Here's the real skinny:
Magazines made BEFORE the black follower mags are not necessarily interchangeable. Example: if you have a 4516 no dash, the mags that came with it MIGHT not lock back the slide on the 4516-1. ALL of the later mags (black follower) work in ALL of the 45xx pistols I have ever tried them in. I have four 45xx guns, and fifteen mags of various vintages, and they are, in my experience, interchangeable. I know early 7-round mags for the 4516 had a few growing pains. Get later yellow or black follower mags, and you'll never have a problem.
ALSO: The black follower works in the older mags very nicely. I have swapped the yellow ones out for black in a number of mags with good (perfect) results.

In addition to what Squidsix says, the mags which came with the 4516-1 (with yellow followers) are marked "To be used with only the -1 model", so check that those are the ones you get with it.
They are nice guns, and you should be pleased if you get it.

Any of the 45xx magazines, when you switch them to black followers, will work beautifully in the 4516 of any flavor. If you end up with mags that say "this must use a yellow follower", you can get the black ones from Midway for $2.50, and swap them. Those mags were marked that way BEFORE they came out with the black follower magazines.

Are my 4513TSW mags the same as the 4516? I got 6 mags with my 4513TSW and they all have black followers. Don't see too many listings for 4513 mags, but I frequently see listings for 4516.

Slightly off topic - is the 4513 and 4516 dimensionally the same? I see mags, grips and holsters advertised for the 4516, rarely for my 4513. Seems to me with the S&W numbering system they should be the same dimensionally.

The 4513 TSW was, I believe, a six-round mag like the cs45. It would be too short for the 4516.
The 4513(non TSW) was dimensionally the same as the 4516, only alloy, and therefor lighter.

squid thanks for the reply. The 4513TSW has a 7 round mag and you can load it +1.

If it's a 45xx mag and holds 7 rounds it will work in the 4516.

Old thread, but I have a question- shot a Shorty 45 today and had 4 yellow follower mags. Several times the bullets failed to feed. Would the black follower magazines be better? Is the difference in the follower itself, or is it the actual shape/cutout of the magazine mouth?
