Default 4013 Age

I am looking at buying actually trading for a 4013. It is a little high but the guy has 8 mags to go with and they adds up to quite a lot if I were to buy them serparate.

The gun is in excellant shape and he says he bought it new and has not even run a full box through it.

My question is when it was made. The serial number is vccXXXX.

I have the S&W handbook but it doesn't go this high. At least I couldn't find it. I made the mistake of buying the kindle version of the book. Wrong choice.

I have been lurking in this forum for month due a purchase of a 3913 LS last spring. I fell in love with the gun. I have smaller hands and I can handle the 3913 easily. It became my carry gun.
The problem is, like many others, my wife seems to be getting nervous about the way things are in the world and she got a fire arem ID. FOID in Illinois. We are both attending a Utah CCW permit class so we can carry in other staes while we travel.

My next mistake was opening up my gun safe and telling to pick the one that fit her hand and she can easily work the slide.
This sent me looking for new pistol. I am partial to the .40. I found the 4013 and want some background on the gun before I buy.

It is a compact, 8+1 is about all I know. If I read the book right it looks to be mfg after 1998. I figured this is place to go for answers.
Sorry for the wind but I thought some background might help.

Since the original 4013's were made from 1991-1995 I would have to say the VCC would be a late 1995 manufacture. This model was made on a .45 sized frame with the single stack magazine. The later TSW's were made on a modifed 9mm frame and used a double stack or staggered magazine. I have all three versions. The original has a narrower frame but a longer reach to the trigger, where as the TSW's frame is wider but a shorter distance to the trigger. The reach is not much different but some. I personally like the feel of the TSW's over the original. As far as "shootability" I don't see much difference between them all. My opinion is that you can't go wrong with either version. I would suggest buying new recoil springs if it has been shot much by the prior owner.

So, when the book says compact it not as compact as the 3913 or is it similar in size. I can' actually touch the gun as it is available on another forum.
Thanks for the reply.

I called S&W this morning. The gun was made in Novembr 1994. The guy on the phone was really helpful and looked up ther serial number. He said they still call this a double stack as the bullets stagger in the magazine.

I think the S&W contact was a little confused about which 4013 you were questioning. The original used a magazine that is about .510" wide with a wall thickness of .030" x 2 which leaves an opening of .450" for a cartridge with a case that is .420", this doesn't leave much room for stagger or double stack. The TSW's have a magazine that is .800" wide. The frame width of the original, with the grip removed is .790" and the TSW's is 1.00". At least you know when it was manufactured. I think the term "compact" refers more towards the barrel length when compared to the "full size" barrels of +4.00 ".

The original 4013 is a single stack built on the 4513 frame size with the 8rd mag. The TSW series came out in '97 and was built on a 6900 frame size and used a double stack 9rd mag. The TSW guns are slightly thicker in the grip but shorter in overall length and height than the the earlier non-TSW guns.

I am sure your right about which he thought I had. With it being mfg in '94 it had to be the single stack. I was just grateful he took the time to look up the gun and give me the mfg date.
The guy says he bought it new and has run about 50 round through it. He wants $600 but it has 5 factory mags with it. The mags are probably a couple hundred alone. If he is real about the number of rounds the mags are probably near new. Sounds like I should go for it. I just have to sell a glock 17 gen 4, to help pay for it. I never use it and it collecting dust.
Thanks for the help.
