S&W Model 39 and 39-2 Serial Numbers
I own a S&W 39-2 that my dad Purchased in the mid to late 80's while in the Coast Guard during the Carribean Drug Wars. It is all original and works beautifully, but I can't pinpoint the date. The Serial Number is A4441** I was wondering if anyone could help me pinpoint the date of manufacture for this particular pistol.
Here is a picture:

It probably shipped around 1978 or 1979. The 39-2 is a great pistol that belonged to your dad. That makes it and extra special gun.

Beautiful example - and extra special because it was your dad's.
My 39-2 is one of my faves, love the way it feels in the hand and it makes me look like a better shooter than I am

There is at least one old thread on here about those SS model 39 frames. Need some quality time with the forum search feature.
Found it! Help identify a S&W frame forging
Since apparently only a couple of hundred of these made it into the wild, you have an interesting pistol! I think everyone here would love to see more pictures of this - I know I would!

"The serial number is A533xxx."
Serial numbers ran from A475001 in 1978 to A565000 in 1979.

How about this for a new old gem?
I bought it new in 1979 while in college. It might have had 500 rounds put through it at most ... all in the first few weeks after I got it. I soon after got addicted to a larger caliber .357 Colt Python and a S&W .44 mag nickel 8 3/8" Dirty Harry. This 39-2 was relegated to the safe for the past 30+ years. It might be the newest old 39-2 around. Just took it to the range fir the first time since back then and it still feels new and tight!

Gunslinger, I assembled a half dozen or more of the BII frames using S&W parts since I had the police armory as one of my responsibilities. BII was a S Calif firm that produced a small number of 39 frames and even smaller number of 59 frames but abandoned the project very quickly. The pistols I assembled were good shooters but I traded mine (39 and 59) off at some point...both serials were below 50.

Saw an ad on another forum, 39-2 selling for $500. No takers.
Then he lowers it to $450. No takers.
Finally he took the ad down.
From the pix he posted it looked great, I'm surprised nobody bought it. Money's tight I guess.

Hello forum, I have a opportunity to purchase a 39-2 black.
The serial is A124xxx
I am trying to educate myself what the numbers correlate to in the serial and a honest value.
Thank you.

Just purchased 39-2
Hi all
New to the forum and new to serious shooting and recently earn hunting license. I just purchased a Model 39 (Understand it is 39-2) and see some of you have ability to date these. Have not even received the gun since California 10 wait. The serial on my paperwork states 61524. No prefix or letters. Was gun of families deceased father and gunsmith at shop says looks as if maybe only fired few times or just the factory firing. Could someone let me know approx. year on this. Very excited to shoot after reading all the positive things said on here.
Thanks
New to forums also

Since we are asking and answering questions, here is a question I am looking for an answer to:
I have seen nickel Model 39-2 pistols that have a nickel takedown lever and decocker, and I have seen nickel pistols where those parts are blued. Was there a pattern to this, was a special order item, was it a manufacturing change? Is there a date/serial number where that transition took place?
Thanks.

I am NO AUTHORITY on this, but it has been my experience that if the small parts are black/blued as noted, it was shipped from S&W as a nickel plated gun. If the small parts are also nickeled -- the gun is likely:
--aftermarket nickel plated
--aftermarket re-nickel plated
--someone thought it was a good idea to rub Mother's Mag polish on the parts for 4 hrs until they shine
If you like the look, all is well. Originaly & collectibility takes a very serious hit however.

I have a S&W Model 39 which I've acquired from a friend. The story line is that his dad worked in the Treasury Dept. and this was his issued side arm. It is not government marked and is a true 39 and not a 39-2. As I understand it, the serial number, 376XX, places it produced pre-1970. What I would really like to know is exactly what year year it was actually manufactured. Does anyone have an idea as to what year this may be? Many thanks,
James

Smith and Wesson 39- 2 serial number A129***
I got this gun several years ago from my brother. He told me under one of the handles was etched with a hand held etched LVMPD. I have had this gun for at least 30 years. Have shot it probably 500 rounds in those years. I can still punch the x out of a silhouette. Would love to know when it was manufactured. I know the 39- 2 was started in 1955. Someone help. With mine in the 129.000 run I am thinking 1960 area. Thanks

Does anybody have any estimate on a manufacturing date for a Model 39 (no dash) in the 88k serial range? No prefix.

I picked up a very nice Model 39 no dash a while ago and would be curious as to when it was manufactured. Aluminum frame...no box or papers, just a nice gun. Serial 1059XX............TIA

A301509 should have shipped in 1976. The last 39-2 shipped in 1983. Great guns, lots of them out there.

Looking for Info on 39-2 S/N 157XXX
I have a 39-2 a customer wanted me to list on GB but after examining it I found the decocker is not functioning. After searching on this forum it appears to need a new sear release lever that has to be fitted for proper operation. If my research is correct this is a 1st generation handgun. Wondering about production year for it as well. It is a good solid feeling weapon but need to repair decocker before listing it for sale. Any info would be appreciated.

Early to mid-1972 for 157xxx. Definitely a 1st Gen pistol, 39-2 ran from 1970 to around 1982 or possibly a bit later. There was some overlap at the end of the 1st Gens and the start of the 2nd Gens.

Unlikely, it’s copyrighted. Most of is here get our estimates from the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition by Supica & Nahas.
