I bought another one.

Last week I bought a 659:

S&W Model 659

It impressed me to the point that this week, I picked up a Model 5904.





After shooting my 659, I felt like I may have wanted to carry it in the future, but I would have preferred something a little lighter. I stopped by another gun store today and found this one laying in a corner next to a Llama and a Bryco.

I traded a pistol I didn't have much interest in for it, and if it performs as well as my 659, I'll feel like I came out ahead. I haven't shot this pistol yet.

I have a few questions about this one as well.

Does anyone know when this one was made (Serial # TEF6637)? I assume it is an early 3rd generation model, since it has a squared trigger guard.

Does anyone know the significance of this number on the dustcover? I assume it is an old duty gun.



Another reason I believe it was an issued pistol, is because it came with adjustable (dead) night sights.





Does anyone know if replacements are available, or if there is a way to have an outfit install some new tritium vials?

This was another impulse buy, but I'd be much more likely to carry this one than the 659. It is lighter, and has a smoother and lighter DA trigger. I also wouldn't feel as bad about scuffing this one up. I'll report how I feel about this one once I take it out shooting.

I would agree on it being a former duty weapon, tell-tale signs are the right side of grip panel being beat up, as opposed to the left side, which is a clear indication of open carry by a right hander, the beat up tang, which is always a good indication, and the inventory or control number, which I have seen before on LE pistols, as well as night sights, those all add up to it's former life.......great find, most LE pistols tended to be stainless by the third gen.....

I went to the range for a quick range session, and fired 100 rounds.

I had a single FTExtract, where the empty shell was pulled halfway out of the chamber, with the next round in the mag being fed into it. I checked the casing and it looked like the extractor may have slipped over it.

The other 99 rounds functioned fine. I was hitting the target, though I did better my first time out with my 659. The 5904 was a little more snappy than the 659 (more than likely due to the lighter weight), but it is not that big a deal to me as my current carry pistol is more snappy than the 5904.

As for the FTE, I'm not going to jump to conclusions just yet. I will put more rounds through the 5904 to see if the FTE issue happens again, or if it was just a fluke or a bad round. Worse case scenario, I'll end up getting the extractor replaced, though it does seem to be putting enough tension on the casings.

I like it, and I will be keeping this pistol.

If those are dead Trijicon night sights, Trijicon will most likely be able to re-lamp them for $54. Call to get an RA number and then send them the slide.

Since it is an earlier pistol you may want to check that the grip recall has been dealt with.

jsbethel is dead on....I had them do 2 of my LEO 4006's that had dead lamps....AND they gave me a new warranty for them to boot!!

I realize that this is a very old thread, but can anyone post a picture of the "small dimple next to the large opening". I recently received a 5904 as a gift and I'm not sure if the grips were updated. Thanks.
