Default P22 misfire and case rupture

Was at the range and had a Case end blowout on my P22. Slide was partially open and the spring in the picture was sticking out under the slide. I am thinking the spring let go and kept the slide from closing so the case head was unsupported. Any thoughts why the spring let go and what does that one do? BTW now I know why I have always been told to wear safety glasses.
