S&W 52-2 .38 WADCUTTER OR . 38 SUPER???
Local seller has this 52-2 for sale. States it is a .38 Super??? Could not find anything pertaining to a .38 Super. Only a .38 wadcutter. Wants $1149.00 and comes with the original box. I have a 39-2 transitional and like that format... Seems to be the same frame as the 39-2. Just was wondering if this was a fair deal. Check out the pics. Thanks to all. Happy Father's Day.....

A 52-2 I saw for sale a couple years ago at a shop in Scottsdale was $1200.00+tax, IIRC. They also had a 52, no dash, for a thousand. That's not a .38 Super unless it has been rebarreled. It is a .38 Spcl. Wadcutter only, 5-shot magazines, etc.
Now I did see an older gentleman at the Black Canyon range years ago shooting .38 Super from his 52. He showed me what he was doing, the Super's semi-rim headspaced adequately, that the Super ammunition fit in the .38 WC magazines, etc. I don't recall seeing any malfunctions. I think some people wouldn't believe that, but I was there...

Perhaps it's a .38 AMU. That's a .38 Special with a .38 Super semi-rim.

52-2
a friend Just picked up one on GB for $850.00, box papers etc. Unfired.
This is a rare find, typically you will be spending from $1000.00, to what ever your threshold of pain is.
I prefer the finish of the lower A100000 series up to A300000. Just my preference. I have seen these selling as mentioned up to $1500.00.
His price to me is fair but you should be patient, and keep watch, there are some shooters out there for far less. If you plan to shoot the gun, there is no sense in worrying about the box. Also the bushing wrench should never be used, unless someone over tightened the bushing.
You will find the Barrel is stamped 38 Mid Range in the breach opening of the slide. If it is an AMU, grab it, but I believe the serial number is too high, without looking. The AMU is a very rare gun. Also if you E-mail me, I will forward you an article on the model 52 from Gil Hebbard, very interesting reading, to any who desire it.

The model 52-2 is a 38 Special Wadcutter only gun. They were all built via the custom shop and have the best out of the box trigger of any semi-auto ever marketed. It is possible to load 38 Super brass with a round nose bullet as long as it will fit and feed from the magazine, and it will function, but the gun is not built to take the kind of pressures the 38 super can be loaded to. The 52-2 is strictly a target gun and you defeat the purpose of that if you try and feed it ammo not designed for it. You gain nothing, I know I tried it and the WC ammo is far more accurate than any round-nose you can get to work.

The "seller" knows NOT about what he speaks....
However, the S&W 52 is one great target gun.....you have to try to miss!!!
That price is in the right ballpark.........IF you are looking for a handgun what fires ONLY Midrange Wadcutters......

Might be a touch high in my opinion. Gun is worth $900 range in my neck of the woods. If the box is a 2 piece with the cutout that is worth $125ish. The 1 piece "fold tops" are significantly less than that.
I got both my 52-2s on GB both shipped less than $850. One with the box, 1 without. They are out there if you can wait for the right chance.

I picked this one up a few years ago for $760 with box and two mags. I added the weight later.
Two piece steel weight:
Its designed for these and it shoots like a laser:

It would have been more threatening if Dr. Evil attached 52-2's to the heads of sharks.
"Sharks with ******* 52-2's on their heads" - totally bada**.

I let one get by me for 500 about six years ago. It had the box, weights and paper work. He was going to let his bullet mold go with it. Guess you live and learn. I shot the gun a lot and it was a shooter. I did buy his Colt SF vi which I didn't need.

52-2
I am lucky enough to have a 52 no dash , 52-1 and 52-2.
The no dash being the nicest condition one I have.
I also had a 52-2 with old style box that I paid $1100.00 on GB about 2 years ago because it looked like it came out of a time warp, it had not even been handled much less fired, I traded that one on this forum.
Anyway, as H Richard said they have the finest triggers I have ever experienced, everyone I have ever had the pleasure of handling.
I shoot my two newer ones all the time, the no dash is too nice, I leave it alone in my safe.
As far as the price, what else can you get in a fine target auto for around a thousand ?
Any nicer 1911 is at least that kind of money.
I think they are well worth what people are asking, they made them a long time but never in high volume.
The triggers are much nicer then either my 945 or my 952 !!
