Actually someone I know sold a Pace style camaro, white with orange stripes, orange interior and convertible. I believe it was a 1968 model but can't remember if that's with or without the wing vents. It brought $28,000 years ago, possibly 10 years ago. He said it would have brought more had the engine been original.

The seller sets a price on something and the market decides whether that price will be held and for how long. it's called capitalism.

Note - I just reread your post and saw you specified 15 years old. I don't know that a Camaro at that age would bring as much as a new one.

Reviving an old thread here.

Given the panics of the last year, any updates on values?

Well I've come to figure out its all in where you shop. I've found two LGS within an hour from my home that are very reasonable. I think every store is stockpiled with guns now so prices have gone back to normal if not better. I just put a gorgeous 639 on layaway. Paid $360 and was happy

That's a great deal. Most of the even pristine or NIB 3 gens I see are under $600. Most are under $500. I've bought 2 LNIB for under $400.

To me, even at $600 a NIB or LNIB 3rd gen is a bargain.

For me, I would go up to $600 for a LNIB 9Mm or 40. .45 and 10MM would go as high as $750. But they gotta be LNIB. Deals are out there if you wait. I just got an excellent 6906 for $385. No box or papers, but round trigger guard and all stainlees trigger and hammer.

A decent gun is gonna set you back $500. Would i pay a tiny bit more for a gun that is like new but no longer made? Yep. S&W is the only manufacturer that has the four things I want in a semi auto. No plastic, hammer fired, manual safety, and mag disconnect. I would sell two Glocks to buy one third gen.

That being said, I have a Shield. It fits the conceal carry purpose. If I can find a stainless CS9 in like new condition, the Shield will be sold.

Prices im seeing on 3rd gen Smiths are about the same as they were pre panic. On avg they are in the $350-$400 range with a few odd ones being in the $500 range. This is on 9, 40 and 45 and span from compacts to TSW to full size.

Within the last 6 months I bought 2 45s. 4563TSW for just over $400 and 4566 DAO just under $400. Both prices are + tax and bg check. I had to let a few slide by because I cant just buy them all when I run into them. The ones I let slide were a 4006 and 5906 TSW with rails @ $450ea. Another gun store just got a 411 for $399. A bit high for that model imo but it does have practically a new set of night sights.

Don't be discouraged.

The deals are out there.

In June I picked up a 1006, gun only (98%) with 2 magazines for $475.00.

In July I picked up a 4567, gun only (4566 with black slide and night sights)
(90% with some holster wear on the slide and frame),
with 3 magazines, for $300.00.

Third gens are out there. It just takes a bit of patience to find them.

How about this ?

I happened into a 6906 a month or so ago, in really good shape, but with no magazines. Got it for $320.xx, tax included. I really didn't need it and was actually looking for a more compact pistol for carry. I also have a 6904, in beat up shape, but a great shooter (my EDC). The lack of mags didn't bother me, as I have plenty for my 6904. It had the dreaded CAI import mark, though felt in operation almost as if it was new.

Anyway, as I said, I didn't need it. I decided to sell it off and find a small 9mm for carry (I am really tired of carrying the 6904 right now). Placed an ad, got ONE response.....and almost had to fight the guy to get my money back out of the 6906....and I was including two magazines with it. He harped endlessly on the "CAI mark" and it's effect in destroying the "collector value".....even though he wanted the gun as a carry piece.

We finally made a deal.....and I got my money out of it, less the cost of one magazine. Like pulling teeth, to get a fair price for one of the best pistols in it's class ever made. Before I placed the ad, I happened to ask a gun dealer what he'd give me for it..... $175 was the best they'd do. He told me that, around here, the 6906 wouldn't "go for more than $250"....and also referenced the CAI mark.

The point of the story is, location will make a big difference, as will small details, unrelated to the condition and quality of the gun in question. Everyone wants something for nothing. I'll bet that 6906 is on Gunbroker right now for $500, or something like that. My attitude has not soured on S&Ws, not at all, but it IS soured on guns in general, at this juncture.

I've got what I want and need - I like all three pistols that I now have - and that's it. I'm done.

I travel with more guns than you own, LOL!! Unlike you, I do not seem to be satisfied with just a few handguns. I like to play with something different every so often. It is an illness to me.

mbliss hit the nail on the head. For whatever reason here in the Midwest Smith autos just don't go for insane prices...yet.
My last purchase was a 3913NL for $399 with night sights!
For anybod in the area, there's a gun show Sept.24 & 25 at the Belleville, Il. Fairgrounds. I've seen at least 5-10 Smith autos there of various generations, plus a few original 59s for like $300! I'll be there hunting a 5943 and a 4046 I saw last time.

