This may actually be the solution for my problem. It refers to the IPSC reloading list and another source. This sounds good enough to me. I'll keep you informed.

By the way, anyone interested in this model Super9 which I found in Holland? I may be of assistance if you'd be interested.

By the way, the other one which was sold already has sn MSF 8819

Recently I saw a few of these guns sold through Dutch importers in the Netherlands. They all seem to have serial numbers starting with MSF 88.. It looks like some US government agency replaced its pistols.

I saw that one as well!
If you follow GB - not always do similar items do as well - just my opinion.
If you sell - OBVIOUSLY - set a reserve you're happy with.

Oh, I don't know about that. I believe that part of what generates the wild interest at GB is $1 open and no reserve.

To the above...
Oh yeah, I saw that one.
That may very well be a "high water mark" for the Super 9. I certainly don't want to say anything negative about the extremely -COOL- and fantastic looking pistol that the Super 9 sure is, but some things come to mind and none of them play well to an audience.

Or maybe not since this was posted back on 07-11-2015 in this same thread...

For what it's worth, I bought two of these in Jan 2003.

1) Serial No MSF6959 for 700$.
I got this one from GunsAmerica or GunBroker; I do not remember which.

2) Serial No MSF6894 for 830$
I had a local dealer order this one from Smith &Wesson.

Both of these came in the Blue box with three barrels. I do not think they were sold as Performance Center guns.

I understand that the later ones came only with the 9mm barrel.

About the same time I bought several 1000-rnd cases of Federal 356TSW ammo from CDNN for slightly less than 100$/case.

Default Finally got my 356TSW barrel approved

Dear friends gunlovers,

You won't believe the trouble I went through for getting my S&W Super 9 approved. Guns regulations in Europe are ridiculously strict. I got the barrels 9x19 and 9x21 approved easily. The trouble was with the 356 TSW. The amo at the official 'testing agency' was destroyed end of the 90's. The result is the barrel could not be tested. This meaning I could not get an approval.

The officials threatened to withdraw my licenses. It took me literally hours to explain to them that this 356 TSW was the least harmless barrel since there's no ammo available in Europe. They wanted to cut my barrel in half!

Finally I found 100 empty shells in northern Germany. They cost something close to the price of pure gold. I got them by special courier service.

After that I had to get all the ammunitions calculations. None of the manufacturers were willing to give the info. So I approached a ballistics lab to make all the calculations.

After that I had to make a deal with the guy at the lab of the 'approval agency'. Fortunately I'm fluent in French and after some 20-30 telephone calls we got to know each other and this guy was willing to help me.

Finally all docs I submitted were accepted. And my barrel got approved. I'll get my hardware back somewhere next week. I'm really looking forward to testing it ... .

Right now I'm looking into another thrilling project. A Sphinx grand master. Which I'll be able to buy at 1/3 of the new price. It has fired only 500 shots so far. Testing next Saturday... .

I'd love to get some of that 356TSW amo to shoot it. I'm afraid I'll have to manufacture it myself.
Should anyone would have to go through a similar process and have to manufacture his own ammo for an official approval, I'd be willing to share this information. This might be of particular interest for people inside Europe.

Most shooters of the 356TSW load their own due to scarcity of ammo. Great gun and glad you got it through.

That sounds like a lot of good work on your part to get the barrel approved through a rather complex system. Dutch, English, and French; that is quite a multi-lingual resume, I can only claim English and GD&T.

I just searched for the "Sphinx Grand Master", looks like an impressive setup. I think you should have a Super 9 vs Sphinx shootout and post your results.

The scarcity of ammunition is not the hard part, it is the scarcity of brass.

Obviously you can cut 9x23 Winchester, but I like correctly headstamped brass and right now 9x23 Winchester is too rare to sacrifice. Besides I shoot 9x23

Default brass

I guess brass (without powder or primers) would not be subject to special controls. Although the receiver would need an arms permit I guess. @s537

Digging through the information on the following website:

Collectors Firearms Archives - Home

Which I was made aware of in this thread: PC 845 Limited: 2 variations or -THREE- ?!

I stumbled across another Performance Center Super 9 - it appears to be a factory demo and I added the new information to the bottom of the original post.

Hi Everyone

I spotted Super 9 MSF8522 a while ago and was lucky enough to purchase it. It's one of the Wischo units and has the 3 barrels and factory case.

It's a beautiful piece.

Cheers,
Scott.

MSF8522 would be a new serial number range for the Super 9; if you have any pictures to share, I would love to add them to the original post.

The Dutch magazine article has been linked to the original post including the "google translation" of the text. It's not 100% accurate as you can tell by the following paragraph, but you get the idea:

"A pistol that can only trigger three different patterns by a single-handed fishing instructor, of course, requires a comprehensive test. A number of questions can be asked in this phenomenon. Can one and the same warehouse be the fit patterns well despite their different sleeve lengths? Let one and the same closing spring repeat the weapon without problems, despite the differences in gas pressure? But unfortunately, the answer to these questions should be guilty of you. A combination of lack of time other non-contributory causes made it possible to report only the performance with 9 mm Para ammunition. Sorry, but it's no different."

