An all steel version of the 39. Very desirable auto. Good luck!

I have not priced one in a while. Box,extra magazine, would increase value. And then the condition, of course.

Value
The condition is 95% with original wood grips, 3 magazines, original instructions but no box.
I've tried searching the forum and could not find any information.
Thanks for the help so far.

The all steel 539 isnt as common as the aluminum frame 439 version , The one to look out for is the all steel 39 no dash which can reach $2000,
A clean 539 as described probably could reach $500 to $600 to the right buyer with a reserve auction ,
A private sale as you descibed I would suggest offering $300 to $400 range tops unless your coompleting a collection in which case they dont op up too often .
On a side note I paid $300 for one localy about 2 years ago in high condition.

I just searched Gunbrokers completed auctions and the price is all over the place 400 to 780 . I know if I had a chance at one I would easily pay up to 500 as described.

I have a Mod.539 that I bought about 4 years ago from a local dealer who took it in trade at a gun show.
As someone else said it is basically an all steel Mod.39,but has a rear sight that is enclosed on both sides with what I refer to jokingly as fender skirts.
I'm not really a fan of this sight, but the slide is cut for this sight and I don't know that they can be changed without spending too much money.Probably best to keep it original anyway.
I actually shoot this gun a lot and it remains one of my favorites for movement and point shooting. It feeds all the modern hollowpoints that I have tried. It currently stays on standby as a backup house pistol.
Magazines for the 39 are fine, all these are difficult to find. I had to advertize on line to find extras as my pistol only had two mags with it. It was apparently never shot or carried much, and the only blue wear is a small area on the port side of the slide near the muzzle.
This is a great feeling, great shooting pistol, that will give any of the newer ones a run for the money. Mine has been extremely reliable for the four years I've owned it. I just checked and don't have a photo available but will try to take one and post it. I recommend the Mod.39-2,439,539,and 639. I gladly paid $450 plus tax for mine 4 years ago and still think I got the best end of the deal.

The sights are definately interesting not user friendly in low light conditions and the fender skirt analogy is right on.
Hoping to get it to the range sometime next week.

Congrats, the 539 was a one year gun only about 8000 were made. That makes it not so rare but uncommon . Good find and I am envious , I'm not a collector but I'm always on the look out for a 539 at a fair price. I just like all steel guns for shooting plus they have more soul than any ones plastic guns. Yes I do have Glocks, a Walther p99 an XD and a PX4, sorry M&P you were just a bit late to the poly game. Good luck with that sweet 539.

I find the word rare amusing, every guy with an old corvette will tell you how rare his is. The 539 was made for 3 years (80/83) the 639 for 4 years (84/88) and the 439 for 9 years (79/88). Yet how many 439s do you see for sale?

If the three magazines are correct vintage for the gun, you can add $100 to the value of the gun.
S&W will sell you a new-production mag for the 39 series - which functions 100% - but is designed to fit all manner of 39 series guns. The new-production mags have stainless bodies, and they hang out the bottom of the early 39-series guns in an unappealing way.

I would pay $600 fro a NIB example but that is because I am trying to work through through 39 series as a collection. I have a 39 no dash a -2 (a 52-2 coming soon), and 3rd gen 39's, 3904,3913. But no 2nd gen 39's. So I would snap that up pretty quick. The $600 would have to be a truly NIB example. More likely I would pay $400-$450.

I have passed on quite a few 639s and 439s just because I dont collect 9mm revisons as much as buy clean ones when an opportunity presents itself because I like them .
The 439 was a nice nickel one but the 639 had that square trigger guard I always disliked,
Had it been a first or second gen would be another story.

I'm with you Engine49, I much prefer the rounded trigger guard and fixed sight models, in fact this is an 83 production with the early serial number, which I purchased used in 86, check out the MMC rear sight, which was added by the original owner....It is LNIB and came with everything in the box, including a sealed cleaning kit WITH a SAT, even though it is a factory fixed sight model....according to the SCSW, these were produced starting in 84 and began with a TAK prefix, but clearly some were made in 1983.....and I did get the original rear sight in the box.....good thing some people are thorough that way....

Hard to tell in the pics, but it's the factory finish, the sides are brushed and everything else looks bead blasted, not sure how the factory did it, but that would be my guess.....

Here's my 539. It's a nickeled one, definitely scarcer than the blued version. The factory letter states "ambidexterous safety". I don't know why the safety is stainless; perhaps that's all they had (made for the 639?). Does anyone else have either a stainless or blued ambidexterous safety on a nickeled 539?
