.45 full size pistol other than 1911?
Looking for recommendations on a .45 pistol other than a 1911. I have several other guns but do not have a .45auto. I don't particularly like the 1911. Looking for something different. Any suggestions or input would be appreciated.

You might like the XD-45 from Springfield Arms. I highly recommend them to my friends. Three of which bought an XD-45 after shooting mine. It has two 13 round magazines and one sweet DAO trigger. It is as accurate as my Colt Government model and has been 100% reliable with a variety of ammo.

I once swore I'd never buy a plastic pistol. Then I tried the M&P 45 with the 4" barrel and full grip. If I had only one 45 this would be the one and only. Superb ergonomics, reasonably accurate, 10 round mag. Had Bowie do the grip treatment and mount a Trijicon RMR with tall front sight. In love with it. When/if I carry a 45, this is the one.

4506?
4566?
4586?
That's probably where I would start...

If, by different, you mean not a single action, then this list is a good start:
Smith & Wesson M&P .45; or, if you can find one, a 3rd Gen such as the 4506, 4566, etc.
SIG Sauer P220
HK45 and HK45C
Glock 21SF (much too fat in the slide and even with the SF grip, still too big for 90% of all shooters)
Springfield Armory XD-M or XD-S
Beretta PX4 Storm
Ruger KP345
FNH Models FNX45 or FNX45 Tactical

The 4500 series seems a natural for someone on this site. I don't have one yet, but I can recommend, wholeheartedly, some non-1911s that I have and enjoy...
SigSauer P220
Glock 21
USP 45
**ETA**Ruger Bisley Blackhawk .45LC/.45acp convertible. Hadn't thought to include a revolver, but until Penmon brought it up, I forgot some people take the word pistol to include revolvers.

S&W Mdl.25 or 625 (I have a 625 mountain gun in 45ACP/45LC
CZ 97 All steel DA/SA
FN FNP-45 Stainless Steel slide Polymer Frame DA/SA
Para Ordnance P-14 LDA ( Light Double Action)14 rounds, amazing DA trigger.
I own these four and would not trade or sell them for another 45. I like the 1911, own several. These are all cut from a different cloth.
Look em up and see what you think.

I have been looking for the ideal non-1911 pattern pistol for over 40 years, and I think I have finally found it. The FNH FNP-45 holds 14+1, has a manual safety, is fully ambidextrous, points like a 1911, not a Glock and is very high quality. I have all of the pistols sm mentions, except the Beretta and Springfield, and the FNH beats them all by a wide margin in my opinion.

Ruger P-90. More reliabale than a 1911 and more accurate as well (unless we're talking Gold Cup or a custom gun).
That's based on my experience.

S&W 945
Not hard to find nice used versions for reasonable prices (compared to last new retail).

I've got a 4566 and a 457 (compact) and I 'd recommend them both.

Ruger P-95 (still in production) or P345. I have a KP944 which is very similar to the P-95 and it shoots very nicely and has never had a failure of any kind. Rugers have a reputation for being extremely strong.

SW99-45. Polymer frame, nice grips and night sights from the factory. 9+1.

In addition to 1911's in45 ACP I have two others which may suit your needs.
The S&W 945 PC an exceptionally accurate gun with a first rate factory trigger. I used it for a number of years in bullseye pistol matches.
The second is a full size S&W M&P45 which I purchased on a whim. Totally reliable with a wide variety of bullet shapes and weights and surprisingly accurate - 1 1/4 to 2 inch ten shot groups at 50 ft.

Since you didn't set any criteria beyond "other than a 1911," then all other full-size .45s.
I have a Glock 30 and a S&W 4566, neither exactly "full size." Both are great shooters and highly reliable. I like the heavier weight and grip feel of the 4566 for the range, but prefer the G30's higher capacity for carry. Both are on full-time duty at the home.
For full size, the equals would be a Glock 21 and a S&W 4506. Tough to beat either.

I would have to add a vote for the Ruger P 345. The one I have is a great shooter and not at all hard to carry. I had a Sig 220 which was a great gun but I found it abit heavy and large to carry around. Be good for home defense however.

The P95 is a 9MM. The .45 is a P90 and its out of production.
The P345 would also be a good choice. I have one as well.

Pictues of favorite 45's
I attached several photos of my favorite 45's
From left to right they are as follows
FN FNP-45, Stainless Steel slide Polymer Frame DA/SA
Feels weird because of the light polymer frame but once you drop in the loaded magazine it all comes together.
CZ 97 All steel DA/SA, carry this cocked and locked or fire double action.Heavy, fat grips but soaks up the recoil and shoots ever time you pull the trigger.
Para Ordnance P-14 LDA ( Light Double Action)14 rounds, amazing DA trigger, although this resembles a 1911 it is a very different animal because of the smooth light double action trigger there is no transition between your first shot and all the other 14 45acp's.

There's so many to choose from. I'd say take a little time and fondle a few. Surely one will tickle your fancy. I like the Glock 21.

