Default Uncommon 4006 Performance Center? New Information Added

I have added new information I received from Mike Priwer in response to a query I posted to Roy Jinks on the SWCA side of the forum. Mike was kind enough to respond with the commentary and images to be found in post #8. Based upon his information I am inclined to believe that the gun I posted below is factory original but will probably not be able to confirm it via factory letter as the records on hand for these guns seems sketchy and incomplete at best. My main areas of concern, 5 1/4" Barsto Barrel, Bo-Mar sights, blue controls and the single action trigger all appeared to have offered by the Performance Center at various times. It seems that the PC was quite willing to build small runs of unusual guns for distributors such as Lew Horton and I think this gun may fall into this category.

My thanks to Mike Priwer for sharing this information and allowing me to share it here.

I should preface this post by saying I am not an active semi-auto collector and my interest is primarily revolvers but I recently ran across a 4006 PC gun that I found rather interesting and have not found much information on and perhaps some of the knowledgeable members here can shed a bit of light on the gun. The gun is a full size 40 SW with the following features. An extended 5 1/4" Barsto barrel, Bo-Mar adjustable rear sight and dovetailed front. There is a captured hemispherical bushing mounted in the front of the slide. The gun appears to have an oversize magazine release button and a safety mounted on the left side. The trigger pull is perhaps the best I have encountered in my limited semi-auto experience. Two 11 round magazines with yellow followers were included one of which is stamped with the PC trademark. All the major components are stamped with "71" which I assume was intended to keep the parts together during fitting and assembly.

The bit of information I have gleaned is that was a special order Lew Horton gun intended for target shooting but please correct me if this is incorrect. I have no idea of the value of the gun as I have found no comparable ones for sale, any advice would be welcomed.

I suspect it would be a fine shooter and would enjoy hearing the range reports of anyone with a similar item.

Default Sorry, no info but....

That thing is about 14 kinds of cool. Hope you get some info on it, maybe you could contact S&W directly to get the history.

It may be a one off special order.

Now my ordinary adjustable-sight 4006 looks shabby! What a fine pistol that is.

Sorry, no further info specific to that particular firearm. The rotating barrel bushing is a feature of other PC semiautos. I have it on a 952-1 I picked up earlier this year.

The product code 104401 is not known to the authors of SCSW3. Most PC products have codes beginning with 170. There are .40 S&W PC semiautos, but nothing like this one. I suspect the box label says it all -- "Special." Somebody told S&W what he wanted, and they built it in the Performance Center.

Lew Horton apparently offered some compact .40 semiautos -- Shorty Forty models -- but I don't find any references to match target semiautos like this one. Could be it is one of a kind, in which case value is completely a matter of negotiation between a current and prospective owner. Simply as a PC semiauto it is bound to be at bare minimum a $1000-1200 gun, and a dedicated collector of .40s might go two or three times that minimum to acquire a rare variety.

Just guessing. I don't know.

I was looking in the Performance Section of my S&W catalog this weekend and think I saw a .40 that looked like this or was similar? I don't have my book handy, but will check tonight or someone will take a look and be along here shortly. BTW, that thing is cool.

I looked last night and mistakenly was looking at a .45, didn't see anything referenced like yours. Maybe a one of a kind.....

It looks like an early "Tactical Forty" based on the serial number PCD0011. I have #PCD0147. The product code is 170020. Yours must be a special order which the PC would do at that time. It has custom or special features such as the Bo Mar sight and the single action trigger. Mine has standard Novak iron sights, PC barrel and TDA trigger. All other features are the same. I also have a PC 40 Limited. Yours looks to be a combination of the two as the Limited has Bo Mar sights and a single action trigger. The only two exceptions from my limited is the Limited has a checkered front strap and a 5" PC barrel compared to the parallel lines on your front strap (same as my Tactical Forty) and the Bar Sto 5 1/4" barrel. You have a unique PC 4006. I hope this information is useful.

RedCardinal, thanks for your reply. I agree the gun seems to incorporate the features of a couple of models. I shall have to try and dig a bit deeper for information.

This appears to be done after it left the factory (PC). IMHO
The sights are nothing the PC used and the factory would mark any TDA model that they converted to SA.
The blue controls are also a later thing.

The 104401 " Special" product code was used on several of the early 40 models before the 17xxxx started , including the comp and tactical
As RedCardinal stated, this started as a Tactical 40.
Should be a great shooter.

The following information was provided by to me by Mike Priwer on the SWCA side of the forum and posted with his permission. Thanks Mike.

John

Here is some additional information about these guns. I owned
PCD0039, which I bought new from Lew Horton Distributors when
the 4006 was introduced. There were actually two models of this gun:
the Comp 40, and the Tactical model !

This first image is the Lew Horton flyer for the gun :

The next two images are the front & back S&W factory flyer :

This next image is a somewhat self-explanatory story from Roy,
elaborating on confusion in earlier factory letters from him.

The problem now, in getting a current factory letter, is that the imprtant
information in the factory records has been lost.

I do have an earlier factory letter, but I think the information above
is a good explanation.

This next picture is from the Amoskeag Auction catalog, showing PCD0039
in that auction. You can see most of the features in this first picture. The
second gun was also one of mine that I sold at the same time. It has some
features that are found on your gun. This was a much later series.

Now - this last picture is from the Amoskeag auction early in 2004. It is serial
DPC0072. (Note the PCD vs DPC serial number prefix - these two models are
related. They simply moved the third character of the serial number to the
first position. ) This gun, with the exception of the barrel length, looks much
more like yours. SA trigger, two-tone treatment, etc. Also look at the contour
of the slide near its front - the same milling. I don't have a flyer for this gun
( it was my gun ). Check out the contour of the hammer - is yours like this one,
or like PCD0039 ?

Regards, Mike Priwer

Hello Mike,

By any chance do you have any documentation for the SN RRS0027?

Thank you for your attention.

Check : Fusion Firearms I had an LPA adjustable put on my 4006CHP that I got from them .

Concerning this post , I just traded into one of these , SN#90 , with a Bar-to barrel . Took it out today , it's one accurate piece of PC perfection .

PCD0182 with 5” .40 S&W performance barrel, not the 5.25” Bar-Sto. Also came with S&W logo Hogues and in a PC briefcase, not blue plastic PC case.

I tried posting some pics , but it kept coming back invalid file . I've never had a problem before , I don't know what's up .

A little follow up on the range day . I have to put it up there with my 945s . Even though it doesn't have the Bomar sights , I was still hitting steel pins at 50 yards . The trigger wasn't quite the same , but I can't complain . I'm going to put in for a letter and see if there's any more info .
