of the most ergonomically friendly shapes a pistol has ever taken. I take mine to the range regularly and enjoy shooting it every time. I like the plain, wide, dark blue sights. Easy on old eyes.
Enjoy yours,

Jerry

I called S&W today and spoke with Roy Jinks, I told him the serial number, and he was like, it's either from 1970 or 1971, then he hung up. It doesn't seem he is right though, as other members serial numbers don't jive with what he said.

Does anyone know if S&W still works on or rebuilds model 39's? If not, can anyone recommend a good S&W gunsmith? Thanks!!!! I want mine to be gone over before I shoot it. Think I want to get it refinished in nickel too!
