Default Extraction issues on a new 915

Hello Gents,

I have purchased 2 S&W 915's off of Gun Broker. One back in April, the other this past week.
Both were advertised as having refinished slides. I wanted to grab one of these 3rd gen greats before they disappear or completely get out of control in price.

The first one from April, had about 50 rounds thru it with both factory mags and Mec-Gar mag's. Ran flawlessly, but with some Point of Impact issues. Which turned out to be too much trigger finger. After the first 50 or so, she started to fail to extract every 3-4 rounds. Now its every round.

Ordered another for my Dad. Sad story here.
I had given my Dad a Model 36 Police Chief Special 4inch for Father's Day last year. Parents house was broken into 2 weeks ago and the pistol was stolen. I know he is more sad about it than I am since it was more sentimental than anything. So he needed a replacement pistol. He liked my 915 when I got it, so thought another surprise gift would be in order.

Fast forward to Friday. Picked up the pistol, and took her home to clean. Did a full detail strip. Lots of gunk, but everything cleaned up to almost perfect internals. The frame has seen better days, but everything is functional.

Took her to our local range on Saturday, and his is doing the exact same thing as mine. Every round, fails to get stripped out. The case's are getting crunched between the slide and barrel as it tries to exact the case. Then the next round gets jammed up on the feed ramp.

So now I really need to know where to start. I have never detail stripped a slide. I'm sure I could find some youtube vids or something as a guide. I have contacted the seller on Gun Broker, just in case he is unaware his refinished slides might be messed up.

What would S&W be able to do? Do these things have lifetime type warranty's that will get the slide back in working shape? Will there be a cost since the slides are parked vs blued/anodized like the frame?

Or would it be worth to have a good local shop just look into it and replace the extractor and extractor spring? Mine is not a priority. I have other firearms that are at the top of my home defense list. My Dad though has a Mossberg and that's it. This was going to be a pump in the night gun for him.

On another note as well: As I was detail stripping the frame, I also removed the mag disconnect safety from both pistol's. How does that play into a S&W repair, or could it be somehow responsible (this is just full disclosure. I do not believe that the disconnector has anything to do with an extraction.)?

Did you remove the mag disconnect plunger and spring from under the rear sight? Or did you remove the lever? If you removed the lever, that is the ejector, the gun will not eject an extracted spent casing without it.....if the cases are getting crushed between the slide and barrel, then the extractor is not the issue, when an extractor fails to do its job, the spent case is left in the chamber, sounds to me like you either have an ejector issue, or you removed it, to disable the mag safety you only need to remove the spring and plunger, which requires removing the rear sight, the ejector also acts as the mag safety lever, but must remain in place for the pistol to function.....

Pics below show what was removed.
Nothing from the slide. Just from the frame.

Yes, you goofed, that lever IS the ejector, that's why you are having the problem, and from what I can see in the pics, it appears that these pistols went through an armorer, as the slide stop, safety, and extractor have been replaced.....they appear to be stainless steel new parts....they were probably went through prior to trade in, as they are probably police trade ins......

How is this not the Extractor?

And why is it that when I removed the part in this,

did the mag disconnect safety no longer work.
And to clarify in case I am using the wrong verbage, if the hammer is cocked, and the mag is out of the weapon, I can still pull the trigger. However, before that part was out, I could not.

I didnt know 915's were actually Police issues. I only though the 5906's were Police issues since the ambi slide safety. Vs the 915 is only on 1 side. I thought the 910's and 915 were the value model's and not for Law Enforcement agencies.

Two things are required for successful ejection of a spent casing, the EXTRACTOR, which is shown in your small pic, and is in the slide, and the EJECTOR, which is the lever that you removed. The ejector also doubles as the mag safety lever, and if you want to disable that feature (not recommended) you only need to remove the previously mentioned plunger and spring, which are located in the slide, under the rear sight......the extractor pulls the spent casing from the chamber, and as the slide travels rearward, the ejector pushes the spent casing up and to the right, basically throwing it free from the slide......without the ejector, which is the part you removed, the casing simply stays in the extractor......and yes, many 910 and 915 models saw law enforcement and security duty....

Well that sucks.
However an easy fix for both pistol's. I'll tear them down tomorrow afternoon, and hopefully get to the range this week.

Definitely learned something new with the 910/915's also being in service. The parts are stainless, so they could have been replaced by an armorer like you stated.

Good luck with your 915s, as many forum members will attest, law enforcement trade ins are generally ugly externally, with pretty rough finishes from constant carry, but are usually internally pretty nice, not usually seeing many rounds through them...hopefully my explanation was a help to you...
