I did a search for this and came up with nothing so if I screwed up and there is an existing thread, please direct me to it and forgive me. I'm hoping to tap into the S&W Forum brain trust to help me with a grip change on my new to me 1319. I bought it the other day and it already had Hogue grips on it. I want to return it to the stock hard plastic ones, but am not sure how to do it. The Hogues seem to be held on by screws and the stock plastic ones appear to have a pin thru them. I'm totally unfamiliar with how grips on these model Smiths work. Any pics to show how its done would be appreciated.

Like Dale, was asking, the same grip pin that held the original grips on, holds on the plastic insert that the Hogues screw into. So if the pin is there just punch it out, get a set of original grips.
Replace spring,springcap, then grips onto the frame, line-up and put the pin back through the grips/frame.

Last time I checked, the grips and pins were available from S&W and several parts suppliers. Installation is pretty intuitive when you see the parts. The plastic block which the Hogues screw in to is not used as the mainspring cup fits in to the stock grip. The pin holds everything together (a punch is needed for removal).

Thanks for the quick replies folks. I haven't attempted to remove the Hogues yet. I'm gonna do that right now.

Okay, that was easy. The pin is still in that block thingy that the Hogues screw into. The obvious question now is: will the block thingy that's on it now work with the stock grips or will I need to hunt down a stock block thing?

*******EDIT******Okay, I went back and carefully re-read the previous posts and what Hill Country said that I won't need the block thingy as that part is built into the stock grip. Excellent. Now I'm gonna have to find a stock grip.

Your doing good LabTech, just go slowly. And when you get the stock grips, be sure and seat the cap covering the tail of the mainspring into the recess in the original grips, then rock it forward making sure that Tge ears on the front of the grips go into the mag well. Push it forward and watch to see the hole line up with the lower frame (where the Hogue screws were) then push the pin in. You might have to give it a wac with a plastic mallet to seat it as there will be an indent in the pin. Then Viola your in business! Dale

I just did this job on my new-to-me 3913. Taking out the pin and removing the old grip was easy. Installing the new grip was fairly easy, too. The hard part for me was re-inserting the pin.

Kind of hard to explain without pics, but I had to use some needle nose pliers to squeeze the lower, outer part of the grip against the lower, inside part of the frame as hard as possible to try to align the holes well enough to push in the pin. To keep from scratching the new grip and the frame with the pliers, I used a cotton cloth as a buffer. Probably would've been better to use some scrap leather or rubber, but the cotton cloth was what I had laying around at the time. I also inserted a small punch into the holes to help align them while trying to drive in the pin.

Maybe because I'm new to firearms and replacing grips, but I thought it was a major pain in the neck re-inserting that little pin. I also think I may have boogered up the grip with all the pounding and pin-driving I did. I'm almost afraid to remove the grip again to find out if I may have messed up the frame, but I suppose I'll have no choice but to do it all over again when it comes time to replace the hammer/main spring.

Just my opinion and nothing to do with aesthetics. I found the Hogue grips a whole lot better for accuracy and control.

I finally scored a set of factory grips for my 3913 and replaced the Hogues yesterday. With the aid of the booklet provided in the above link, my factory grip installation was unbelievably quick and easy. About a five minute job from beginning to end. The feel of the pistol is greatly improved, in my opinion.

Good job, Labtech. Sounds like you didn't run into the same trouble I did trying to drive that pin back in. Everything for me was easy-breezy, too, until it came time to re-install the pin. I checked and double-checked to make sure the grip was flush and well-aligned like in the pics, but it didn't matter. That pin just wouldn't go in, despite the whacking I gave it with a hammer. Finally went in after cursing at it a bunch of times (which also seems to work when I run into trouble while wrenching on my truck)!

Reviving an old thread to say thank you to Fastbolt.

I just got new 3913 grips in the mail from S&W and your link to replacing grips was just the ticket to make this job easy. It took me about 60 seconds, maybe less!

The old Hogues pop off with two screws, then I pushed out the main spring pin with a punch just by pushing on it with my hand. The Hogue adapter falls off and the new factory grips slide right on. I pushed the pin back in with my fingers.

Wow, is the grip ever thin now.... I'll have to take it to the range and see if I like it or not. They are really thin! And I'm not real big on the plasticky sound they make, but the proof is in the shootin'! I can always switch back.

Now I'm looking for the single side safety...

I usually have to use a plastic mallet to drive the grip pin back in the frame. It's probably easier on guns that have the plastic(nylon) spring cups, instead of the metal spring cups.

It's also not uncommon to see some small bits of aluminum shavings punched out the far side of the grip frame after whacking the steel grip pin back inside the frame. A bit startling & scary the first time you see it, though.

Making sure the side plate hasn't been tweaked or damaged is pretty important. As is getting the top of the grips seated fully forward under the frame's grip tang, so the manual safety lever has proper freedom of movement. The pics I included in my previous post shows how to tell the difference.

I just got a set of the light gray ladysmith grips for $26 from numrich. My 3913 is NOT a Ladysmith... but! I kind of think it was a cool detail from the factory, ahead of its time, and gives this awesome handgun a unique look.
