Default The 5906 and 6906 from CDNN came tonight

They look in excellent condition, like they sat in boxes in an armory somewhere. I did not see any scratches or holster wear.
As soon as I have some time to take them apart and clean them I will. Again I thank the board member who told me about CDNNs sale on them. I really like both. Ye Gods, I'll have a tough time knowing which to pack but it probably will be the smaller of the two. Do all the 6906s have bobbed hammers?
I can see it's DAO first shot but the trigger pull is not too bad. Now I'd better look for a 3913.
Just for comparison, I think the CZ75B in polished stainless is perhaps the most beautiful gun ever produced; it's lines are fluid and graceful. I'm a CZ fan too. I put cocobolo grips on mine and night sights and had a trigger job done. I'm not going to carry that one, she's a safe queen.

Default 6906

I just ordered a 6906. If it is as nice as yours I think a 5906 will be in the future.

Take it out and run some rounds thru it before you start carrying........I got a 6906 from CDNN a coupla weeks ago and its having cycling issues.....its in great condition and is off to S&W next week for repair since even though CDNN would exchange it I would have to go thru the whole paperwork process again along with ANOTHER $50 transfer fee so S&W it is.....I also had/still have an ex LE 5906 that had some minor issues also but S&W took care of that and I love that gun....

"Hand cycle?"
No!
Nein!
NYET!

No weapon graces my hip unless its had , bare minimum in odd circumstances when a range trip is not immediately possible, two flawless magazines of ammo run through it.That isn't even a good test, but it beats "hand cycling".

That lesson was taught to me by the last 5906 I ordered. The gun hand cycled snap caps and live ammo just fine, and I was really , really, REALLY tempted to carry it on the spot without live fire first. I loaded a magazine with practice ammo, went to a very isolated field....and had a three-point jam the first time I shot it.

Oh, the gun hand cycled rounds all day and its a S&W 3rd Gen. But it three-point jammed out the box! Had that been a life or death situation you guys would be reading about me in the Obituaries.

No firearm I possess, new or used, is carried without being live fired.I don't care if Gaston Glock himself inspected it first.

If sending it to the factory for repair, you DO NOT HAVE TO TAKE IT TO AN FFL to send it; just mail it to them yourself. Insure it. They mail it directly back to you.

Motion seconded. In many states you have to re-accomplish a background check upon receipt of your own weapon if an FFL receives it in the course of a repair.

ALMOST correct. You, being a non-FFL holder can send it back to ANY repair facility that is licensed (FFL) to do repairs and they can send it back directly to you.

You, being a non-FFL holder CAN NOT MAIL it to a repair facility though the USPS, you must use a common carrier (UPS, FDX...). You, being a non-FFL can only MAIL a LONG GUN through the USPS.

Declare what is in the box and buy the insurance. If you ship a firearm through UPS, FDX... without declaring it is a firearm and it's lost or damaged in transit the shipper WILL refuse the claim for loss/damage.

The penalties for mailing a handgun through the USPS without the shipper and receiver being FFL holders are severe.

"Hand cycle"? I would never suggest hand cycling as a testbed before carrying...that would just be plain....well....stupid. Run rounds thru it by shooting it....I suggest at least 100 (thats my number) but its your call.

As for the S&W return...they send you a shipping label and I will be mailing it fedex as per instructions from Smith.....they already insure all APPROVED returns and I have to inform Fedex that the box contains a firearm....Smith in turn will mail it directly back to me...no FFL involved or needed..

I have seen at least one variant that came from the factory with a bobbed hammer. It had an aluminum frame. Sorry, I can't remember the number.

New from the factory, S&W 3rd gen semiautos came with 2 magazines. As did the 1st and 2nd gen semiautos, as well

Wonder it the cycling issue is simply the need for a new recoil spring? I suspect they've been sitting in the box for quite some time.

nope, cycling issue isnt springs....I changed the entire mag and recoil spring from my 669 and it still does it so I'll let Smith fix it rather than tinker with it...

The 5906 does not have a bobbed hammer. It's all stainless. The select guns are generally in very good shape, at least 94% or better. The 6906 is the compact version of the 5906 and has a stainless slide and alloy frame and has a bobbed hammer. I bought one recently from CDNN and it's not the select deal but it's easily 94% or better. Mine came with a LEO marked 12 round magazine. They are a steal for sure.

Got the 6906 and took it out Thursday. A little disappointing as it did not shoot nearly as well as the 5906 I had. I need to take it apart and tweak it a little. Seems quite stiff with the trigger. On the other hand, not bad for a third generation Smith way under $400!

I bought a 5906 in Jan 1993 straight from factory, came with one magazine, pre-ban. Love this firearm - I was in the Army when I got it, and had no place to store it when I went overseas to Korea, so I had it added to my orders so I could carry it as my side-arm while there. I loved carrying her as a sidearm in the field, but she's a bit "thick" to carry concealed, imo.

I've put tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of rounds through her the past 19 years, cleaning meticulously after each firing, and light oil on the action/rails and recoil spring once a month whether fired or not, and the only time I have issues with jams are with cheap ammo or reloads.

Is it possible the 3-point jams come from a messed-up spring in the magazine? Sometimes the mags get stored with rounds in them for years at a time (sitting in someone's nightstand or glovebox untouched), and form a "spring-memory". Just a guess, but it may save some $$ if you try a "new" mag before shipping her back to the factory.

Either way, enjoy the 5906...she's a workhorse, and an under-rated one at that!

On my 5906, the magazine was replaced with a brand new one, and the recoil spring was changed out. Still three point jammed 3 times out of 73 rounds fired.

I have no way to confirm this, but I would bet the previous users did "Lethal Weapon" tactic of sticking a round in the pipe and sending the slide forward on the chambered case. Thus, damaging the extractor over time to the point it starts failing. Nothing against the old gun, its made out of metal and parts like everything else, and is thus not infallible.
