I got nothing on a Smith & Wesson Model 658.

I think it is a 669 but the the damn receipt says the model is 9 mm I have not picked up gun yet. But the sn is

I've bought some guns on the spur of the moment and had to take them home and do research on them to find out what I had and whether or not I got a good deal. Guns (and women) will do that to you. I've taken women home and had to do research on them to find out what I had as well. Man I miss doing that kind of research.

I don't understand why people put the serial #'s of their guns on the internet?

It isn't quite the problem that it used to be before the sales of guns were as well documented. If I tried to claim that his gun was really mine and that it was stolen, then all the authorities would have to do is check with the store's paperwork where it was bought. But if it was an older gun or the individual couldn't locate the person he had bought it from then he might have a problem.

Imagine being stopped late one night while packing a gun that you had posted the serial number on the internet. The officer asks if there are any weapons in the car. "Yes officer, I have this gun that I've owned for years". The officer says "I'll need to check the serial number please." The gun is handed over and the officer checks it in his database.

Oops, I took the serial number that was posted on the internet and reported it as stolen from my car last month, right after you posted it on the internet. Now, I'd like to be a fly on the wall while you try to talk yourself out of being arrested for possession of a stolen gun. I wonder if you have any paperwork with you in your car that shows you are the rightful owner of said gun. I kind of doubt it. Looks like we have a problem Houston!!!!

Yes...it could happen....it's just plain silly.....to put it lightly.

For the most part it is paranoia.

If the Government wants your firearms they do not need an internet forum to track the purchase.

Criminals have no reason to report a legally owned firearm as stolen. Even if that does happen, the 4473 and bound book of your FFL will prove that its legally yours, so the charges won't stick.

The bound book will only show that it was yours at one time.

In today's world there are certainly more important things to spend time worrying about!!

But it is still safer to put an "X" on two in the on-line serial number just to placate other folks and to prevent ulcers.:rolleyes:

Congrats on your new pistol, nitestalker700. And as to the serial number issue, I never post or show pics of the serial numbers of my guns. Millions of people are on the internet every day, some of them are just looking to create mischief. Some of my guns were not bought from a dealer, so I have no proof they are mine. I'm not giving them any ammo against me.

Yes I made a mistake. Not thinking at the time. Documents, and Provenance. in every box.

I have sometimes used X's and sometimes not when showing guns I have purchased. Starting today mine will only appear with a partial S/N. This should be in a STICKY on one of the READ THIS FIRST posts when we join the forum. It's very good info and to a newbie, in the very lesast it could save him having to be scolded in a post BUT far more importantly from being arrested for stolen property.

Did anone ever decide what was bought? If it was a 659, all I can say is you bought a real BRICK! Too heavy for me, and mine shot way left and high. Put that thing up and went back to my 39-2's.

I got a good shooter, and it is a model 5943 DAO It has a good trigger pull At one time I used a 639, Always liked it.

I have a 659 that shoots great. Don't let one bad review sway you. You paid about right for it too. I love mine.. It's the only 2nd gen I own.
