6904 and 4006
Went into my local gun shop and found a 6904 for $399.99 and a 4006 for 449.99.........both look to be in excellent condition. I'd like both but will most likely have to settle for one right now. Any insight? I am leaning towards the 6904 since it seems like I can use the same mags with my 669. Should I try to offer any less or is this about the going rate? Thanks!

I don't think $400 is a horrible price for a 6904 but it's not low enough to excite me, and given today's popularity of the .40cal, that price is high-end for a 4006 in my opinion.
Having a 669 already makes a 6904 at least a little redundant, certainly it is a better pistol with definitely improved ergonomics, but I would say that if it were me in your shoes, I'd hold my cash, let the jackpot build a bit and spring on a better deal when it presents itself.
If no, and ya GOTTA have one, perusing the stock and available prices for exactly these models on Gunbroker might help you judge the prices they show.

I'd make an offer on the 6904...... $300-325 ...... I got one this past winter for $260............they knew it would be a slow seller, given the low prices and rebates on M&Ps and Shields........I'm a good long standing customer....... knew I'd take it. There are a lot more 6906s out there than 6904s................ so if you like blue/black.
I'd always go with a 9mm over a .40.... also you can use 59xx series magazines... with +2 adapters........

The .40SW, and the 4006, are fading into oblivion. The only thing that would attract me to a 4006 would be one of the CHP turn-ins. They're pretty nice and have an acc rail. I have a 6906 but they're a wide and heavy pistol by today's standards - but I would sure take a 6904 over a plain-vanilla 4006. There's a 3914 - without box - available here locally for $400 and has been up at least a week or so. If I had some spare cash I'd hop on a 3914, or 3913, a lot sooner than one of the wide-body Smiths ...

It is a 4006 tsw with "tactical" on the slide. Didn't catch if it was a CHP or not

I agree with Bam Bam on the price as 40's are not all that popular at this time. Most of them are not a comfortable gun to shoot either.

I scored one of the California Highway Patrol 4006's with the built in rail for $379.95 in 99% condition so that price seems a little high to me. Depending on condition 6904's run $300.00 to $400.00 in my area. Hope this helps.
