Default Brand new M&P22 Pistol

Howdy! Yesterday I purchased my first pistol, a M&P22... absolutely love it!

However right after purchasing, I took it to the range and shot 200 rounds, and on 3 clips, after I dropped down the slide, the bullet would feed too far and would stove pipe. It happened 3 times, and it was always the first cartridge in the magazine.

I was with my brother and he said it was "operator error", but I'm not sure what I could be doing wrong

Any ideas?

No idea, I have no problem like that with my M&P22. You may get more response if you put this question in the M&P Pistol forum. Lots of M&P 22 owners there.

The first round sticking straight up is from inserting the magazine a little too aggressively. I catch myself doing it all the time and have to remember to slow down and not slam it home.

BTW welcome to the forum and congrats on the new pistol.

I have three mags that do the same thing. Some worse than others with the original being the worst. Each are 12 round mags and when slapped into position the first round will push up through the lips just a bit. Bullet stays in the correct position just raised through. When the slide is released either by hand or with the slide release the nose of the bullet is just high enough to be forced upward into a stovepipe. I want to take a few measurements before calling S&W. Otherwise the gun shoots great with bulk ammo or anything else I put in.

I bought while a month ago and have to agree what a great pistol S&W has developed. My only suggestion is to try CCI mini-mag. The plated bullet really, and I do mean really, helps the seating. I understand that after a few thousand (million) rounds, it will feed and fire the Wally World bulk ****, but until then try the CCI ammo.

I have run both plated and non plated and several brands from CCI Mini mag on down to bulk packs and there is no difference. It is not a feed issue from the normal bullet position in the mag. Here it is the bullet rises to far though the lips of the magazine on the first round when the magazine is inserted with normal speed/pressure.

With the slide open it is obvious when it happens. You can reach in with a finger tip and push it back into position. If this were just a casual target gun I would not be to concerned. Since this gun is featured as a "practice gun" for the 9mm or 40 cal it should not need to be babied on a reload.

As I said I love the gun and it shoots any ammo without a problem it's just the magazine issue for training I am concerned about.

I just returned from the initial firing of my M&P22.
If you SLAM the magazine in, you will cause a misfeed; just put it in. There is no need to SLAM magazines in, even a 9mm in a match just needs a firm steady push.
I noticed a few burrs on the magazines and am now going to take them apart for a deburr and polish.
The pistol fired Federal Pistol Match .22 with no problems.

I adjusted the sights and got one ragged hole at 5 yds, then shot about 100 rounds at the steel plates at 20 yds.

It seems easy to let the front sight drift up and shoot a tad high, but if I keep the front dot flattened against the bottom of the rear notch, it will hit a steel plate at 20 yds every shot.

Added: While I had the magazines apart, I measured the lip spacing, and found both of mine within spec. There was minor roughness near the back of the lips and in the slider slot, which I stoned out.
I noticed after reassembly that it is easy to leave the 12th round slightly forward, which causes it to be struck during loading.

Suggestions: 1. Check the lip smoothness and spacing, and correct as necessary.
2. Take care that the 12th round is fully rearward in the magazine.

I agree but slamming is not the cause. Normal speed and pressure of a reload will cause the issue.
