Default 659 Bent Extractor Pin

Hello,

I have a S&W 659 9mm pistol, I replaced the extractor last year on this pistol and re-installed the extractor pin to far. The pin would get caught on the inside of the frame and prevent the slide from being moved back or released forward, initially I used a rubber mallet and hit the back of the slide several times to see if it would release the slide (this was before I knew the pin wasn't inserted correctly)...well the slide didn't budge.

I took the grips off and used a long punch and hammer to push the pin back up and out of the slide, The extractor pin was visually bent (approx 15-20 degree bend) and nicked up badly, also the lower frame had a small nick from the pin being hit into it (image the pin coming out the bottom of the slide, every time I hit the slide I drove the pin forward into the frame).

I ordered a new pin from Midway but it needs 60+ days as a special order part (no big deal)..

Here's the thing, I'm now terrified to shoot this pistol! I was wondering that since the extractor pin managed to get badly bent if that could have damaged the slide and possibly cause the pistol to blow up? I know this sounds crazy, but the hole the extractor pin fits in (or even the lower frame of the 659) could have been weekend or damaged enough to cause a catastrophic malfunction?

Yes, I know I shouldn't have hit it with a rubber mallet..but at the time it seemed like my only chance to get that slide released. I'm hoping this pistol is still safe to shoot.

Is it safe to shoot? Should I swap the slide for another slide? or this thing toast/scrap metal now?

Regards

Mike

Any nicks or gouges in the frame or slide are no big deal, the only thing to worry about are cracks, and I seriously doubt you cracked anything....on another note, the extractor pin should always be driven out from the TOP of the slide, and installed from the BOTTOM, with the slide removed from the gun of course....it would take alot more than what you did to hurt an all stainless Smith.......also make sure to debur any areas on the frame or slide rails......forgot to mention, you can get the pin from Smith & Wesson, I just bought a couple spares and springs from them, they had them in stock.......if you would like to pm me with your address I will send you one, just remember to pay it forward....

Thanks for the reply! So I guess I didn't crack or damage anything.

Can you PM me the address to order the pin from? That would be greatly appreciated, Also thanks for the advise on properly installing the pin!

Mike

I would think that if you initially drove the pin out the top of the slide that the hole for the extractor pin is permanently damaged and out of tolerance. You may have destroyed the slide.

You might want to read this thread : 3rd Gen Extractor pin

That's interesting! Never thought of that, When I replace the pin I'll test fir a few hundred rounds and see if all is well. If it extracts/ejects properly and the pin doesn't fall out I guess it's OK?

A gunsmith in my area had told me slides for these guns (used) cost $250-$350 (OUCH!). That was in late 2011.
