New To Me 659/5906/6590?
This little guy arrived today.... A Gen 3 5906 frame, marked as a 659, with a 5906/659'ish slide. The box is the correct serial number, modeled 6590. It appears to be 1 of 150 transitional guns from the 659 to 5906 series. It's like new, minor signs of handling and next to no sign of shooting. Happy Happy Happy!

Very nice!
The "history" behind it is neat.

Neat guns!
I love the transitionals. Kinda like S&W letting us have it gently!
I have a coupla questions for the guys in the know:
First, are these transitionals equipped with the half-cock hammer (1st and 2nd gen) or the "no-notch" non half cock hammer of the 3rd gen?
Second, what's with the julian date (spec. ord.) on the OP's post: 1408?
Does that mean the 408th day of 1991?
Did time warp at the Mothership during the transitional days?
John?

Every one i've seen in the original box has the same spec order number of 1408. All of mine have the half cock hammer, as well as the late second gen phillips head safety screw, although rumor has it some came with the third gen type. They all carry the product code of 104001, and from what i've learned were all shipped in late 1988. Here's a pic of a copy of the original sales flyer....

We had several 659's crack the frame. At the time S&W replaced them with 5906 frames. Unfortunately today all the frames are gone and any needing replacement are denied repair. So seeing them in that configuration isn't unheard of, this is the first time I've seen one new in the box. They aren't that common.

The phillips head screw was actually a late second gen feature, replacing the often lost button head screw. Third gens were equipped with the new style with no screw, they used a new lever with a plunger and spring that retained it.

Thanks, grif!
Must be my memory fading.
I thought the phillips screw came before the allen screw but I guess I remembered it backwards.

Good Find! It is always to have something different. I got my 1st 5906 last week. (never shot 1 before) Shot it today. Looks very good. Functioned flawlessly. It might strange, but when the gun cycles it is like a rolling motion. Not recoil. Enjoy your new Smith! Bob
