Default S&W 457

My father in law has been offered a blued 457 with 3 magazines, like new, 12 rounds through it for $350.

Pictures look to be in excellent shape.

Is that right? Are these good guns? Anything bad about it?

Didn't find anything with the search feature.
Thanks!

That would be an excellent price and I would love to find one at the price and shape you described. I would try the search feature again as there are many threads discussing this model, several fairly recently. The 457 is generally regarded as a fine handgun and a good compromise between capacity and comfort (carry) for a proven round. I'm sure others will respond shortly with more trigger time on these pistols than I to provide more detailed answers to your questions. Good luck!

A like new 457 with 3 mags for $350? Tell your F-I-L not to buy it and TELL ME WHERE IT IS.

Seriously, bust open the wallet and grab it. I have two 457's; one is my EDC and the other is the spare. It's a great gun. There are plenty of threads here praising it - not sure why you didn't find any when you searched.

BUY IT! I just paid $450 for a stainless version and am seeing them go for $425-475 here in FL.

I only have 100rds through mine so far, but it shoots really well for a .45 of that size.

I'm wondering where this gun has been all my life!

Ditto, with the price of mags currently that is a good price. My 457 is a favorite, and I shoot it better than my 645!

Buy it. Now. This second. Great gun. Excellent shooter for any size. I love mine. You cannot go wrong with a 457.

Buy it. Or tell me where it is so I can send my son to buy it!

I have one, which came with ammo, a holster, and seven magazines, but I paid about $500.00. Which I thought was a good price.

Another highly underrated semi auto from S&W.

I bought the stainless 457 and 5 mags, along with a box of ammo for $425. Pristine condition! I love it. I hope you've gotten yourself one by now. Enjoy it!!

You did very well. My 457S is my every day carry gun. About 2 years ago I paid $400 for the gun and two mags. The stainless ones don't get offered that often and if I come across another I will buy it.

This was the first 3rd Gen 45 I had that caused FTRTB issues and I never could get it worked out and lost confidence in it so sold it. Could have been an ammo problem but all mags were new from S&W so that wasn't the problem and recoil spring was new. I'll never know.

ColColt, I'm sorry about your loss. I feel your pain. The 457 is one of the best S&W auto's ever, IMO. It probably was just an ammo problem, however, your right. You'll never know. If you had the S&W mags, it has to be the ammo. NEVER use a "ProMag". Those things will make a grown man cry! (Because of the money wasted on them)

It did that with two different bullet shapes and that was what puzzled me. No, I know better that to use Pro Mags. I used factory and even bought some Wolff mag springs for one to no avail. It just wasn't in the cards. My 4506 on the other hand, has been 100% reliable from day one and that was 21 years ago with all ammo-factory or reloads.

I had the same issue with a 4516-1 and it was sent back to S&W twice, with the problem not solved. I replaced the recoil spring and the problem never showed up again, but like you I never trusted the weapon after that and sold it. I also briefly had a 457, but traded it for a SW99c in 9mm that I like better.
