Default How do you S&W guys roll?

Glock guy here. I know the M&P offers an external safety and other models don't.

My question is this.... If you carry an M&P how do you roll?

No external safety model hot ready to go?

No external safety W/O one in the pipe)

External safety locked up with one in the chamber.

Your thoughts?

For me it just depends on the potential need for engagement. If I'm going into what I anticipate is a hostile enviorment (which I try to avoid if at all possible) then my 1911 is locked an loaded.

I'm an S&W "Revolver" Man, but in semi-autos I go with Colt 1911s and Glocks.

No external safety and hot. It's no less safe than a double action revolver, particularly if your holster covers the trigger guard.

I keep a lot of different suits (guns) for different occasions, and I always keep good friends and stay out of bad places.

Revolver/auto.....whatever fits the bill for the task at hand.

With my M&P9 FS, no safety on the gun, one in the pipe. With my 3rd gens or my Shield, one in the pipe, safety off.

None of my M&P's have safeties, they all are carried loaded and ready. My BG380 has a safety that has never been used.

My personal preference is for any of my guns to be loaded and ready to fire by aiming and pressing the trigger with no other action required.

My 442 was my first carry gun, and since it does this naturally, I based the rest of my collections over the years on this simple action.

My striker-fired SW40F and the DAO 3953 also qualify for this mode.

For the Model 59 that I bought sometime later, I decock it and leave the lever in the "OFF" position.

So, all are loaded and need only depend on a disciplined trigger finger to remain 'safe' until needed, even though there may be other 'safeties' built in.

Exceptions:
At the range, I place lever on the 59 and my Ruger .22's into SAFE when not actually shooting.

I'm with Jim. I prefer DAO and striker-fired NMS guns. While I will train with other manual of arms to remain familiar, I like to stick with what is tried and true when it comes to my carry guns.

My M&P's have no safety and my 4003 is carried safety off. All have one in the chamber when carried.

I carry the 3rd gen metal DA/SA guns.

Most of the time: loaded chamber, hammer down, safety off.

Some of the time: loaded chamber, hammer down, safety/decocker down. (safety on)

"How do you S&W guys roll"? With girls.

As for carry, it depends on what is in the holster. Revolver, every hole filled and ready to go. DAO, one in the chamber, again, ready to go. Safety/decocker, one in the chamber, decocked/safety on.

Default How I roll?

If it has a safety I use it. If it does not I don't. My experience for most of my life was with the M9/92FS. So sweeping a safety is second nature. I also used a M9/92FS for IDPA or a S&W 5906/6906. My times for non safety or with safety guns were never that far apart. This was comparing the with safety autos(Berettas) to Sig P228 and Sig P226 that I used for IDPA. I guess under stress having no safety would be better. But like anything else, you can train past any deficiency.

A firearm is meant to be carried ready to fire. If it is not ready to fire what good is it. I am a revolver guy, my revolver is loaded 6 rds ready to go. If I carry a semiauto, I carry round chambered and no safety...

It's a slang term. "That's just how I roll, man." Which means..."that's how I choose to do things." But if you really want to be hip you could say...

"I was like, how do you S&W guys roll and they were like "dude, we carry with a round in the chamber" and I was like " dude, you should get a Glock."

Originaly carried a S&W 15 on duty, (back in the day, so to speak) then the dept transitioned to Glock 19's. After 20 years of that I wasn't big on safeties. Since owning a few 1911's it's cocked and locked for them. Now it's a S&W 1911SC cocked and locked or a M&P Shield, safety off. The 1911 seems natural to clear the safety while drawing with the thumb sweep. The Shield, not so much. As always the safety has to be in the head.

Best at strong side C-to-C in my whitewater kayak, usually layback sweep Greenland style in my sea kayak.

My SP101 doesn't seem to mind either way. It just goes along for the ride and gets a good rinse under warm water when we get home.

Never tried it with an M&P.

Currently I would not concealed carry a pistol with an external hammer or safeties. I always carry with a round in the chamber.

I dont own too many autos, but the ones I do that have safeties, I have one in the chamber with safety on (1911), its second habit to me at this point, but it's how I learned. I am looking to get a couple smith autos like a 5906 and 4506 at some point, I imagine I would carry them the same way. My main carry weapon is a glock 23 and I am used to it not having a real safety.

You cant really convince me an external safety is a detriment if you know how to use it, especailly one thats a thumb safety, you set as you draw. But I guess its personal preference.

Most of the time I carry either a 686+ or a M10 revolver. When I carry a semi-auto, it's a 1911 cocked and locked.

Depends. When I pack my Browning HP I carry it on half cock chamber loaded. If things look like they are getting crowded and a gun grab is possible, I simply slip the safety on. If someone does get the BHP(I am not as young and strong as I once was) I want to see then try to figure out how to shoot the thing, while they are so engaged I have my 940 in a left front pocket for amusement.
Recently my agency has gone to the M&P full size .357 with thumb safety. Carry pretty much the same way locked an loaded. When the weapon comes out the safety comes off-always, and the real safety takes over. I know that if I want to stay for a couple more pension points I will probably have the switch to the M&P, but it really is a very good weapon. The 940 will stay however, or maybe my 632 Pro.

Default How fast can you get into action with it?

You are the first and only person I have herd of carrying at half cock. If I recall correctly some cavalry troops carried half cock. Way before my time. I have carried a P 38 round in chamber safety on or had it on a bed stand in that condition in the past.
I carry a 640 in my left front pocket also for the same reasons.
I have gained more interest in revolvers lately. I just got weary of the plastic "tools."
If you are concerned about a grab there are plenty of retention holsters available. I have never used one and am sure a lot of practice would be involved.
I no longer open carry, I have no reason to advertise in public.
Hunting and in the woods is a bit different though.
When I first got into Glocks and not many good holsters were available I had a soft suede IWB and carried empty chamber. Since I went to Milt Sparks Summer Special with its molded form and open mouth for re-holster it is round in the pipe. My HP and 1911 are condition one.
Be safe and aim true.

Bull
