Not on mine.

Shoot the 4040 & enjoy it. Holster wear is unavoidable for a gun actually carried and used.

Wipe down the carbon steel slide now and again to prevent rust (like we used to do with every other blued revolver & pistol ).

As a S&W trained armorer, I refrain from removing the extractor, its pin & spring for any reason other than necessary repair.

FWIW, I'm not especially keen on using any coating that can add thickness in the extractor recess.

Suit yourself, though. It's your 4040.

Now, if S&W were going to have their vendor do either a Melonite QP or a PVD treatment, and their smiths do the removal & re-instrallation of the extractor, along with gauging and checking tolerances after the treatment, I'd not be adverse to having that done.

I'm not all that enthused about cosmetic appearance anymore, though, so I'll just keep carrying, using & shooting my own 4040, and accumulating more wear.

There is nothing wrong with wear on a used gun. As long as it isn't rusting excessively I wouldn't worry about it. The 4040 is a great pistol that deserves attention and use, but its ok to show its wear and tear.

Enjoy your new 4040.
