Default Paper / Plastic S&W gun boxes

Can anyone tell me approximately when S&W switched from the one-piece paper boxes to the plastic variety for semi-auto pistols? Did they make the transition for revolvers around the same time?

I spoke to S&W customer service today (on an unrelated matter) and the guy mentioned in passing they had discontinued the blue plastic cases in favor of old-style cardboard boxes. He told me guns were now being delivered in the new cardboard containers, however the M&P series pistols would still use black plastic cases.

I asked if S&W would now sell the empty cardboard boxes, since they currently sell replacement blue plastic cases for about $10 each. I was told they probably would in the future, but he didn't know when....perhaps after they sell all the remaining blue boxes.

I recently bought a new M&P 9c and it came in one of the Blue plastic cases instead of the black ones..guess they still have not decided yet...

As a partial observation, the 5906 I bought in July 2000 came in a blue plastic box. The 4566, 459, 629, 60, etc. came along in the '80s to early '90s and were all in the one-piece boxes. M&P 40c (2008) was in black box.

I bought a J-frame 442 in 2010. It came in the blue plastic box lined with protective foam. Kinda cool.

In 2011, I bought an S&W .40 semi auto. It came in a cardboard box lined with nothing. Kinda chintzy and disapointing.

My last two S&W purchases were an SD9 and a M&P22. The former came in blue cardboard box and the latter in a nice plastic M&P box. Two be completely honest either way they just end up on a shelf collecting dust while their contents end up in a safe or in soft cases within my shooter's bag.