Same herecin SE Pa. Yesterdays gun show had plenty of 3rd gen Smiths at down to earth prices but no one is buying them. I even tried to sell one to several dealers who had signs reading"WE BUY GUNS". No takers not even a counter offer

Hey Perf,

I am partially to blame, so let me tell you my side of it; the buyer side.
I bought my first smith auto sometime in the late 70's. Thats when my love affair began. In the last few years as my income has risen so has my standard of a used gun. A couple of years ago I bought a 1006 CHP commemorative for around $850. That was over market without a doubt. Why? It was mint. I had to have it. I really only buy the LNIB stuff nowadays and for me the condition is so important that paying 1, 2, or $300 more in the long run means nothing to me, because I will have those guns till I die.
So, I guess you could call this an apology, for I am feeding the high price fires.

Humbly, fuzzy.

I'd like to see those prices around here. In my area 3rd Gen's are extremely rare. I don't recall ever seeing one on the shelf in a LGS. The exception is big stores like Cabela's and Gander Mountain selling very used police trade in 9mm's and .40's for outlandish prices. All the ones I've seen are over priced by about $250. Sometimes I wonder if stores don't price these guns high to encourage people to buy new tupperware...

Depends on the store and locale. One local store had a used 4506 in like-new condition with one mag for just shy of $800 (I can't find the listing on their site, now, so maybe they sold it). Another store had a 4006 for $479, also like new with one mag. Two different models, so I understand that if one is more desirable it will go for more, but that is quite a price difference.

Default Prices

Believe me I'm not happy about it, but I live in California.
Here we have a roster of acceptable guns and anything not listed is only available used and as a Private Party Transfer (PPT). *

A S&W 422 became available on GunBroker
1. Owned by an individual, so acceptable for a PPT.
2. Offered for sale within CA by the owner, lots wont.
3. Within travelling distance. Buyer (me) has to make two trips to the FFL. One for paperwork and One for pickup ten days later.

Very few guns for sale meet all of these critera..... You bet I paid a premium and forced up the price.

Got me a really nice 99% 422 for $440
Spent way too much, but not much choice in these parts.

Barry

* Yes I know about SSE in CA. Do you know anyone that will SSE a S&W 422/622/2206?

I bought a 4006 TSW with three mags, box, manuals.
Night sights glowed brightly, and the pistol showed no evidence of being fired or holstered.
I paid $530 for what was basically a new gun.
By the time I got extra mags and installed night sights, I would have that much in an older beater.

Let me see....

Speaking of only my 3rd Gen S&W semi-autos

I've owned:

3913 (2 of them)
3913NL
5906

The only one I sold was the 3913NL. I didn't like the looks of it. I keep the 5906 because it's what I carried for half my time as a LEO. The two 3913s I keep because they make for good sized, low recoil impulse, home defense and CCW holster guns.

I don't think of them as collectables. They're for shooting.

Aloha, Mark

Hi folks. Interesting discussion. I am looking at buying my first 3rd gen after following this forum for many months. A local FFL has a 4006 that I can get for $400. It comes in the original box with 3 magazines, night sights (getting dim), and the original grips. The gun shows very light holster wear. Do you think this is a good deal? I'm planning to buy it this weekend if there aren't any red flags. Then I can be a member of the cool 3rd gen club.

+1 to Perfectcircle1. That's a great deal. I paid more than that for mine. I'd be all over that deal!

Default I Think Third Generation Guns are Underpriced.....

People are waking up to the fact that the third generation Smith and Wessons are just about the finest production semi-autos ever made. Add to that that they are no longer being manufactured, and if anything they are under priced in the market for what they are. I see people paying much more for some 1911, or some plastic fantastic, or some foreign made clunker and I am amazed these people will pass a third generation Smith and Wesson up for equal or lesser price.

If you are fed up with the current prices, then I suggest you really don’t understand the quality of workmanship and materials that went into these guns.

At a shop out of state a GS has a LNIB 4006 with fixed sights $499.00 and he won't budge. I live in Ct. and he can't ship to my FF with the 11 round mag. I told him I'd swap out a 10 rounder to ship it but they still won't. He'll ship it without the mag but then won't even give me the mag at the shop. I said take off $30 since I'm not getting the mag, nope. So now it's the principle of the thing. I don't mind paying but now he's just being greedy. GRRRR I really wanted the pistol.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be picking up the 4006 tomorrow. I stopped by Cabela's today and they had PLENTY of .40 ammo and no 9mm, which is a great argument for having a new caliber in my collection.

