Default 4506 Info/review

I am thinking of purchasing a used 4506. I would like any information or reviews on this firearm. Let me know what you guys think of the 4506. If I do purchase it I will be sending it back to Smith & Wesson to get refinished and gone through. Thanks guys!

Default Big and heavy

The 4506 is a handful. Heavy and strong, dead reliable and shoots like a champ. 2.6 pounds, 8 rounds in the mag.

I've enjoyed shooting them. Not everyone likes the full size pistol but if it fits your hand it is a great pistol. I prefer the full size S&W to the 1911

Hi Steve here. I have had my 4506 for some time. I can put any ammo through it . It is a full size pistol. I feel it is built like a tank.I recomend it.

I don't own a 4506 (yet), but the 4506 and 4006 (I do have one of those) are just big steel bricks that feel indestructible. I cannot imagine you would be disappointed in one unless you ended up exhausted from lugging one around all day.

If you buy it and find for some reason that it is not the gun for you, you will have no trouble moving it along to someone else when you replace it with something you like better. Win/win, no downside. Go get it.

The only objections I have ever had were the weight and the stocks. The stocks are easily changed. Other than that, it comes down to weight and it is just a big, heavy, duty-grade, stainless steel .45 Auto. It is bear to lug around unless you wear it on a duty belt, so for a range gun, if it appeals to you, that is great. No problem. To carry it on a reinforced "dress" belt, not so great.

There has been some complaining about the controls and reach of the trigger. I suppose for a person with small hands, it might be awkward. I have never noticed that and I would say my hand-size is average. It is a good gun for those who want a steel frame and double-action. I can take or leave DA, preferably leave it, so I prefer a 1911, which is already big enough and heavy enough. JMHO.

Some of the department aromorers here could tell us more about maintenance and reliability. I have never heard of the design being a parts-breaker, but common sense says the long-term supply of spares will eventually be going away, probably sooner rather than later.
