I have a set that just purchased for my blued S&W 61-2. They look much better than they did in the pictures. I have seen several very expensive wood grips for the S&W Model 2206, but I have never seen a wood grip for the S&W 2214/2213.

That's the first set I've seen for a 61. Are they custom?

I have no history on them, but they are nicely done. It appears from the back more than one was created, because it looks like a pattern had been created to make these wooden grips.

Legal, I was remiss in not congratulating you on your find. Way to go, digging out what you're looking for! And thanks for sharing them on the forum. I'm sure the 61 owners will be interested in seeing them. Hope you'll post photos of them on the 61.

It would be interesting to know from whence they came. The wood and finish looks very similar to the target grips on the 2206 TGT. Those were made by Herrett (Gun stocks by Herrett's Stocks, Inc.) and perhaps somebody else I haven't been able to determine.
Would you post photos of the back of those grips?

First, I'll post a picture of them on my S&W Model 61-2 after I touch sand them. Then I'll post a picture again after I put a shinny finish on them.

Again, here's the pictures of the backs.

Sorry I missed the thumbnail in the previous post of the backs. I'm not a woodworker, but that looks like the same oil rubbed finish as is on the 2206 TGT target grips. Are you sure another finish will adhere over that? I love the look of the finish on it now, but it's not my gun.
What is circled on the photo?

I circled that part on the back when I asked the seller what that raised part was on the back. Never got answer, but I got my answer when I put the wood grip on. It gives the wooden grip on left side a 4th point in securing non movement. That raised part is not on the plastic original. There are only two points securing non movement on the right grip. I wonder why.

You have probably talked me out of doing anything other than oil on these grips.

What type of oil due you think it is on the Model 2206 TGT grips?

My thought would be to contact herrett in the above link and find out what they use. While I was on that call I'd ask if they made any grips for the 61. Unless you can find out who made those grips, it's your best guess I suppose. Maybe a fine furniture refinisher can determine what the finish is. They would have experience in that sort of thing. I'd want to get an opinion from the most experienced person I could since you can't just go buy another set if they get messed up.

Herrett wasn't much help.

That's too bad. Unfortunately not many folks left at S&W that know much about them either. I'm tempted to write a reference book for these things. The factory just doesn't seem to be as sentimental about them as some of us are. I've spoken with Roy Jinks personally about them and he has a very dismissive tone when answering my questions. Not that he was rude or anything, he just kinda summed up what I was feeling from him when he said, " You know these aren't considered collectable, don't you?" lol.

In his universe, I suppose not. But collectability is in the eye of the shooter, right? They're important to me. Judging by sales prices, I must not be the only one. I mean we're not in Colt Python territory, but a couple of VR's have sold for right at $1000. Not too shabby.

I just found that there were two styles of grips when it comes to the right one for the S&W Models 422, 622 and 2206. Notice that about a 1/4 inch of the top of the right grip in the second image is cut off. Which style of grip came first and why the change?

Good question. I don't know the answer to why, but I can tell you that the pistols that use the grips in the bottom photo had Model x22 or 2206 stamped on the frame that is covered up by the grips in the upper photo. They moved the location of the model stamp on the frame.

Based on the fact that the VR's use the grips in the top photo, and those were the last year of production, it's a good guess they were the later style. The last years of production were moved out of the Springfield factory to Houlton. Perhaps something in the manufacturing process in Houlton prompted the change. Just a guess. Cost cutting would be a definite possibility. Maybe it took an extra step to stamp it there where it had been. Most changes are implemented to address an issue, or to cut cost. I don't see any issues with the difference, so I'm guessing it was cost related.

To be honest, while I have noted the difference, I have never investigated whether the difference had anything to do with which factory they were made in, or when the change was made. After examining a bunch of photos I thought I had established this was a Helton vs Springfield difference... however I found a 2206 made in Springfield with the model number over the trigger and the grips in your top photo, so they weren't all from Helton that way. Once again, undeniable truths of S&W products number one.... there are no absolutes with Smith and Wesson.

Still looking for wood grips for my S&W Model 2213.

I finally bought these wood grips for my S&W 2206 at a price $20 below what I had been seeing.

legal, nice find there. The color match is really good. The wood grains are very complimentary. I've seen many pair that just don't match well. Big differences in color or very different grain patterns. I'm not sure I've ever seen a truly matched set from the factory. Makes me think maybe they make a run of one side, then the other, and pull somewhat randomly from each bin.

Care to share what they sold for?

BTW, if you look at the plastic grips on the 13 and 14's it looks like they took the regular grips and just removed material from the bottom to match the smaller grip frame. It would be helpful if you would try to put those on the 13 or 14 and report if the spacing between the screw holes also match the holes for the shorter pistols. If so, you could always just cut off the bottom of the factory wood grips to match the frame and refinish.

I paid a total of $62.00. I have been watching and bidding on similar grips for a month and a half. I have seen other pairs sell for $63.00, $93.40 and $88.40. I did very good, all things considered. There is one day and 11 hours left on a pair on ebay right now.

Someone has already cut down wood grips of S&W Model 422 and put them on their S&W Model 2214.

Nice.
I had a mint nickeled model 59 that someone fitted a pair of model 39 wooden grips to. Beautiful. Wish I still had it.
