Default Model 915.Didnt know.

This followed me home today from the local pawn shop.I knew about the model, didnt know about the 2-tone option.Checked the standard catalog, doesnt mention much about the 915.I suppose this could've been done post factory, just doesnt appear to be.Any thoughts? Jobyt

Those aren't 915 sights, so I would guess someone used some 5906 parts to make it.
Is a great looking gun though. I like bi-tones.

I don't know whether the 915 was made in a bi-tone finish or not, but the sights do appear to be the same as my 915 sights.

I agree on the sights; but it's very hard to tell! If it was made using a 5906 upper, it should have an ambidextrous safety/decock. It's cool though! And, yes, the uppers of the 5906 and 915 are totally interchangeable!

Those are absolutely 915 sights. The 915 did not come with Novak sights. It looks to me like someone took parts (slide, etc.) from an older 5906 (pre-Novak) and swapped them with the 915 or they simply refinished them. Almost looks hard-chromed to me. I have never seen a factory 915 that looked like that. That being said; I like it. Looks great.

Thanks again for the replies.Somewhat intrigued by the possibility of the slide being off a 5906,I field stripped the pistol and found the bottom of the slide with the last three digits of the serial number stamped on it.That answers that.I also found an older post showing a 2-tone mod 910(stainless slide),so I'm assuming the option was available for the 915.Jobyt

Then I would bet it has been refinished. The 910 series was available with a stainless slide because S&W also made a 910S in stainless. They did not make a 915 in stainless. I also just noticed that all the small parts and pins are silver, which further substantiates the theory it was refinished. Could be hard chrome, NP3 or even a stainless-like cerakote.

Love the 915. Like all S&W autoloaders it shoots great and I have really enjoyed it. I really regret having to sell it.

The one on gunbroker did not mention a refininsh. Maybe they made those in short supply. $350 for hardly used sounds great. I was told on this forum (mlk18 I believe) that they were only in prouction for a year, and that was quite a few years ago. Good find.

You were close. I believe there was two years of production; 1993-1994. But with as many of them as there seems to be around, they made a lot of 915's in those two years!

Happy Easter!Had a chance this morning to try the 915.It didnt disappoint.Would like to find a replacement rear sight for it.It seemed to hold its own against some of my other favorite 9mm's. Its a keeper! Jobyt

Looking at the close finish match on all the small parts like hammer and trigger I'd go with a refinish of some sort. The early stainless 5900 series that did have flash chomed trigger/hammer didn't exactly match the stainless slide. There aren't a lot of options on the early rear sights, you need to mill a little off the top behind the dovetail to fit Novaks which seem to be the best way to go.
