Default question on lettering

Folks - I have a probably dumb question, but I'd like to know - I have seen photos of pistols (looking at 39-2s in particular) and some have "no" lettering color (just the stamping in the blue )(seems to be the majority) and some have red lettering. Is there any significance to the color? Is it factory done or after market? Can anyone explain?

thanks!

Most of the time it will be after market. Usually done to show markings better in photographs.

can you remove it, or is it "permanent" or cause damage if try to remove?

Typically it's more difficult trying to keep the stuff to stay on than it is removing it.

I've had success using a number of things, all involves letting the "solvent" soak to soften the paint and working it loose with a wood toothpick and scrubbing with a nylon brush. I've used mineral spirits and WD-40 without affecting the bluing.