And this is the Post of the Day.

I was just about ready to write one that would have been identical. How many times can we say this? Try to find another metal framed pistol of the same quality and you're looking at $600+ for a SIG, Beretta, or a decent 1911 or Hi-Power.

I think $500-$600+ for a LNIB or NIB gun like a 6906, 3913, 4006, 5906, etc. is a real bargain. I just saw a LNIB scandium 4040 sell for about $950 and I thought it was a steal.

Yeah, well just make sure you double check the place out first. Seems Florida allows felons (Florida Luvs Felons) to rent not purchase firearms at their local ranges and shops. I was going to go fire my Hi Power while their one time and good thing I didn't cause some fool that weekend decided to go to the range and shoot himself in the head while there.

Most of the 3gen are going up a lot of guys want plastic guns nows but the good old smiths are drying up. I went into Grice gun in PA a year ago and a mint 645 for 399 went home its gone up about 150 since then . The nice clean ones are money in the bank . There is no more of them and they go UP UP UP.

I've been lucky here in W. Pa. over the past 20 years....... except for the "crazy times"

The lgs's all seem to push Glocks, Springfield XDs.....lately; add to those the S&W M&Ps.

Used LNIB 1911s and Sigs have been "high" but Smith 3rd gen. and Beretta's...have been good buys..... when you can find them.

S&Ws seem to get no respect.................in W. Pa.

3913/14s, 6906s and 915s were dirt cheap for years.....most of mine were bought for less than $350 out the door, some with 3 mags. I even remember one 3913 was $275 with 3 mags. Even during this latest panic I picked up a "nice but not great" 915 with 2 mags for $325, OTD...... It sat dust covered in a corner of the case........

Would be in a lgs and see people, looking for a "home defense gun" pick up a 5906 and put it down saying it was "too heavy". I let a nice 5906 sit for a month and them made a "you want to get rid of that offer"..... which was snapped up by the owner.....just to move the gun!

Also it seems the LGSs around here don't know much about S&W autos......last summer I picked up a pre 39 LNIB (IIRC 1955, one of the 1600 pre 39s made) for $425. It was marked as a ....."S&W 9mm".

So how does that make him a felon? Because he rented?

Of course they are pushing them. Its hard to push a product like the steel S&W autos that are not made nor distributed anymore. With only an occasional trade in.

In my area, SE Pa, used Sigs, the good ones.... German, are only a little more then the 3rd gen Smiths. Friday one came in to a LGS. Like new, Sig 226 9mm circa 1995. Clean as can be with box and all....$499. S&W are usually cheap by about a $100. A $100 by itself is a lot but given the fact that youre already spending $400 or so and that layaway is an option that $100 aint much.

They dont get as much respect around here as others but the also dont linger around forever. I have yet to find a store that will give you a break on one. They arnt overpriced but no one is going to drop $25 just to move it.

I run into good deals on 3rd gens all the time. The problem is I don't collect so its really pointless for me to just a cumulate them regardless of price. Just recently I had to pass on 2 TSWs at $450ea.....a 5906 and 4006.

In a way people are right for passing on them, in a way. If they are like me and carry or use them constantly. New polymers hold just as many rounds if not more. Are lighter, often have better sights, easier to get mags for and most importantly parts availability. While I like my steel Smiths I dispise having to search for parts. No one has all the parts and those most commonly in stock are often the ones that dont break or arnt important. ..like original sights for instance. I used to carry my 5946 all day but you can tell a huge difference when carrying a Glock. I move around all day so switching to the Glock made my work day a lot easier.

They are great guns but the new ones are popular for a reason.

Arik,

What I meant to convey is that LGS didn't carry a lot of S&W autos even while S&W was still making them..... once the Pittsburgh Police went to Glocks, and then the State Police got rid of their Berettas ...... Smith and Beretta autos...... became scarce.. I use to gets some of my guns at a Police Supply company....some of my best buys were guns that had been in the vaults for years. Picked up a Beretta 92 type M (single stack) that had been in the vault for over 10 years. I'd bought one in about 1994 and in 2005/06 I mentioned to the owner that I should have bought a second when I had the chance......he says "OK I think I still have a couple of those in the vault!" Yep new in the box...... and he gave me 1994 pricing.........LOL

I lived in Harrisburg from 1984 to 92 and Smiths seemed more common there and the shops toward Philadelphia ..... fact is that's where I got my first couple of Smith, Beretta and Sig autos.