For carry? 4513TSW, HK45 compact, HK USP 45 compact. They are called "compacts" but are really full size pistols with the capacity of a 1911.
For all around HD, range use, competition and occasional carry? S&W 4566, 4506-1, HK45.
There are other makes/models and personal preferences play into selection of course. But the above models I've shot extensively and have no hesitation in suggesting.
Reliable accurate tack drivers. Good luck with your search! Regards 18DAI

Aside from my beloved very full size.. 4506-1, 4566 or 4513TSW I
would highly recommend the Sig 220 and FN FNP 45, HK45.
I believe FN and Sig are currently making the 2 best full size 45's. I still think the 3rd gen S&W 45x or 45xx series are some of the toughest, most reliable pistols ever produced.

My 4566TSW is the only .45 I've shot that approaches a 1911 in shootability and accuracy. It actually surpasses some 1911's that I no longer own.

The Ruger 345 is lighter weight and more accurate than my much more expensive custom 1911. The grips fit my small hand well and the light rail is handy for mounting a flashlight. The polymer frame does a good job of soaking up recoil.
I prefer it for carrying and as a house gun over the 1911.

First). 945 PC gun
Second). 4563tsw
Third). 4513tsw
Forth). Sig 220 carry
Just my humble list after shooting all the above. I would have to say that the best gun I ever shot was my Springfield Lw champion operator. Really loved that gun.

.45 Pistol other than 1911
Without a Doubt.... Get a Stoeger Cougar .45 it is one well made gun. Made by Stoeger a subsidiary of Beretta and made on the original Beretta machines used for Beretta Cougar. Rack the slide, it's smooth as butter. Accurate, dependable, shoots any ammo well. A Great gun!

I've had a couple Springfield 1911's but sold because I did not like SA, even though triggers were something like 5-6#.
Also had 2 Kimber Eclipse Ultras - fine pistols, but again sold because of SA trigger - especially was not comfortable with triggers that were about 3#.
Had a KAHR PM4544 - nice little pocket pistol. Some say they kick like hell since they are so small and lightweight. I had no issue with recoil - I even enjoyed shooting it one-handed. Sold it because I really did not need it, plus I don't like polymer.
Bought a Ruger P90 and regretted it and sold it. It was accurate, said to be very reliable. My issue was that when I got it, I called it my "big, clunky" gun - apologies to Ruger fans. Gun friend said it was like a tractor. It certainly did not compare to Smiths.
I had to have a .45, so what did I do ? Bought a 4566 because I'm a Smith fan, I like SA/DA, and I especially like decockers.

Glock 21
S&W M&P45
FN FNX45
CZ97
S&W 4506
These would be the only ones i would consider. The FN holds the most amount of ammo. Something likea 15+1with Glock in second with 13+1. The Full sizeguns M&P is 10+1 but it is about the thickness of a Glock 19/17 9mm.
The CZ ans 4506 Smith are all steel. The CZ has a very far reaching trigger. I'm not kidding it's like way out there. And the Smith has the mag drop safety. Both or alsothe DA hammer guns not striker fired.
The FN is a double action hammer but polymer and holds the most amount of ammo.
All these guns new are about $500-$600. If you want cheaper in the used gun department your best bet is the Glock and the Smith M&P. Both in the $350-$450 range depending on accessories

Hard to beat a 1911, but I shoot my 4566 better than either of my 1911's. I have has other 4500 series and they are a remarkable value on the used market. Good luck choosing.

The 1911 isnt hard to beat if one gets rid of all nestalgia. Sure its a great looking gun but one that was made when labor was cheap. Today hand fitted parts are expansive. Its a single stack with a 7+1 or 8+1. It must be checked often and parts replaced. If one is going for ultimate accuracy, 1911 all the way but if someone wants battlefield accuracy there are plenty of great guns that are less maintenance and very durable.
I LOVE the 1911 and people always make an argument that it went through several world wars and then some. True, but it was mainly in a holster, it was a side arm, just in case. No one ever went to battle with only their own 1911.
1911 are great but modern handguns are overall more durable

The 4506 is one of my favorite pistols. It is accurate and very reliable. My wife was afraid to shoot .45, but the 4506 helped change that.

I own only two non-1911 in .45ACP. An MPA 10 and a S&W 645. One is a sledge hammer and the other a tack hammer.

+1 I wasn't sure about this gun when I bought it, but ~$400 with an extra .22 LR upper tempted me and I gave in. Absolutely reliable. It replaced a M28-2 in my nightstand. With the .22 upper it groups better than any .22 I own except my 17-3.

I've had a sig 220 , S&W 4506 and a couple of Para's ( along with a pile of 1911's.) All are now sold off with the exception of a pair of 1911's and my FS M&P 45. Love the M&P in this cal. Right sized for my hands, reliable as a hammer and very light for it's size. It gobbles up anything I feed it with minimized recoil too.
