Default Nasty jams in 1911

I have a SW 1911 that jams in exactly the way these pics show. Last round in wilson combat 47D mag. Load was 5.0 grains of bullseye, 230 grain berry's plated. I just put in a new 18.5 wolff spring about 100 rounds ago.

Any ideas as to the cause and remedy?

Maybe too light of a load for that weight spring? Looks like the empty case isn't making it out of the gun before the slide starts to go forward again, jamming the empty case against the chamber. Not picking up the next round either, I assume. Sounds like a short recoil situation to me.

That would be my guess too.

Well the slide locks back, this only happens on the last round in the mag, and generally 5 grains bullseye gives me about 800 fps in that load. I'm thinking the extractor is dropping the case or not holding it tight to the slide, allowing it to drop down into the magazine, and the slide just jams it in further, crushing the mouth. If this is possible, I don't know. And if it is, then how would I fix it?

It wasn't doing this with the original spring?

Hmm.. well it has done this periodically thoughout the last two years of my ownership. I've changed the springs about 4 times and I don't recall it happening with new springs in the past. I can say that it happened with a chip Mccormick mag I have, then thinking the mag spring was weak I stretched it out and I haven't had any problems with that mag since.

The crush marks most likely were caused by the barrel hood. That sounds like too much spring for your load, standard 1911 45 usually is 16-16.5#.

I am positive that it's happened with the 16 pounders from SW. I just this year went to the 18.5# wolff. Same load too.

Try a 14lb spring for that load.

thats funny. browning even went to using "outside" extractors. ex 1903, 1910, 1922 browning. even the saive hi power ended up with external.

This is what I'm thinking. But how do you fix an external extractor? Can they wear out?

Howdy,
This is just a thought. If it only happens on the last round your follower may be engaging the empty brass on ejection and dislodging it from the extractor.
A little mag tuning might fix it.
Good luck
Mike

the empty case is being driven back into the magazine feed lips. If the casing is stuck in the mag, that mag is ruined.

I had a friend who had a springer and it did the same thing you have there. his extractor was so loose, it was clocking and driving the last casing back into the mag.

your gun has a lifetime warranty, call SW and send it back.

I bet your extractor is the issue.

Throw that mag away.

go to 10-8forums, Hilton has some images of malfunctions and the causes. I am not sure if he has one for external extractors. give a look.

Thanks much for the input. I will do as you suggest and if I can't get help then a trip back to the factory is in order.
