1006 Fixer Upper w pics
Bought a Sig 220 from a local pawn shop last week, got a great deal too.
While chewing the fat, Smith & Wesson came up and I mentioned that I was a 10mm fan, but few were around these days.
He went into the back, rummage through an old safe, and came back with a 1006 in a plastic bag marked "Needs Repaired"
I asked permission to field strip it, turns out the only obviously problem is the sideplate has one leg broken off, pretty common.
He had two white follower mags but no box, and a full box of CorBon HP's.
I asked if he would consider selling it as-is. Apparently it had been in the safe for years.
He said he didnt feel like sending it back to Smith, and would take what he had in it to get it off the books.
$350 plus tax = $371
Now to find a $10 sideplate!

I am so jealous. Great find and a bargain. Let us know how it shoots. Uh, would you take $372.00 for it?

When I tried to get a side plate for my 4506, Smith said they were no longer available. I think the 1006 uses the same one, hopefully you can find one.

Try "Guns and Gun parts"
They have many, many S&W parts, being the close proximity to the factory.

Nice deal.
A little odd that nit's the front leg that got snapped off. It's usually the back leg of the sideplate that gets tweaked and snapped off (as it usually happens when the grips are being shoved on/up and the front left edge snags underneath the plate, transferring the force against the back leg, which is trapped "behind" the sear pin and can't be lifted forward). Of course, I've seen some folks use an excessive amount of force, or an "inopportune" method, when installing a sideplate from time to time. Snapping off a piece of stamped steel takes some effort at achieving "masterful inattention", though.
I notice it appears the gun has the old style ejector/mag depressor. Since you've got to remove & replace the sideplate, you might as well replace the ejector with the newer design (since the ejector comes out for the sideplate replacement). If you're not familiar with them, the revised ejector has a slightly longer tip (for faster ejection, especially with hotter loads), and the sharp corner angle under the tip was replaced with a curve (helping reduce the potential for a stress riser to occur at the corner, which is where the tips could sometimes break off after a lot of use.
The ejector may be either plain stainless or black finish, depending on what they've ordered from their vendors (like the sideplates and some other small parts & assemblies).
This picture shows the old ejector on the bottom and the new style on the top. The change from corner to curve is subtle, but significant, and the longer tip is a good thing.
BTW, I got your PM, but I'm getting low on some parts until I order more of them.

Thanks everyone , found one
Has anyone done the swap out?
Do you disassemble all the components in the frame ,
Or can you run a punch or pin in from the backside and then push it back out with the new assembly?
Can't see how someone would break this piece
I've owned a dozen or more 3rd gens and never broke one, and I can break an anvil with a screwdriver some days !

Coin toss.
That sort of breakage is typically NOT something that happens unless someone has the grips off the gun. Not something that typically happens during the normal use of the gun. Granted, after a lot of use the sideplate's pin might have the staking become loose, and then they'd usually consider it a warranty repair, but that's another "problem" and is different than someone cranking on a sideplate and bending/snapping off one of the prongs.
They might cover it as a warranty repair for the original owner, if the gun was made after they'd started extending the limited lifetime warranty to private purchasers (early-to-middle 90's?), or if it was a LE trade-in and had been sold with a new warranty. Just depends.

Two 10mm steals on the same day, even though this thread is a bit old. My question to myself is-Why can't we find these kinds of deals?
