Default 4516 magazine compatability

Just picked up a 4516-2 from my favorite LGS. Plastic case, original paperwork including bill of sale from April 2000, and 2 mags. After a thorough cleaning I've concluded this gun is nearly new - it really looks THAT good. The 2 mags have black followers that likely are original to the gun. I've read some threads about the 4516 mags, that some versions (no dash, dash 1,2 or 3) are compatible only with certain mags, and follower color determines which to use. Is there a difference in how the mag/follower works with the slide? A few posts say they've used all types of mags with no problems. I'd like to pick up a few spares, will look for black followers - just wondering if its mandatory

Congrats on your 4516-2! One of the best compact 45's out there IMO.

The black follower mags were the last issue for the 3rd gen 45's. They were the standard issue on all of the last LE contract 3rd gens too.

I have shot various 4516's over the years using all the different FACTORY mags, red/orange and yellow followers, and never experienced a failure to feed or stopage.

That said, I only use the latest - black follower - mags in my for serious S&W 45's.

I would not have a problem with Mec-Gar for range/competition use but would NEVER use a Pro-Mag for any purpose. They are junk in my experience. Hope this helps! Enjoy that 4516-2!

We like range reports too! Regards 18DAI

I have owned over half a dozen of the little gems and I have to agree with every single word 18DAI has said. Except I still have lots of orange and yellow followers. Never had a problem with any of them at all. As in Zero.