The rare used Sig you see around here is more likely $650 and up.........unless beaten to death.

I've tried Glocks, 3-4 times, 19s and 26s....I've never warmed to striker fired guns. I shot double action revolvers, qualifying DAO, for 20 years before buying my first auto...and Glocks don't seem to point well for me.....

After almost 20 years with a 3913,I'll take a couple of extra ozs to carry a slimmer 3913 in a Sparks Summer Special/ or Executive Companion..... if I need more than 17 rounds..... I'm in the wrong place with the wrong gun. LOL " Old dog" thing I guess

With all due respect to the Chevy Camaro, the 3rd Gen pistols are much better in almost every respect.

S&W should, however, offer occasional runs of 3rd Gens in the ones for which they still do LE contracts, the 4006CHP (yes, it is a separate model with certain parts changed), the 5946NYPD and the 4566. The latest production of these has the real Picatinny rail built in, not riveted on, and the build quality is exceedingly high.

Nope because he was a felon and allowed to rent it. No background checks on rentals. He then used the gun to kill himself which is fortunate since he could have taken out a few others before hand.

I am no fan of Florida.

Missouri does not require background checks for range rentals. I wonder how many states do.

I agree for the most part with all of the posts. What I think needs to be remembered, especially in the light of recent "crazy" pricing of nearly everything firearms related, is that 3rd gen pricing is reasonable - for what you get. They are probably the best value in these times. If you can wait a little while, most all things in the firearms world will come down in pricing again. You may even be able to purchase ammo again!

Oh, hey I wasnt arguing your point, more like other side of the coin discussing.

Its true, when you look at the 39xx and the Shield or Kahr the few extra oz wont make or break anything but when you have a 59xx thats 40oz unloaded, add to that the mag and 15-17 rounds of 115-147gr bullets you easily get close to 50oz. Something the weight of a loaded 1911. On the other hand a G19 is 20oz less fully loaded. Thats 1.25lbs less. Not an incredible amount but a lot if youre carrying every day.

My work gun (6am-6pm) is a G19. Simple, reliable, plenty of ammo and LIGHT. If its a weekend or a day where I dont have to carry for 12 hours I'll carry a 5646 or a 4566. Because on those days I know im not going to be on my feet and moving around most of the time.

Last Sunday at a gun show at Oaks Pa I tried selling my 4563TSW. NO takers....NO ONE! Dealers didn't even want to counter offer. And they buy a bit of everything. I have never had a problem selling at a gunshow.....until now.

First of all there is no law to change other than to create a law making it a requirement. I would strongly oppose creating yet another law restricting the possession and use of firearms, even the temporary possession and use.

It would be just one more step in reducing freedom and creating bureaucratic red tape. The gun does not leave the premises, and there is no transfer of ownership. Adding yet another gun law to the books would just be putting the additional costs of a background check on the range. This would just put some ranges out of business and drive up the cost of shooting even higher. It would also result in a paper trail on everyone that goes to the range.

This nearly is as bad as some of the recent proposals to ban guns!!! This is a suggestion I would expect from the far left anti-gun nuts.

If you think it would stop there then think again. Next they would be wanting background checks if you let a friend shoot one of your guns, or a family member shoot one of your guns. Then a background check just to look at a gun. Jesus!! This non-sense of trying to create laws to protect everyone from every possible thing is ludicrous and totally out of control.

I could care less about all that agenda you just threw out there. I am talking about a convicted felon having access to a firearm at a gun range to do as he sees fit with that firearm. Regardless of the amount of laws on the books for legal gun ownership, I was kind of made aware that they do allow some gun ranges to rent firearms to felons and these people lost all rights to legal firearm possession. Why should they be allowed to go to gun range and rent a firearm and then shoot it while they could not purchase one on their own?

I have changed my stance on AK and AR firearm possession as typically I do not believe them to be hunting rifles but in this day and age dealing with an obviously corrupted government driven by billionaire decision making, I can see why certain people who have the right to own them want to. However, I do not want to be at a gun range shooting firearms along side with violent criminals or rapists. Sorry do not want to do it.

Maybe we need background checks in home goods stores, you never know when someone will grab that butter knife and go off.

Then don't go to gun ranges!!! Don't try and impose your narrow views on the rest of us with more useless and wasteful laws.
