Hi everyone, I just bought a 52-2, something I've always wanted, and I was trying to figure out when it was made. According to Supica & Nahas, 52-2s started in 1970 with ser. no. A115001, but mine is serial number A1062XX and is clearly marked "52-2" Can anyone help me out with this?
The A1062XX would indicate a duplicate number. If it was an A115XXX would have been an A115XXXA (or B or C). Probably 1968-9 but Jinks for the "Ship Date"
I was thinking the same thing about the duplicate SN but what's throwing me is the 52-2 stamp. The dash 2 came out in 1971. Could it be a leftover 52-1 frame that had a SN but was not model marked until after the 52-2 went into production at which point it was used? Might be fun to letter it.
Thanks for the responses guys. The serial number is all numerals except for the "A" prefix. It's a little bit of a mystery, I might just go ahead and get a letter for it, just to satisfy my curiosity.
Seems like there might be a mistake about A115XXX being the earliest 52-2. I have a 52-2 that is A104XXX. It doesn't look transitional. It has all the 52-2 features. I have seen two on GB in the A106XXX range in the last couple of weeks. Hunter, did you buy one of those on GB?
The slide on mine and I believe both the ones on GB have a lazy & in the roll mark on the left side. I haven't seen that on any 52-1's. (I do see it on mdl 41's of the same period). Gotta love the variations of S&W.
By the way, what is the exact proceedure for getting a letter from Jinks? Phone call? E-mail? Costs around $50, right?
