Default $425 for 5906... good price?

I was at my LGS yesterday, and he has a 5906 for $425. This is the older model (I believe) with the square trigger guard and large rear adjustable site (not Novak). This pistol is in excellent, near mint condition. The finish is very very nice, and the site and safety dots are all bright and clean. The red safety dots are very red and clean. No scratches or wear. It comes with the original box, manual and clips, all of which are near mint condition. It even has the original? beige colored wrapping paper. Also included is a black leather holster which also looks very nice and shiny. I'd guess this Smith was boxed and closeted when not used, and appears to have very minimal usage, unless of course it underwent an expensive restoration. What are your thoughts on the asking price? Thanks.

EDIT - Here's a gun broker listing that closely resembles what I am describing above:
Like new Smith & Wesson 5906 9mm 2 mags MINT! : Semi Auto Pistols at GunBroker.com
This isn't the 5906 I am looking at, but similar shape.

You can buy shooter 5906's in the low 300's. If you are going to shoot it all the time, that might be the way to go. However, if it's going to be part of your collection and shot occasionally, that's a pretty good price for a near mint 5906. I'd offer him $400 OTD, I bet he'll take it.

That is a very good deal even for a "shooter". I have two of the same guns. Both with square trigger guards and the fixed sights.

I bought one new from a LGS in the '90's, and I recently bought one LNIB/mint on an on-line site for $375 which I thought was a real steal, and in fact I think I just timed it right.

Here's the deal, I would have easily paid $425-$450 for a LNIB/mint model. I have seen them sell for $400-$600 LNIB/NIB.

You can't buy any type of similar new gun that is slightly used, let's say a SIG or Beretta, with an alloy frame or SS frame and SS slide for less than $500. I personally don't want to buy someone else's troubles, a gun with extremely high round count, or a LEO trade in, unless I can see it and fire it. IT is worth an extra $100 to me to be able to buy a mint/LNIB model.

Long story short, I would jump on it.

If the 5906 looks really nice that price is still a bargain for the quality of the pistol. Yes, LE trade-ins can be found for around $300-350, but add shipping & FFL fees and you are closer. Plus it will have holster wear and who knows how it functions.
Negotiate the best deal you can on it, and be happy you found a very nice one!

Buy it! I saw 2 mint ones at scheels a big sporting good store where I am. I screwed around thinking I could find one cheaper as many are in CNN for $350 ish. Both were gone within A week when they got them. They were selling them for $500. These looked like new. Still A bargain, I think they were around $550 new back in 1990.

So I went back to LGS during lunch to look again. Here's my question and concern. I noticed some play in the slide to frame fit. If I put my thumb against dust hood, and push down with index & middle fingers on the muzzle end of slide, it moves up and down a little bit. Maybe 1/32" to 1/16" of an inch? I thought that was interesting. Other than that, it looks very nice, as well as box and manual, 2 clips, wrapping paper, holster, etc. What are your thoughts? What would be a dead giveaway of high round count? Thanks again.

I usually get a feel for round count by how polished the barrel is at the points where it wears against the slide. If you can field strip the weapon, you an also inspect the wear points between the slide and frame.
The 5906 is a solid gun, even a beat to **** LEO turn-in will serve you well, but a minty specimen is a sight to behold. I have two 5906's, and I would have a tough time passing up a shiny like new one for $425 out the door.

Man what a small world. I just got through looking at a mint 5906 at my LGS got $425.00. It had to be the nicest used handgun I have ever looked at. I would really like to find a 3913, but this is so tempting.

The one I sold a few years ago looked mint, it was a worn out whore though. Back in the day they were known to have excessive wear due to the stainless slide on the stainless frame. If I were actually going to buy one I would shoot it first, there were plenty that got worn out and that's one of the reasons they fell out of popularity. A lot of guys fairly new to guns can't remember that.

Guitarguy:

I just responded to your pm prior to seeing this post.

I don't think 1/32" play up and down *and side to side) at the muzzle is anything at all other than normal tolerances.

I don't have my 5906 with me, but am carrying a 4014 (same basic gun, but a compact, alloy framed, all blackened .40 S&W).

I just took it out and tried it with and without a loaded magazine in it, and there is easily a 1/32" play in all four directions at the muzzle (there kind of has to be).

Inspect the frame rails, but it sounds fine to me.

One of mine I bought new has a fairly high round count (the other one has less than 200 through it). There should not be a lot of stainless/stainless wear (or for that matter stainless/alloy frame wear on the alloy models) if you use a quality grease on the slides. I particularly like RIG +P for stainless guns, although regular RIG is extremely good if that is all you can find.

The 4014 has had about 500 rounds through it. They all have some play in the slide area, even brand new.

About 2 years ago I found one at a gunshow, unfired, NIB round trigger guard with fixed sights that I bought for $420 OTD and was thrilled at that price. $425 for the pistol that you describe does not sound out of line to me.

I paid $425 from a forum member in excellent condition but no box. ..it had seen very little use.. 3 months ago I live in NE Ohio. he was from Il or IN.
If it's a LEO trade in you should be able to do better.
FYI

Locally 6906's and 5906's have been popping up like crazy in my LGS's, so I think what is happening is these places are buying them from CDNN and reselling them...

They were never around locally until recently, now every shop has them.

Nice. Good pick up. In case you were wondering, the Hogue wood grips that fit your 5906 are pretty beefy. They are smooth and easy to install, but they were too big for my comfort.

Thanks! I must admit, I do like the look of wood grips.

guitar guy:

Here's a couple of photos of my 5906 and 4014 as per the pm's we sent.

The brown & black holster with the 4014 is the one that Tim Thurner of TT Gunleather made for me.

Again, congrats on a good find and acquisition.

Tim
