Default Another melonite 4566 thread....

Another member inquired if I was going to post another melonite 4566 thread. I originally wasn't, but as one of those with nothing to get excited about by S&W today, I figured why not.

While ugly plastic guns with lousy triggers and droopy dust covers are all the rage these days, there is a very good looking TDA S&W 45, still available NIB.

The original melonite 4566, rail free, with Novak night sights, was evidently made in a substantial number. I currently own RJF3114 and have another on the way to me. I'll post its serial when I recieve it. I've seen numbers as high as RJF3156 and one with an RJF30XX on an auction board.

I love mine. I originally aquired it in 2009. The officer I purchased it from told me he had purchased it "..six years ago to use as a duty gun, but wound up going with another pistol..". Mine is a tack driver. It has the usual 3rd generation reliability. Eats everything. It looked so good I was hesitant to put much wear on it. So I wound up qualifying and carrying my decock only spurless hammer stainless 4566.

Info from other folks indicates that these were done up from 1999 till 2001 in at least two batches. One batch evidently sat in the S&W vault till they were sold to distributors in 2009.

A kind member from Texas put me onto a number of these that were NIB in a store in Texas. The store advertises heavily on the net. I tried very hard and unsuccessfully to purchase a NIB melonite 4566 from them.

Evidently, even though the 4566's were in the display case at their retail store, they are only able to be purchased in the store. The store will not ship out of state. Store MGR : "Is the pistol on our website?" 18: "No." Store MGR : "Then you can't buy it." 18: "OK, list one on your website and I'll give you my credit card info." Store MGR : " We can't do that. Contact the website sir." 18: "So, you are telling me that you won't sell me a pistol that you have available for retail sale?" Store MGR : "Contact the website sir."

Long story short, these.......folks, would make a preacher cuss. The "website" wouldn't sell me the gun because the store in McKinney TX "...isn't connected to the web sales..". Whatever.

I located Antique Arms in McKinney TX. Mr Parker was more than happy to take my order and go down the street to fill it, and ship my melonite 4566 to NC. There are six left if anyone else wants one.

Now that I have a spare, I will qualify with the melonite 4566 in the upcoming May requals. It is a very nice looking, superb handling, tack driving 45. At $650 delivered, it doesn't cost that much more than the ugly plastic guns with the lousy triggers and droopy dustcovers either. Alot more gun for the money too! Regards 18DAI

Droopy dustcovers? I wonder if they make a blue pill to solve that one?

I have to echo the sentiments about how well the 4566 shoots, and I'm sure glad that I'm not anywhere near that shop in TX, otherwise like I heard on a TV commercial, I'd be on a "Ramen noodle budget" for quite some time.

Well, I got RJF3185. Since I've seen RJF30XX I'm thinking there was a least 200 of these made - in the RJF prefix anyways.

Anyone have or seen a Melonite 4566 in the RJF32XX range? Regards 18DAI

Came across this thread. Can't help with spottings in the RJF32xx range. But as FYI....I have the Melonite 4566 with a serial number exactly one less than what you just got. Picked it up a year or more ago off gun broker. Don't know its history, but it has night sights dated '99 so would make sense if it was from 1999.

18DAI, what agency do you work for? I need to apply since they allow 3rd Gen's for duty.

I'm assigned to the DA squad with the Rockingham County District Attorney's Office.

The Madison and Mayodan Police departments here, also still use 3rd gen S&W 45's. Regards 18DAI

Default 4566 melonite

Found this last night on armslist and got it $425. Pretty good deal, even with no box and one mag. Decock only, night sights glow but are dim. Serial number is RJF310X. Feels good, and can't wait to shoot. Shows no wear except at barrel locks.

Congrats! Beautiful pistols. Both of mine have great triggers and are tack driving accurate. Especially using Winchester 230 grain Ranger JHP.

Let us know how yours shoots. Regards 18DAI

Nice find, Bartman!

I would love to see S&W release a batch of WVSP style 4566's. I know a lot of people don't like rails but I do and find the integral rail like that on the WVSP's current guns sexy and practical.

I guess we can always dream...

Greetings, am wondering now, just how many of these were made?
I see comments that say "substantial numbers" and I also see less than 300.. Are they a collectable rarity?

Welcome to the forum!

Less than 300 sounds about right. Based on observed serial numbers. One up on the auction boards brought in excess of $1K recently. They rarely come up for sale, so rare would be accurate in this case. Fine 45s. Regards 18DAI

So you're the one that outbid me! Welcome to the forum. I call for dibs if you ever decide to sell it. Rest assured, it will be as represented. I have bought several items from Haris, he is one of the "good guys".