About 3/4 of the way down in the original post I have added the latest Gunbroker auction results for both variants of the Super 9.

Thanks to Beemer1 for helping me keep an eye out for these auctions.

Aside from the 5" slide, adjustable sights and trigger they had what they called "Speed Bumps" on the frame rails, small raised pads at the front and rear of the rails to tighten up the frame-to-slide clearance.
I was about to inquire about those raised areas on the frame rails. Very unique gun that I didn't know existed.

I'd say paying 60% less than a collector condition pistol is not bad.

Mags are cheap and Midway still shows the extra barrels as a special order for $115 each.

If you can get a better picture of your pistol that shows the serial number, I can update the one that I currently have shown for MSF6994 in the original post.

Default Yet another number

Hi,

I am new in this forum and have no experience with S&W.

I detected a Smith & Wesson Super 9, cal. 9x19 at a dealer in Germany. S/N is TDM9745.

Dealer asks about 1.000 USD ... is that a fair price?

You raise an interesting question. What is fair market value in Germany? I assume you are thinking of buying it there and owning it there. If so, I doubt many of us here Stateside can help you much when it comes to German value.

On the other hand, if you are in the United States or another country and found it at a German gun store, and perhaps you are thinking of buying it and having it sent to you, be careful. I understand that there are a lot of reasons you might not be able to do this, or that it might be very expensive.

For whatever help this provides: in the USA, $1,000 would be a very good buy on a Super 9.

Thank you for a reply.
Thank you for providing a picture of an unknown serial number range for the Super 9, I have added it to the original thread.

$1,000 would be a great deal in the US, based on the latest Gunbroker sales, but the collector market may not be the same for these pistols in Europe/Germany.
.
Member "Lewieke" has seen a few of these pistols for sale in Europe, he may be able to help you with a value.

It was my main intention, to support your summary, value evaluation is second, but I am happy to read that it seems to be a good opportunity.

I just acquired a Super 9 which is listed in the beginning of the thread. Shot 50 rounds through it but would like to replace the recoil spring. Does anyone know the part number of the spring?

Tom
PN# 200710000 (currently all S&W PN# have 9 digits)
is the same as the 4506 (5" bbl.) "wadcutter" recoil spring (??#).

PN# 060480000 (the leading zero is significant)
is the standard 5906 (4" bbl) recoil spring, 14#

Can you explain what you mean by a "long" & "short" guide rod?

Also, what are PN#s 24298(0000) & 24917(0000)? They don't appear in the S&W Parts Catalog.

. . . . .

Wouldn't a Super 9 equipped with a 356TSW barrel have needed a heavier recoil spring for it?

In my "unscientific home" test a factory recoil spring in my 3566 Limited (5" bbl.) was equivalent to Wolff's 15# 4506 recoil spring (#47315).

A 5906 recoil spring (#060480000) in it has significantly less measured force (4#s).

They interchanged guide rod length. My super nine has the long guide rod.

Pictures are PPC 9's to show the different lengths.

If I had a Super 9 and enough mags, I would like to try it out at a USPSA match Production class! That would be fun and turn some heads!

Default 356 TSW reloading data review

I know this is an old post, & I'm not knocking the effort to help a fellow enthusiast/collector/handloader, but I thought it important to qualify the handload data shown, 9.1gr/VV-3N37, for the 356 TSW cartridge.

The potential problem (I see) with this data is that no COAL" is stated with it.

SAAMI specs for the 356 TSW state the max. COAL is 1.160" for it.

In my 3566 Limited I load mine to no longer than 1.155" to ensure they feed properly in it's 9x19 M5906 style double stack magazine as 1.160" long rounds tend to stick on occasion when feeding.

I do not handload using 3N37 but I know it's very close to Power Pistol in it's burn rate, which I do use mainly, and 9.1gr is more than my max & would appear to be an overload.

SAAMI max pressure is listed at 50K psi for the 356 TSW.

QuickLOAD calculates 9.1gr/3N37 with 125gr JHP @ 1.160" COAL would be approximately 71.4K psi.

I believe the referenced data was from Jeff Maass who has compiled many IPSC Load Data sheets, for various cartridges, & can be found by doing a internet search.

However, I was unable to find an IPSC Load Data sheet for the 356 TSW by Jeff Maass but I "believe" that data likely originated from his 2001 9x21 IPSC Loads List sheet (below).

In fact, that exact load, W-W 124gr FMJ, 9.1gr/3N37 at 1446fps is listed in it, BUT, the COAL is 1.250".

In QuickLOAD a COAL of 1.250", using this recipe, yields an estimated pressure of 46.8K psi, much safer.

A COAL of 1.250" would work fine in a large frame pistol (1911, etc.) but is too long for the 9x19 sourced Super 9 or 3566 pistol magazines.

356 TSW cartridges loaded to 1.160" COAL using 3N37 & a 125gr JHP would need to use a reduced charge to be safe.
