What is the difference between the S&W 1911 and the S&W 1911 E series

I have a pro compact and a standard full sized and really can't see much difference. The e series has the scallop serrations and generally looks a bit nicer.

The E has no firing pin safety...easier to clean!

Other than the scallops on the slide, the main difference is the extractor, the E series has the larger Pro style extractor.

All "E" 's are manufactured in Maine. Previous S&W 1911's were manufactured in Massachusetts.

Not 100% accurate. I just purchased a non-E series (108284) which was manufactured in Houlton, Maine. I don't believe they make any 1911 in Springfield anymore, that's all been moved to ME.

From my limited experience with the SW1911s the E in E series stands for enhanced. These enhancements include a larger extractor, scalloped slide serrations, grooved top on sighting plane, no firing pin safety with a titanium firing pin, crowned barrel, deeply checkered front strap. And I'm sure I might have missed a couple enhancements. The E series are extremely attractive pistols.

In no particular order:

1911 has Swartz type firing pin safety; E Series does not have any firing pin safety, and is in that sense more like a Series 70 Colt.

1911 has more traditional slide serrations; E Series has fish scale type.

1911 has true round top to slide; E Series has flat top slide with grooves.

1911 has thin external extractor; E Series has thicker external extractor.

1911 has standard type trigger; E Series has Joubert patent trigger, which has a bump that can be filed down quickly by a fitter to allow a slop free fit between the trigger and the frame.

Grips on the two pistols are different.

E Series has muzzle crown and the ejection port is opened up more in the lower front area of the port for better ejection of cases.

There are probably other differences as well, but the two that mean the most to me are the lack of the firing pin safety and the better extractor.

I recently bought both the TA ans SC. Have shot the TA and the performance was excellent. Both guns are extremely well made. The only issue I have with the TA is the grip safety seems a little "sloppy". Have looked at others since and all seem to be the same. However, it's not an issue with firnig the gun. The SC is just an all around beautiful gun which is light, fits the hand very well and will be my carry gun.

For the "E" pistols, yes, that's correct. Your statement "Previous S&W 1911's were manufactured in Massachusetts." is what I was referring to. Prior "non-E" pistols started in Springfield, but were subsequently moved to ME also. That's the point I was clarifying.