Best regards, Bob

Sorry about that Bob, just had to have it.. Just starting my gen3 stash, funny enuf I came across the thread on this board where Haris bought the same gun a few years back... Infact I just scored a nice pristine 3913TSW from guns- international last night, that one was $650 (had to brag a little more) guess I'll help drive everyone's gen3 values up.. I want a nice 39-2 now. After a couple weeks of studying these firearms, i am starting to think it wasn't such a good idea.. Shhh don't tell the wife.. Yet.

That 4566M I just looked at on the auction board is a different bird. It has a Melonite finish and front cocking serrations on the slide. The cheesy laser etched warning about the decockers springing back to the ready to fire position is on the left side of the frame, vice the right side of the slide on the "regular" 4566Ms.

There was a batch of 10 Melonite 4566s made with front slide cocking serrations and 4.25 barrels. But they had 3 letter prefixes in the serial number that were the owners initials, Im told.

Interesting that the owners description states " 4 inch barrel" but the box label says 4.25. It resembles the 18 LAPD Special 4566s, except they were two tone.

My guess is that it is a salesmens sample pistol. Those were guns that LE reps showed agencies to see if there was any interest in a model.

If indeed it is a former officers pistol, it may be from a small batch ordered by an agency. The RJF prefixed 4566Ms originally were ordered by a small New England maritime LE agency. IIRC that was a total order of 50.

If I wasnt retired and downsizing my collection, Id be bidding on that gun. Regards 18DAI

I ran across in my research that they were for the New Hampshire Marine Patrol. Don't know if such a thing even exists, but sounded good. [Edited to add: it most certainly does, as a division of the NH Dept of Public Safety; and a salute to them!]

Funny, though, how stories get embellished....I also read in less authoritative sources that they were special order for the DEA, and I also seem to recall someone saying they were special order for U.S. Marshals Service. I guess both of those sound way more glamorous than "New Hampshire Marine Patrol."

Interesting pistol, though. That Melonite must be the real deal, if that was indeed an officer's carry sidearm and shows as little wear as that one does.

Still, best advice is always "buy the gun, not the story."

Hi vigil617,

I tried to rundown and confirm the rumor about the RJF prefix 4566Ms being made forvthe US Marshal Service Special Operations Group. I posted on several boards, including a private one and spoke to several Marshals I know.

The best I got was that "..it is quite possible as the 4566 was a very popular choice for a sidearm, back when individuals got to choose....". So there you have it.

I have been told that the RJF prefix 4566Ms that CDNN was selling a few years back numbered around 40 to 50 examples. Supposedly these came from s&w having been stored since 2001. Dunno. Anyways, there do not appear to have been very many made.

Maybe one of the expert collectors will descend from Mount Springfield and throw a bone to the great unwashed. Then we will know the story behind these guns. Regards 18DAI

Default Yet another one

Bought my melonite 4566 last April from another member. It is decock only, but has no decock only markings. Has Trijicons also.

S/N is VEC12XX. Product code is 108225. Spec. Order is 6059.

Doesn't look like it has been fired much at all. Haven't had the heart to shoot it yet!!

S/F,

RAS

Rasmith3442 that one sounds interesting. Never seen a 4566M in that serial prefix. Does it have front cocking serrations? Briley bushing?

I like that yours does not have the cheesy laser etching. Wish mine did not. My decock only PC 45CQBs have no such warnings. Regards 18DAI

18,

No front cocking serrations. Don't think it has a Briley bushing - I have never had the slide off.

Spent the day at the range chronographing. Put a bunch of rounds thru my 4513 TSW, M&P 45, a few thru my 4506, a bunch thru my 649, and a bunch thru a Kahr MK9.

Send me off to waterboard me, but I am really starting to like the Kahr trigger.

Why can't S&W make an all metal, striker fired gun, with a revolver trigger? I know, there are other threads on this subject.

Next time out, will take the 4566 to see what she'll do.

S/F,

RAS aka Walter

Me too. I've even kinda been on the prowl for a 4566 lately, but didn't even bother bidding on it. Figured it was headed straight for the $1200 ballpark. I'm jealous, someone got a heck of a buy on that whole package.

What's the old expression - "nothing ventured, nothing gained?"

Would've made a nice addition to the little collection, but I set myself a limit and it didn't work out. I'm a bit relieved, actually, as I found a nice 625 this week and popped on that one as my first N frame. My "gun fund" would have gone into the red if I had won the auction.

I thought it would fetch more also, lucky buy.. Heck That blued 4505 brought in $1125, but I am glad I didn't play on either... I had my eye on a CS45 and lucked out on it instead, so 18DAI.. I don't need one of those! Lol
