S&W 39 and 39-2 Barrel Markings
On mine, the 9mm marking is on the 39-2 guns. The 9mm ctg. marking is on my original 39's (no dash). Are you sure the barrels haven't been replaced?
Neither should have been packed in cosmoline.

The No Dash Model 39's had the chambers marked as 9mm ctg. When S&W made the change over to the Model 39-2 (around SN: A120XXX) the only certain change was the smaller extractor. Over time the 39-2 phased out other features of the No Dash 39. The hole in the hammer, the tighter twist rate, the 9mm ctg marking and the older style barrel bushing being the most noticeable ones. Your SN is early enough the 9mm ctg marking is appropriate. You also probably have a hole in your hammer, the higher twist rate barrel and the older style barrel bushing I mentioned earlier.
Personally I find the older no dash 39's and the 39-2's to be more accurate. Also, the finish was better in the older guns. I like any Model 39 I can get my hands on, but the older ones are special.

Just a quick note, the TV show HANDGUNS reviews the 39 this week.

The SN puts them as around 1971. The tricky part about the early production 39-2's are that the parts from no-dash 39's and the newer parts for the 39-2's were just mixed in the parts bins. You may end up with the newer style hammer and an older style barrel in the same gun. They all shoot great, there are just different combinations of extractors, hammers, barrels, and barrel bushings.

I just checked the Sportsman Channel and it's not on this week. Any other Chanel carry it?
