New to me 52-1
I just purchased a 52-1 in at least 98% condition with 2 extra magazines. It was made around 1965 per the serial#56***. I am not familiar with these guns but it caught my eye. I think I got a good deal on it so I purchased the gun. I will probably never shoot the gun and keep it as an investment. This is the 1st one I have ever seen in person and it is a very nice looking pistol. I am happy.

The 52s are great guns and super accurate. You should get a box of wadcutters and see what she'll do. Here's my 52-2 in the original box with mags, bushing wrench and accessory steel weight.

Model 52's are made to shoot. Don't let it languish in a safe. You will love it, once you've fired it.

I have a new 52-2 coming myself.
We differ in that I am going to shoot the heck out of mine.
Going to use it for the center fire portion of bullseye matches.
Been wanting one for a few years now and decided what the heck, get it and enjoy it.

I may have to try her out, at least once. It is in such nice shape I hate to shoot it. I gave 636.00 out the door. Is that a fair price for a 98% gun.

If you got a 98% 52-1 for $636 bucks, then whoever sold it didn't know what he had...

That is a great pistol that performs very well. They are not common anymore and those of us that own them, have a lot of respect for it. That was also a great buy.

$636??? I sold my 52-2 8 years ago for $850 in that kind of condition. I did include 6 magazines with it for that price.

I got the gun 2 extra magazines and a set of target grips. I do not like the looks of the target grips on the gun and I will never use them. I am not sure who made them, they are smooth with no checkering. I feel very good about the price for the quality of gun i received. I did not realize at the time of purchase how desireable these guns are.

I have seen those barrel weights before and don't really understand their purpose, can some one explain? The gun has such a light recoil I don't see any need to try and improve it. What am I missing? And yes, you stole it. You should turn yourself in before the police show up.

The weight just changes the balance and makes it more muzzle heavy. Some shooters really prefer the weight installed and say it helps follow through.

I've seen those for $150 to $200. If I paid that much I'd swear by it too. Just don't get it. The (minimal) recoil feels like it is comes straight back, no lift at all.

Check Gunbroker or the e-XXX place there are reproduction weights available for $75 if you want to try a set and they are just as good if not better quality than the original weight that are collectable. I bought a set of the reproduction weights and they do make a difference in the handling and recoil when shooting bullseye. I have a post somewhere if you search that gives my impression on the quality of the reproduction weights wouldn't sell mine for the price of originals.

Gunbroker item # 291229862 these are exactly like the Smith & Wesson weights same 2 pieces and screws as the originals. Not just a solid single weight and they are extremly well made!

Just sold a 52-1 with one magazine & no extra's, similar condition- $750. (mags are $40- $50)
You should shoot it once to fully appreciate it.

If you shoot it once you will shoot it many more times.
I decided to buy a complete reload set up for an S1050 because of this gun. Now I have 3,000 plus .38 wadcutters in my ammo locker.

Agreed - recoil is minimal and the weight is not needed to manage recoil .
Since it gives the pistol more heft it helps a lot in maintaining sight alignment .
