Whats YOUR Perfect S&W Semi Auto? Sights, Grips, Trigger guard, etc....
There are a lot of variations in how S&W went about making their semi-autos over the years. They all are great guns, but ive notices the type which always stops me in my tracks at the gun store are any with Rabbit-ear sights. Curved grips ,Adjustable sights, and rounded trigger guard represent the "Holy Triad" of S&W semi autos. If I see those three features I wont care about the caliber or finish, just how many days are left until payday. That said, I have been known to accept a square trigger guard model on occasion, just to broaden my horizons.
After reading another post about someone else's preferences being Novak sights, whats the "Holy Trinity" mean for you fellow aficionados ?

Mont Blanc 100
& unidentified cigar (my new favorite is Nat Sherman Hampton or Rocky Patel Royal Vintage)

Curved grips, Novak non-adjustable sights and rounded trigger guard for me! And I like the Mec-Gar 17rd 5906 mag, love the way they slanted the bottom cap to dovetail into the frontstrap.

I prefer the flat grip, adjustable sights and round trigger guard. But I like S&W 3rd Gens like I like my women; all different shapes, sizes and colors.

Round trigger guard and prefer the straight back grips. I can go either way on sights. Had adjustables on my 5906 and never had to adjust them.

Round trigger guard, straight grips, adjustable sights, black (non-MIM!) hammer and trigger, in .45ACP.

Night sights, single sided manual safety, low profile levers, bobbed hammer, with a DAO first trigger pull and SA after that.
Everything you need, nothing you don't.

For me the one Perfect S&W Semi is one I really want and don't have, and I don't think I'll ever be able to justify the price. It is the 945. There is just something about that gun that makes me want it, but at $1500+

I've seen you post pictures of this one before, and I love it! If it only had the straight grips, then it would be perfect!

That's a nice thing about then, swapping them is easy enough to do. For me, the front sight's just too low with the straight backstrap.

I think the 39 is the nicest looking Smith auto.
But my perfect Smith auto is a 5906 with Novak non-adjustable sights, round trigger guard, straight grips and 17 round Mec-Gar mags.

Craig19,
How are the 17-round Mec-Gar mags? Any good? I know they make almost everybody else's mags. I'm curious how they feed. Thanks.

I guess it would depend on which purpose its for.
If it were for going to the range I'd truly like to have a 639 with a good custom barrel, trigger job and some really good sights. I love the feel of the 39 and I'd actually do one up but I think it would be ridiculously expensive since the barrel would be a one off custom proposition.
I suppose almost as good would be a 952, should definitely have bought one of those when they were around.
For carry its a little different. I'm not sure that the M&P .45 Compact isn't a pretty darned good contender although I'm pretty enamored of the tsw 4513 I picked up recently.

It doesn't get any better than the Model 52 for me. Same grip as the 39 but in steel with a 5" barrel and boy is it accurate.

They are good, feed fine. I haven't put that many rounds through them, but haven't had a problem yet. They seem to be pretty high quality. I really like Mec-gar.

For me it would be the 4040PD with night sights (I still need to get a set for my carry Model 4040). For me its the perfect size and weight for every day carry during the summer and its fun to shoot too.

I've owned a few S&W 3rd Gen autos that I really regret selling. The first one was the greatest 9mm that I've ever owned. It was a Performance Center 5906 IDPA just like the one that Palmetto pictured above. I foolishly sold it to a member of this board for short money..I really miss that gun. I've also owned 3 Performance Center Shorty .40's that had to go away to help pay for my divorce.
Currently I am very happy with my 4013TSW with light rail..I hope that I never have to part with this one..Down the road I hope to be able to buy another 5906DPA.

Perfect (for me) to carry is my 6946...re-lamped Trijicon night sights, double action only, 5900 series 15-round magazines with adapters.
Perfect as high in cool factor would be 39-2

I would have to say without a doubt, this is my favorite S&W
auto. It shoots good and fits my hand like a glove. Seems to eat whatever I feed it. It's a real fine gun.

Small and sweet Model 469, stock and ready to go. No fancy goodies(I'm cheap lol). Love the square, serated trigger guard for old hands. Little heavier than my Kahr CM9, but holds 13 real bad 9mms.

After 23 years working with them in the Army, seems my grip, stance and muscle memory are all firmly established in the 1911 mold. Tried others, but always come home to the original:
Guess its my "centennial" 1911.
Had to dump thaty "gas pedal" ambi safety first thing, however.

A 4506-1 with the grip/butt shaped like a 52 or 639, Novak sights and trigger guard like an early no-dash 4506 or 645.

This 5906, in 356TSW and with an alloy frame, would be it. As it is, 9mm & steel frame do well.
