Default 3906/3953 magazines

Are they the same. Are they interchangable? Reason I ask is that I see Midway offers a 9 round mag for the 3906 which I would love to have for my 3953. They list it as being for the 3906 but make no mention of it fitting the 3953.

The 3906/04 is a full size single stack 9mm, while if I remember it correctly, the 3953 is based on the compact frame 3913. While the longer 9 round mag will fit the 3953 because the mag release notch is at the same level, the magazine will stick way out from the bottom of the mag well. About 3/4 of an inch by my measurements. I measured by sticking a 9 round 3904 mag into the mag well of my 3913.

If I'm wrong about the frame of the 3953, then it will in fact fit.

If you need a picture of what I'm talking about let me know and I'll post one.

GaryS is right. The 3953 is a compact weapon. A 3904/3906 is a full size weapon.

Big Daddy,
I also have looked at the Midway 3906 mags. The web site states that they are "replacement" and lists them as $8. cheaper than Smith. Do you know if they are genuine factory mags?

I see two types. One is OEM from Smith and Wesson, the other is aftermarket from Pro Mag. I've never had good luck with Pro Mag products. I bought some years ago from Cheaper Than Dirt and the ones that would load 9mm rounds wouldn't cycle and the other ones wouldn't even allow me to load the rounds.

I have two Pro Mags that came with a 457 I bought a couple of years ago. Those won't fire double action because apparently the just enough out of spec to activate the mag safety. OEM magazines work fine though.

My personal opinion is that I wouldn't use a Pro Mag for anything other than range duty and only if I had nothing else.

I think Mec Gar is the OEM manufacturer for Smith&Wesson.
