Checkman,
At that price, on what I consider a very desirable gun, some may call you a stealing stealer who steals.
I, on the other hand, will proclaim you a shrewd man with astute vision!

My wife says it's ugly. I tell her it's a collectible, solid steel, very strong and kind of cool in it's big massive all steel way. She just says "that's nice honey, but it's ugly". Sigh. But she loves me and humors me.
I couldn't believe the price either, but the owner of the pawn shop is a very knowledgeable gun retailer. So I figure if he wants to sell it to me for that price who am I to argue? Plus this is the third gun I've bought from him in the past two years and I've bought some tools which he didn't discount. So by giving me a good deal he has made me a repeat customer. So I guess he knows what he's doing.
Also I've sent others his way. So he's a smart businessman.

Took it to the range yesterday. Shot like a champ. Absolutely no sniffles. I was able to clang many a steel target at 40 and 50 yards with it. The only thing was it took me a couple magazines to settle in with it. The past few years I've been shooting revolvers and Glocks. I used to own a couple Sigs, but they're gone. I've gotten used to how the Glock design sits low in the hand. I'd forgotten how the older style autos have a higher bore axis and therefore more muzzle flip. But after a few mags I settled in and got to work. Very easy shooting gun. That all-steel frame sucks up the recoil.
Funny how you get used to one system and forget about the idiosyncrasies of others.

Many people don't like the looks of two tone guns. Or want them black on the bottom and chrome/stainless/nickel on top. That's why there are different models of gun made by different manufacturers.
But I think it looks nice at a steal of a price.

I had one of these a few years ago, it was the IPSC version. I bought it new and my wife gave me a real hard time about buying such an ugly gun! I guess at least wives are consistant on this.

Yes indeed. I also want a Mauser C96 Broomhandle. Of course those are pretty pricey anymore. But my wife thinks they're ugly too. I try to explain to her the historical and technical significance of the model but she just keep telling me that it's ugly.
Oh well.

My dad gave me one of his magazines for his 4586. I'm almost 45 years old and my father is still helping me out.

Thanks. It's a very good shooter and (something I forgot to mention in the earlier posts) it's action is very smooth. There is no grit or roughness when working the action manually. It literally feels like it's on rails.

It's a very good shooter. The only trouble I had was that I've spent the last several years shooting revolvers and Glocks. It's been awhile since I shot a pistol that had the higher bore axis like the 745. I let my Sig 220 go a few years ago (it also had a similarly high bore axis) and I've gotten out of practice. But after a few magazines I got the hang of it again and settled in.
No hiccups. I was clanging steel plates with a monotonous regularity at the 25 yard line and fairly consistently from the 50 yard line. It delivered nice tight groups at POA under twenty-five yards. It did everything I wanted it to do. Very nice trigger action incidentally.
Out of curiosity I loaded up a couple magazines with different hollow bullets (Federal, Remington, Winchester hollow points, Blazer 230 grain FMJ, 185 grain lead SWC, and Winchester 230 grain FMJ White Box) all mixed up in the magazines. Fed all those rounds with no difficulty. Slow fire, rapid fired didn't matter. I was impressed.
Oh and it feeds empty casings like a champ. I've heard about that with the S&W autos and darn if it isn't true. Fun. I showed off for a few of my fellow officers at the range and they all got a kick out of it. None of them had heard about the older Smith autos being able to do that.
So while I am more of a revolver collector this pistol is staying in my collection. Besides I haven' t had a 45 ACP in my safe for several years. I need to have another one. The 745 will do nicely.

I bought one of the first 745's to get to Florida so many years ago. At that time I was shooting a lot of IPSC with a tricked out 1911 in .45. I was a solid C+ B sometimes shooter. I had issues with my Colt typical of it, feed jams, Extraction, ejection problems like many back then did.
My 745 (which I still own) NEVER had jams of any kind... I was so confident in it I was able to shoot it and never think about jams. It got me into A class almost immediately. Then came all the guys with optically sighted high cap guns and I was relegated to limited class shooting and THEN they took away cash prizes and I got a couple of the $5 trophies and stopped IPSC forever.
But that handgun is legendary for its reliability, I know you'll love it.
BTW, I found a 645 all stainless steel top end which was easily modded to work on the 745 frame so I could keep my blued IPSC engraved top end as new.

Checkerman, I am glad to hear that you are happy with the 745. When I was looking to replace the 4566TSW I sold, the 745 really caught my eye, had a hard time trying to decide between the 745 and a S&W 1911. Ended up getting the 1911, and although it is a great shooter, I still wish I had a 745 too.

Yes I had to think about it for a little while, but then I decided it needed to be part of my S&W collection.
